Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, work on cool-water carbonates has expanded to become a mainstream research area. Studies on modern and Quaternary deposits will continue to be important; however, there is increasing momentum towards unravelling sediment processes, biota-sediment interactions and diagenetic products in Cenozoic and older cool-water carbonates. Many contributions in this book document Cenozoic and Quaternary carbonates from landlocked (microtidal) water-bodies. These carbonates display important differences in biota and fabric distributions when compared with world ocean examples. Consequently, the scientific community is now better placed to reinterpret pre-Tertiary carbonates where there is a suspicion that they have developed under microtidal conditions. Some papers in the book provide new approaches to interpreting environmental change within macrotidal regimes and others lay firm foundations for future cool-water carbonate diagenetic research. The aim of the book is to illustrate recent international contributions to cool-water carbonates research, with an emphasis on Neogene and Recent case studies. Contributions are divided into three sections: microtidal carbonates from the Mediterranean realm; macrotidal examples from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico; and early diagenetic fabrics.

Book excerpt: This special publication Perspectives in Carbonate Geologyis a collection of papers most of which were presented at asymposium to honor the 80th birthday of Bob Ginsburg at the meetingof Geological Society of America in Salt Lake City in 2005. Themajority of the papers in this publication are connected with thestudy of modern carbonate sediments. Bob Ginsburg pioneered theconcept of comparative sedimentology - that is using the modern tocompare to and relate to and understand the ancient. These studiesare concerned with Bob's areas of passion: coral reefs andsea-level; submarine cementation and formation of beach rock;surface sediments on Great Bahama Bank and other platforms; originof ooids; coastal sediments; formation of stromatolites; impact ofstorms on sediments; and the formation of dolomite. The remainderof the papers apply the study of modern environments andsedimentary processes to ancient sediments. Book excerpt: The Michigan Basin is a classic intracratonic basin that has played a significant role in the fundamental understanding of geological processes in such basins, and has been an important resource for oil and gas, economic minerals, groundwater, and coal. Despite the classic nature of the Michigan Basin, there has not been a "special volume" dedicated to the basin in nearly 25 years. Since that time, new advancements in the geological sciences, particularly the utilization of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and three-dimensional geostatistical modeling, have led to a new and more comprehensive understanding of the Paleozoic sedimentary packages of the Michigan Basin. This volume provides significant new insights of the Michigan Basin to both academic and applied geoscientists; it includes papers that discuss various aspects of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of key units within the basin, as well as papers that analyze the diverse distribution of natural resources present in this basin.

Book excerpt: The bromide "nothing is constant but change" could have been coined to describe the geological history of the Permo-Carboniferous - the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian Periods. Global tectonics, fluctuations in atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, changes in global climate, and evolutionary changes in survivors of mass extinctions created the backdrop for the shifting panorama of the remarkable time in earth history. Catastrophic extinctions during the Frasnian-Famennian crisis decimated the global plant and animal populations, leaving survivors to initally struggle through the Devonian-Carboniferous transition. The ensuing evolutionary diversification into less-populated niches was brought to an abrupt end at the close of the Permian Period by the largest of all mass extinctions. Upheavals in plate motion change the configuration of continents and oceans during this time. Within the evolving Permo-Carboniferous "landscape," a wide diversity of carbonate platforms and reefs flourished. They ranged in size from small mounds to mega-platforms, some of which are important mineral and petroleum reservoirs. It is the diversity which Permo-Carboniferous rocks offer that has led to their intensive study by researchers from industry and academia around the globe. This book stems mostly from presentations given at the SEPM- and IAS-sponsored research conference Permo-Carboniferous Carbonate Platforms and Reefs, held May 12-19, 2000 in El Paso, Texas.

Book excerpt: "Inspired by a GSA Penrose Conference held in 2005 (cosponsored by the International Association of Sedimentologists and the British Sedimentological Research Group), the 17 papers in this volume explore sedimentary environments in arc collision zones and their utility in recording the evolution of modern and ancient convergent margins. The first set of papers in the collection focuses on formation and evolution of the sedimentary record in arc settings and arc collision zones, concentrating on modern intra-oceanic examples. Papers include studies of flexural modeling and factors that affect development of siliciclastic and carbonate deposits around modern arcs. The second half of the volume presents new applications of arc sedimentary records. These relate primarily to constraining tectonic events in the evolution of arc systems, but also concern the links among tectonic uplift, collision, and geomorphic and climatic feedback mechanisms in arc collision zones."--Publisher's website.
