Book excerpt: "The texts were written by a single person (complemented by a report from a user), the photographs, reproduced in duotone, all come from the same lens using an approach repeated again and again. Both attempt to show the objective state of affairs of Mies van der Rohe's solitary buildings with carefully collected and organized materials. An inner confrontation over decades opened up access to Mies' oeuvre for Werner Blaser, and thus, to this publication." "The legacy of Mies van der Rohe's most fruitful intentions is thus visually assessed with in part unpublished picture material. Those with a more critical attitude should also be creatively confronted with the roots of good architecture through the intensity of the presentation, which will hopefully provide new stimulus."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is not only one of the most important architects of the twentieth century, his furniture designs are also considered milestones in the history of design. Even today, his tubular and flat-bar steel furniture, such as the famous Barcelona Chan, are to a large extent still in serial production. Based on the most recent scholarship and taking new material into consideration, this publication devotes itself to these modern classics and in doing so, discusses the progressive concepts of interior space developed by Mies van der Rohe, who invariably understood the interior-design aspect as part of an overall architectural plan. Well-informed experts not only look back on the artistic highlights of Mies's career and their developmental history, their contributions also bring to life the atmosphere that prevailed in Berlin in the twenties and thirties. In addition, this book contains a series of previously unpublished photographs of Mies's work."--Contraportada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is, without doubt, one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. The modern city, with its towers of glass and steel, can be at least in part attributed to his influence. Equally significant, if smaller in scale, is Mies’ daring design of furniture, pieces that exhibit an unerring sense of proportion, as well as minimalist forms and exquisitely refined details. After an apprenticeship with furniture designer Bruno Paul in Berlin, he joined the office of architect Peter Behrens where he met Le Corbusier and Walther Gropius. In the mid-1920s, he began to design furniture, pieces that he conceived and created for particular interiors. Mies van der Rohe’s furniture is known for fine craftsmanship, a mix of traditional luxurious fabrics (like leather) combined with modern chrome frames, and a distinct separation of the supporting structure and the supported surfaces. His modern furniture pieces using new industrial technologies, like the Barcelona chair and table (1929), and the Brno chair (1930), have become acclaimed icons of twentieth-century design.

The consensus among architectural historians is that Schulze s book is the bestand most authoritativeone ever written (not to mention the only biography) about Mies, who introduced the International Style to America and established Chicago and IIT as a hub of mid-century modern design."

This is one” (Blueprint) Architects have been responsible for many of the modern furniture classics of the 20th century - Mies's Barcelona Chair, Eileen Gray's side table and Le Corbusier's chaise longue. Furniture and Architecture takes a unique look at the relationship between architects and furniture design. In additional it includes exclusive interviews with high-profile architects as well as with key figures in furniture manufacture and retail. A directory of specialist retailers, who sell architect-designed furniture, makes this an invaluable resource for architects and the interested public. Book excerpt: Florence Knoll (1917–2019) was a leading force of modern design. She worked from 1945 to 1965 at Knoll Associates, first as business partner with her husband Hans Knoll, later as president after his death, and, finally, as design director. Her commissions became hallmarks of the modern era, including the Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe, the Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia, and the Platner Collection by Warren Platner. She created classics like the Parallel Bar Collection, still in production today. Knoll invented the visual language of the modern office through her groundbreaking interiors and the creation of the acclaimed "Knoll look," which remains a standard for interior design today. She reinvigorated the International Style through humanizing textiles, lighting, and accessories. Although Knoll's motto was "no compromise, ever," as a woman in a white, upper-middle-class, male-dominated environment, she often had to make accommodations to gain respect from her colleagues, clients, and collaborators. No Compromise looks at Knoll's extraordinary career in close-up, from her student days to her professional accomplishments.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a real revival and appraisal of the works of the mid-century modern movement among architects and interior designers: the furniture, lighting and objects designed by Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames, Eileen Gray, Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Pierre Jeanneret, Finn Juhl, Vladimir Kagan, Poul Kjaerholm, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Børge Mogensen, Serge Mouille, George Nakashima, George Nelson, Verner Panton, Ico Parisi, Charlotte Perriand, Gio Ponti, Jean Prouvé, Sergio Rodrigues, Jean Royère, Eero Saarinen, Arne Vodder, Jules Wabbes, Ole Wanscher, Hans J. Wegner, Jorge Zalszupin and many others is integrated in their most exclusive projects and their best pieces are sold at record prices at Christies, Philipps, Sotheby's... In the U.S., the mid-century modern movement in interiors, product and graphic design and architecture was a reflection of the International and Bauhaus movements including the works of Gropius, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Brazilian and Scandinavian architects were very influential, with a style characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature. In Europe, the influence of Le Corbusier and the CIAM resulted in an architectural orthodoxy manifest across most parts of post-war Europe that was ultimately challenged by the radical agendas of the architectural wings of the avant-garde. A critical but sympathetic reappraisal of the internationalist oeuvre, inspired by the Scandinavian Moderns and the late work of Le Corbusier himself, was reinterpreted by groups such as Team X, including structuralist architects and the movement known as New Brutalism. This chic, over-sized coffee table book is an essential object for all mid-century design aficionados, interior designers with a passion for the modernist 1950s and for refined readers seeking inspiration for their own interiors. In 20 reports, interior designers and passionate collectors of mid-century furniture, lighting, objects and artworks show how carefully selected touches of high-end mid-century modernism can contribute to a unique living environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive reference on designing commercial interiors-expanded and updated for today's facilities Following the success of the ASID/Polsky Prize Honorable Mention in 1999, authors Christine Piotrowski and Elizabeth Rogers have extensively revised this guide to planning and designing commercial interiors to help professionals and design students successfully address today's trends and project requirements. This comprehensive reference covers the practical and aesthetic issues that distinguish commercial interiors. There is new information on sustainable design, security, and accessibility-three areas of increased emphasis in modern interiors. An introductory chapter provides an overview of commercial interior design and the challenges and rewards of working in the field, and stresses the importance of understanding the basic purpose and functions of the client's business as a prerequisite to designing interiors. This guide also gives the reader a head start with eight self-contained chapters that provide comprehensive coverage of interior design for specific types of commercial facilities, ranging from offices to food and beverage facilities, and from retail stores to health care facilities. Each chapter is complete with a historical overview, types of facilities, planning and interior design elements, design applications, a summary, references, and Web sites. New design applications covered include spas in hotels, bed and breakfast inns, coffee shops, gift stores and salons, courthouses and courtrooms, and golf clubhouses. In keeping with the times, there are new chapters focusing on senior living facilities and on restoration and adaptive use. A chapter on project management has been revised and includes everything from proposals and contracts to scheduling and documentation. Throughout the book, design application discussions, illustrations, and photographs help both professionals and students solve problems and envision and implement distinctive designs for commercial interiors. With information on licensing, codes, and regulations, along with more than 150 photographs and illustrations, this combined resource and instant reference is a must-have for commercial interior design professionals, students, and those studying for the NCIDQ licensing exam.
