This book was released on 1997 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the research reported in this report were: to determine migration patterns of black brant in Boundary Bay, British Columbia; to determine the level of philopatry (the tendency to exhibit long-term fidelity in the use of a particular area) of the species during the winter in the bay and in the spring in the bay and the Parksville-Qualicum area; and to study the impact of management decisions on the past and present population dynamics of black brant wintering and spring staging in the bay. Winter philopatry of black brant is estimated and compared to the levels exhibited by other goose species. Estimates of philopatry are also provided for birds seen in more than one spring, and reasons for differences in philopatry between Boundary Bay and Parksville-Qualicum are proposed. The genetic hypothesis for the evolution of philopatry is also discussed.

Book Synopsis The North American Geese by : Paul Johnsgard
Download or read book The North American Geese written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight currently recognized species of North American geese are part of a familiar group of birds collectively called waterfowl, all of which are smaller than swans and generally larger than ducks. They include the most popular of our aquatic gamebirds, with several million shot each year by sport hunters. Our two most abundant waterfowl, the Canada goose and snow goose, have populations collectively totaling about 15 million individuals. Like swans, the lifelong pairbonding of geese, their familial care, and prolonged social attachment to their offspring are legendary. Their seasonal migratory flights sometimes span thousands of miles, and the sight of their long, wavering flight formations are as much the symbols of seasonal change as are the spring songs of cardinals or the appearance of autumnal leaf colors. This book describes each species' geographic range and subspecies, its identification traits, weights and measurements, and criteria for its age and sex determination. Ecological and behavioral information includes each species' breeding and wintering habitats, its foods and foraging behavior, its local and long distance movements, and its relationships with other species. Reproductive information includes each species' age of maturity, pair-bond pattern, pair-forming behaviors, usual clutch sizes and incubation periods, brooding behavior, and postbreeding behavior. Mortality sources and rates of egg, young, and adult losses are also summarized, and each species' past and current North American populations are estimated. In addition to a text of nearly 60,000 words, the book includes 8 maps, 21 line drawings, and 28 photographs by the author, as well as more than 700 literature citations.

Book Synopsis The Barnacle Goose by : Jeffrey M. Black
Download or read book The Barnacle Goose written by Jeffrey M. Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barnacle Goose, a distinctive, handsome black-and-white bird, gets its name from a mediaeval myth that the birds hatched from barnacles – how else to explain their sudden appearance each autumn in northern Britain? We now know, of course, that the birds migrate from Arctic Russia, Norway and Svalbard to winter throughout northern Europe. This book represents a culmination of more than 25 years of Barnacle Goose research. It represents the story of one of Europe's most celebrated long-term behavioral studies, detailing the lives of these social and sociable birds. Chapters include sections on pair formation and bonding, family and population dynamics, brood parasitism, food and feeding, size and shape in different populations, life cycle, survivorship, dispersal, migration, and conservation, with particular regard to climate change. It is a rigorous and thorough examination of the lives of these birds, in fine Poyser tradition.
Book Synopsis Trends and Traditions by : W. David Shuford
Download or read book Trends and Traditions written by W. David Shuford and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of the rich avifauna of western North America is ever changing in response to human influences, geomorphic processes, and natural climatic variation. Documenting and synthesizing the patterns, rate, and causes of these changes is crucial for the conservation of birds in this region, particularly in a time of rapid climate change, expanding human population, and accelerated resource extraction. To that end, a symposium on avifaunal change was held at Western Field Ornithologists' annual conference in San Diego, California, in October 2014, which formed the basis for the current volume. The papers herein emphasize the overarching themes of the effects of extensive habitat loss and degradation on the avifauna of the West in the 19th and 20th centuries and the responses of birds to environmental change and variation. Several papers portray rays of hope, documenting reversals of trends in the loss of some important habitats, the recovery of some avian populations in response to management, and resiliency in other species as they adapt to novel habitats. Others express increasing concern for the potential future effects of a rapidly changing climate. Most emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring of the population trends, distribution, and ecological attributes of the region's birdlife. The geographical representation and bird species or groups covered varies widely. Collectively these papers should aid in the long-term conservation of the region's birdlife.--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses occur in coastal zones throughout the world, in the part of the marine habitat that is most heavily influenced by humans. Decisions about coastal management therefore often involve seagrasses, but a full appreciation of the role of seagrasses in coastal ecosystems has yet to be reached. This book provides an entry point for those wishing to learn about the ecology of this fascinating group of plants, and gives a broad overview of current knowledge, complemented by extensive literature references to guide the reader to more detailed studies.

Book Synopsis Effects of the Nestucca Oil Spill on Seabirds Along the Coast of Vancouver Island in 1989 by : Alan E. Burger
Download or read book Effects of the Nestucca Oil Spill on Seabirds Along the Coast of Vancouver Island in 1989 written by Alan E. Burger and published by Delta, B.C. : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 1993 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 23 December 1988, the oil barge Nestucca was damaged off Gray's Harbour, Washington and began leaking, spilling about 875,000 litres of Bunker C oil that drifted northwards, leading to widespread oiling of beaches along the coasts of Washington and Vancouver Island and the heavy mortality of seabirds. This report documents the impact of the Nestucca spill on seabirds based on the data collected from British Columbia. The report documented the numbers, types, degree of oiling, and state of decomposition of the birds recovered on Vancouver Island; compared the species composition of the oiled birds with that of offshore and inshore populations wintering off southwest Vancouver Island; estimated the total number of oiled birds to land on Vancouver Island, taking into account the large numbers of carcasses not tallied; estimated the total at-sea mortality represented by the birds recovered on Vancouver Island, taking into account the losses of carcasses at sea; compared the Nestucca victims with normal seabird mortality off Vancouver Island; and assessed the impact of the spill on predatory and scavenging birds on Vancouver Island.
