Book excerpt: The bromide "nothing is constant but change" could have been coined to describe the geological history of the Permo-Carboniferous - the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian Periods. Global tectonics, fluctuations in atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, changes in global climate, and evolutionary changes in survivors of mass extinctions created the backdrop for the shifting panorama of the remarkable time in earth history. Catastrophic extinctions during the Frasnian-Famennian crisis decimated the global plant and animal populations, leaving survivors to initally struggle through the Devonian-Carboniferous transition. The ensuing evolutionary diversification into less-populated niches was brought to an abrupt end at the close of the Permian Period by the largest of all mass extinctions. Upheavals in plate motion change the configuration of continents and oceans during this time. Within the evolving Permo-Carboniferous "landscape," a wide diversity of carbonate platforms and reefs flourished. They ranged in size from small mounds to mega-platforms, some of which are important mineral and petroleum reservoirs. It is the diversity which Permo-Carboniferous rocks offer that has led to their intensive study by researchers from industry and academia around the globe. This book stems mostly from presentations given at the SEPM- and IAS-sponsored research conference Permo-Carboniferous Carbonate Platforms and Reefs, held May 12-19, 2000 in El Paso, Texas.

This guide begins in the Dry Canyon area of the Sacramento Mts. devoted to platform evolution during Missourian and Virgilian times, focusing on mounds and cycles of the Holder Fm. Also covered is the Mississippian Lake Valley Formation's sedimentology and depositional environments in Indian Wells Canyon and Alamo Canyon again with focus on mound biota and comparative sedimentology of mound versus level-bottom biota. Muleshoe Mound in the southern part of the Sacramento Mts. is used to examine mound growth history and an example of differential compaction and modern day appearance of outcrops. This volume includes background geology on all of the areas that are visited as well as detailed discussions about each of the field trip stops.

Book excerpt: The geological evolution of Central Asia commenced with the formation of a complex Precambrian–Palaeozoic orogen. Cimmerian blocks were then accreted to the southern margin in the Mesozoic, leading to tectonic reactivation of older structures and discrete episodes of basin formation. The Indian and Arabian blocks collided with Asia in the Cenozoic, leading to renewed structural reactivation, intracontinental deformation and basin development. This complex evolution resulted in the present-day setting of an elongated Tien Shan range flanked by large Mesozoic–Cenozoic sedimentary basins with smaller intramontane basins distributed within the range. This volume presents multidisciplinary results and reviews from research groups in Europe and Central Asia that focus on the western part of the Tien Shan and some of the adjacent large sedimentary basins. These works elucidate the Late Palaeozoic–Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary evolution of the area. Emphasis is given to the collision of terranes and continents and the ensuing fault reactivations. The impact of climatic changes on sedimentation is also examined.
