Book excerpt: "Authoritative and clearly written."—Applied Optics The direct observation of short-lived free radicals and the consequent study of their structure and reactions have led to important developments in almost every branch of chemistry as well as in other areas. This volume by a Nobel laureate offers an excellent introduction to the essentials of molecular spectroscopy. The introductory chapter discusses experimental methods and illustrates the observed spectra of various molecules and free radicals. Subsequent chapters explore rotational, vibrational, and electronic energy levels of diatomic molecules and ions; radiative transitions; linear and nonlinear polyatomic radicals and ions; continuous and diffuse spectra; predissociation and pre-ionization; and recombination. The well-illustrated text features more than 100 figures and spectra. A distilled version of the author's monumental three-volume study, Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure, it constitutes a superb resource for anyone wishing a concise but complete treatment of the fundamentals of molecular spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: Two Nobel Laureates present a systematic, comprehensive account of the theory, techniques, experimental data, and interpretation involved in the study of microwave spectroscopy—a subject relevant to nuclear physics, molecular structure, chemical kinetics, quantum electrodynamics, and astronomy. The material in this volume is discussed critically, systematically, and in the simplest form. The simplicity of the wording and mathematics makes most of the contents accessible to those with a very elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics and atomic physics. Although the treatment is continuously developed, each of the 18 chapters is self-contained. Nearly 200 tables and figures augment the text. Appendixes supply most of the background for research and interpretation of microwave spectra; they also contain extensive data on nuclear and molecular constants, including essentially all those determined by microwave techniques. "Equally suitable for use as a fundamental reference or advanced textbook." — U.S. Quarterly Book Review.

Book excerpt: Molecular Spectroscopy: Modern Research explores the advances in several phases of research in molecular spectroscopy. This eight-chapter book commemorates the 25th anniversary of the annual Columbus Symposium on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy, held in September, 1970. This book highlights the spectroscopic studies of molecular species in the gas phase and in matrices. Representative articles are also included that cover the applications of molecular studies in a wide variety of areas such as biophysics, astrophysical problems, and energy transfer processes. Other chapters describe the progress achieved in the technology of high resolution spectroscopy and the techniques and terminology of Lamb-dip spectroscopy. A comprehensive bibliography is included for most of the subjects discussed and this text concludes with tables of standard data listing secondary wavelength standards, fundamental constants, atomic masses, and conversion factors of interest to spectroscopists. Spectroscopists, chemists, and researchers will find this work invaluable.

In older days chemists mixed starting materials in a flask and took the resul tants out of it after a while, leaving all the intermediate steps uncleared as a sort of black box. One had to be content with only changing temperature and pressure to accelerate or decelerate chemical reactions, and there was almost no hope of initiating new reactions. However, a number of new techniques and new methods have been introduced and have provided us with a clue to the examination of the black box of chemical reaction. Flash photolysis, which was invented in the 1950s, is such an example; this method has been combined with high-resolution electronic spectroscopy with photographic recording of the spectra to provide a large amount of precise and detailed data on transient molecules which occur as intermediates during the course of chemical reac tions. In 1960 a fundamentally new light source was devised, i. e. , the laser. When the present author and coworkers started high-resolution spectroscopic stud ies of transient molecules at a new research institute, the Institute for Molecu lar Science in Okazaki in 1975, the time was right to exploit this new light source and its microwave precursor in order to shed light on the black box.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Spectroscopy: Modern Research, Volume III is a collection of papers presented at the 40th Annual Molecular Spectroscopy Symposium, held at the Ohio State University. The contributors of this seven-chapter text cover the significant advances in molecular spectroscopic research and their application in chemistry. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss first the higher-order vibration-rotation interactions in molecules and then present formulas and an insight into the direction being taken in theoretical pursuits. Chapter 3 provides an extensive compilation of published intensity and collision broadening parameters derived from infrared spectra. This chapter also contains a detailed discussion using consistent notation of some of the methods commonly applied to extract such information from laboratory spectra. Chapter 4 examines a variety of laser systems and their application in investigations involving triatomic free radicals and ions, while chapter 5 considers the developments in the microwave spectroscopic studies on nonpolar molecules when their symmetry is reduced by isotopic substitution. Chapter 6 emphasizes the quasi-linear molecular problem to develop an appreciation of the symptoms of quasi-linearity and theoretical treatments thereof. This chapter also examines the increasing role of highly resolved spectra in the interpretation of various large-amplitude motions in molecules. Lastly, Chapter 7 describes the electric multipolar moments of hydrogen and its isotopes. Spectroscopists, chemists, and researchers will find this work invaluable.

Book excerpt: Physical Chemistry covers the session lectures presented at the 26th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, held in Tokyo, Japan on 4-10 September 1977. The book focuses on the processes, reactions, properties, and transformations of molecules, including energy transfer and spectroscopy. The selection first discusses the applications of lasers in chemical spectroscopy and dynamics; microwave spectral studies of interstellar molecules; and molecular reaction dynamics by the crossed molecular beam technique. The text also reviews the chemical applications of ionizing excited atom-molecule collisions, including penning ionization by metastables and non-metastables, ionization in collisions with high-N-Rydberg atoms, and true associative ionization. The manuscript examines the picosecond time-resolved measurements of vibrational energy transfer and relaxation phenomena in large polyatomic molecules and microwave spectroscopy of short-lived molecules. The text also ponders on the electronic structures of aromatic hydrocarbons with high spin multiplicities in the electronic ground state and non-stoichiometry and structural disorder in inorganic compounds. The selection is a dependable reference for chemists and readers interested in pure and applied chemistry.
