Rodney Wilson examines the economic prospects for the region considering: *the consequences of rapid population growth, including the implications for education and employment; *low savings levels; *the absence of significant inflows of private capital and foreign investment; *fragmentation of the banking system; *the basic ecomomic infrastructure and the problems caused by excessive military expenditure; *falling oil prices; *budget deficits; The author examines alternative economic directions for the region arguing that both the methods and goals of development have to be reassessed in a region where Islam prevails.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Modern Middle East offers a comprehensive assessment of the region, stretching from the fourteenth century and the founding of the Ottoman and Safavid empires through to the present-day protests and upheavals. The textbook focuses on Turkey, Iran, and the Arab countries of the Middle East, as well as areas often left out of Middle East history—such as the Balkans and the changing roles that Western forces have played in the region for centuries—to discuss the larger contexts and influences on the region's cultural and political development. Enriched by the perspectives of workers and professionals; urban merchants and provincial notables; slaves, students, women, and peasants, as well as political leaders, the book maps the complex social interrelationships and provides a pivotal understanding of the shifting shapes of governance and trajectories of social change in the Middle East. Extensively illustrated with drawings, photographs, and maps, this text skillfully integrates a diverse range of actors and influences to construct a narrative that is at once sophisticated and lucid. A History of the Modern Middle East highlights the region's complexity and variation, countering easy assumptions about the Middle East, those who governed, and those they governed—the rulers, rebels, and rogues who shaped a region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between trafficking and free trade? Is trafficking the perfection or the perversion of free trade? Trafficking occurs thousands of times each day at borders throughout the world, yet we have come to perceive it as something quite extraordinary. How did this happen, and what role does trafficking play in capitalism? To answer these questions, Johan Mathew traces the hidden networks that operated across the Arabian Sea in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Following the entangled history of trafficking and capitalism, he explores how the Arabian Sea reveals the gaps that haunt political borders and undermine economic models. Ultimately, he shows how capitalism was forged at the margins of the free market, where governments intervened, and traffickers turned a profit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire Gulf is passing through a transitional phase. The member-states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are witnessing change in varying degrees. The change has become too evident from the 1960s. It was oil, more than any other factor, which was responsible for a rapid transition. Control over oil production and marketing have led to the strengthening of governmental role as owner and distributor of oil income. The regions tribal society is being transformed into a modern society. Political modernization is a recent phenomenon if the nature and extent of structural and informal transformations are taken into account. Three broadly defined phases of political change can be discerned in the Arabian Peninsula: the traditional, the neo-traditional, and the modernizing or post-traditional. The modernizing phase was initiated by radical policies of socio-economic development, including the necessary restructuring of replacement of regimes and a redefinition or expansion of the scope and role of the state. However, the pace and direction of change is not clear enough. The coming few decades are crucial in this regard.

Book excerpt: This collection of articles attempts to assess Jordan's position in the region in the light of its long quest for legitimacy, both as a state and as a Hashemite monarchy. The editors of the volume feel that developments since 1967 and particularly during the last decade have weakened the tendencies previously prevailing among various elements in the Arab world to question Jordan's legitimacy. Moreover, it is suggested that Jordan's position in the inter-Arab system has considerably improved.

Book excerpt: Islamic movements in North Africa have historically been distinguished from their counterparts in other parts of the Arab world because they have demonstrated a marked willingness to work within the political system and have at times even been officially recognized and allowed to participate in local and national elections. As a result, Islamic thinkers from the Maghrib have produced important writing about the role of Islam and the state, democracy, and nonviolent change. In this book, Emad Shahin offers a comparative analysis of the Islamic movements in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, exploring their formation and expansion in the late 1960s and the tenets of their ideology for social transformation. }Islamic movements in North Africa have historically been distinguished from their counterparts in other parts of the Arab world because they have demonstrated a marked willingness to work within the political system and have at times even been officially recognized and allowed to participate in local and national elections. He argues that the formation and expansion of Islamic movements since the late 1960s has come in response to the marginalization of Islam in state and society and to a perceived failure of imported models of development to resolve socioeconomic problems or to incorporate the Muslim belief system into a workable plan for social transformation. }

Book excerpt: This book offers the only comprehensive overview of the Palestinian economy in the West Bank and Gaza. It focuses on the unique features of this unusual economy during the last thirty years. Under Israeli occupation, the Palestinian economy suffered from poorly developed domestic labor and capital markets, and considerable dependence on the highly developed Israeli economy for employment, trade and financial resources. The book analyses past trends, present conditions and alternative arrangements for the future. A comprehensive data set is used and, for the first time, the public is presented with a detailed picture of the Palestinian economy, with tables and graphs. The authors propose new institutional arrangements between the Palestinian and Israeli economies - an economic filters plan - which will promote neither total integration nor total separation. The book will be of great value to anyone interested in the political economy of the Middle East, the economics of occupation and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
