The microwave dielectric properties at low temperatures and the impedance spectroscopy of the microwave dielectrics have been reported. Thin films of (Zr0.8Sn0.2)TiO4 have been deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering from individual metal targets using single cathode along with its sub oxides (TiO2, ZrO2 and ZrTiO4). The crystal structure, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of the films are reported in detail. The dielectric properties of all the deposited films were reported both at low and at microwave frequencies. The correlations between the structure and microwave dielectric properties of (Zr0.8Sn0.2)TiO4 have been discussed both in bulk and thin film forms.

Book excerpt: The application of thin ferroelectric films for frequency and phase agile components is the topic of interest of many research groups worldwide. Consequently, proof-of-concepts (POC) of different tunable microwave components using either (HTS, metal)/ferroelectric thin film/dielectric heterostructures or (thick, thin) film "flip-chip" technology have been reported. Either as ferroelectric thin film characterization tools or from the point of view of circuit implementation approach, both configurations have their respective advantages and limitations. However, we believe that because of the progress made so far using the heterostructure (i.e., multilayer) approach, and due to its intrinsic features such as planar configuration and monolithic integration, a study on the correlation of circuit geometry aspects and ferroelectric material properties could accelerate the insertion of this technology into working systems. In this paper, we will discuss our study performed on circuits based on microstrip lines at frequencies above 10 GHz, where the multilayer configuration offers greater ease of insertion due to circuit's size reduction. Modeled results of relevant circuit parameters such as the characteristic impedance, effective dielectric constant, and attenuation as a function of ferroelectric film's dielectric constant, tans, and thickness, will be presented for SrTiO3 and Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 ferroelectric films. A comparison between the modeled and experimental data for some of these parameters will be presented. Book excerpt: Most measurements of the microwave surface resistance (Rs) of polycrystalline pellets, single-crystals, and thin-films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) have shown values far exceeding what is expected for a superconductor. The most likely reason for this is the losses arising from the presence of grain and phase boundaries in the samples that have been studied. Until now, the lowest surface resistances for YBCO thin films have been measured by Klein et al. on highly oriented laser-deposited thin films on SrTiO3 which had Tc's up to 88K. As a consequence of the relatively lower processing temperatures common to the laser deposition techniques, these films probably possess minimal granularity and better surfaces than most high-temperature-processed thin films. The above measurement was performed at 77K at a frequency of 86.i GHz with the film surface forming a wall of copper cavity; the Rs was found to be an order of magnitude lower than that for Cu at the same temperature and frequency and decidedly lower than Rs values measured for bulk polycrystalline, and surprisingly, even single-crystal YBCO samples.
