If you’ve ever had a medical check-up, did you wonder why they put a cuff around your forearm, gave it a squeeze, and made you sit still and quiet? Or why they asked you to open your mouth so they could stick a thermometer under your tongue? Or put that cold stethoscope against your chest while you took deep breaths followed by sticking a clothespin thingamabob on your finger? What’s up with all the gizmos and gadgets and why all the bother?
What’s up is that all of these instruments measure the conditions of some of the most important, life-supporting functions, or vital signs, which keep your carcass from becoming, well, a carcass. The squeezy cuff is reading your blood pressure, which indicates how strongly your blood is pumping through your pipes. The thermometer measures your core body temperature, which affects many chemical reactions in your body that supply energy for your cells. With a stethoscope, the swooshing sound of air moving in and out of your lungs can be listened to. And the clothespin doohickey tracks the amount of oxygen being carried by your blood. Vital signs are critical indicators of your body’s overall health. By tracking them as you grow and mature, these measurements can be used as a guide or reference point for when your body isn’t feeling all that great.
Now what does your blood pressure have to do with US National Parks? While human vital signs are important in evaluating your body’s health, ecological vital signs are indicators for measuring ecosystem health. An ecosystem is a community of living organisms like frogs, trees, or bacteria, and nonliving materials such as water, dirt, and rocks that are located together and interact on some level. In a healthy ecosystem, all of the living and nonliving members exist in a state of natural balance in harmony with their environment. When something new enters the community, say a strange weed or insect, or something in the environment shifts, such as the air temperature becoming warmer, the health of the ecosystem can be threatened. Monitoring ecological vital signs gives scientists a reference point or baseline of the natural condition and alerts them when there is a change. While a healthy ecosystem can continue to support all its members and adapt to change, sometimes changes are too great and members of the ecosystem become stressed and have a hard time keeping up.
Although US National Parks are some of the most protected areas on the planet, the ecological health of many of these carefully safeguarded lands is increasingly uncertain due to our rapidly changing global environment. Here we present a collection of articles about how we study and understand the health of park ecosystems by measuring and tracking the condition of ecological vital signs. This scientific data helps park managers protect the valued resources of our parks and lessen harmful impacts when change is inevitable.

Book excerpt: Population declines caused by natural and anthropogenic factors can quickly erode genetic diversity in natural populations. In this study, we examined genetic variation within 10 tiger salamander populations across northern Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana, USA using eight microsatellite loci. We tested for the genetic signature of population decline using heterozygosity excess, shifts in allele frequencies, and low ratios of allelic number to allelic size range (M-ratios). We found different results among the three tests. All 10 populations had low M-ratios, ?ve had shifts in allele frequencies and only two had signi?cant heterozygosity excesses. These results support theoretical expectations of different temporal signatures among bottleneck tests and suggest that both historical ?sh stocking, recent, sustained drought, and possibly an emerging amphibian disease have contributed to declines in effective population size.

Book excerpt: Recent data indicates that blotched tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum melanostictum) in northern regions of Yellowstone National Park are declining due to climate-related habitat changes. In this study, we used ancient and modern mitochondrial haplotype diversity to model the effective size of this amphibian population through recent geological time and to assess past responses to climatic changes in the region. Using subfossils collected from a cave in northern Yellowstone, we analyzed .700 base pairs of mitochondrial sequence from 16 samples ranging in age from 100 to 3300 years old and found that all shared an identical haplotype. Although mitochondrial diversity was extremely low within the living population, we still were able to detect geographic subdivision within the local area. Using serial coalescent modelling with Bayesian priors from both modern and ancient genetic data we simulated a range of probable population sizes and mutation rates through time. Our simulations suggest that regional mitochondrial diversity has remained relatively constant even through climatic fluctuations of recent millennia.

Book excerpt: Given the recent apparent world-wide decline in amphibians, the current status of amphibian populations in the Western United States warrants serious attention. The tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum, is of particular concern since it is Colorado's only salamander species. A. tigrinum is most conspicuous in its larval stage in small bodies of water. The location of larval tiger salamander habitat in South Central Colorado (Alimosa, Chaffee, Custer, Fremont, and Gunnison Counties) was mapped, to better understand its geographic range. Analysis of sampling methods was also carried out, yielding improvements in the standard drop box method, as well as a new observational method for determining larval salamander density in small bodies of water. The new observational method is a replicable, easy, and inexpensive way to estimate larval tiger salamander density and determine population trends. Observations should occur at midday since larval tiger salamanders follow a daily cycle of activity that shows maximum activity around this hour. In the current study, the observational method proved to be comparable or superior to the drop box method in predicting larval densities (as determined by seining). The observational method is ideal for a long term monitoring program, and could yield information that is critical to conservation efforts.

Book excerpt: The western tiger salamander (Ambystoma mavortium Baird) is a 'species of special concern' in the Canadian prairie provinces. Potential declines caused by habitat loss and fragmentation, emergent diseases, and fish stocking are reasons cited for this species conservation status. However, little data exist about the ecology, distribution, and abundance of this species in Canada, where the species reaches the northern extent of its global range. In the Beaver Hills of Alberta, I examined occupancy, abundance, and summer habitat of the western tiger salamander. In 2013, I surveyed potential breeding ponds for salamander occurrence and abundance and characterized the distribution of populations in relation to terrestrial habitat variables with generalized linear regression. In 2014, I conducted season-long capture-mark-recapture (CMR) studies at three study sites to characterize seasonal activity patterns of adults and larvae and population sizes. I then compared CMR density estimates among sites to relative counts observed during my low-intensity survey method to determine if counts from low-intensity surveys suitably characterized salamander population densities among sites. In 2013 and 2014, I tested the effect of baited funnel traps on adult and larval capture success, as ambystomatid salamanders are difficult to detect. The distribution of salamander populations was significantly related to northern pocket gopher density (Thomomys talpoides Richardson) adjacent to wetlands, but not land cover composition. Density when present was not significantly related to any terrestrial habitat features. Counts (from low-intensity surveys) accurately characterized population density, although density estimates were very imprecise. Seasonal pond-use patterns indicate that post-metamorphic individuals remain in wetlands to forage after breeding, which is atypical among ambystomatid salamanders. Lastly, baiting funnel traps did not affect capture success of post-metamorphic individuals, but light-baited traps captured significantly more larval individuals than non-baited traps. The key findings of this study are that salamander populations likely depend on small mammal burrows to overwinter and that wetlands are important summer habitat for post-metamorphic individuals. Further, baited minnow traps differentially affect distinct life stages of western tiger salamanders, and likely other ambystomatid salamanders.
