Book excerpt: This book is a systematic guide to the recognition and interpretation of deformation microstructures and mechanisms in minerals and rocks at the scale of a thin section. Diagnostic features of microstructures and mechanisms are emphasized, and the subject is extensively illustrated with high-quality color and black and white photomicrographs, and many clear diagrams. After introducing three main classes of deformation microstructures and mechanisms, low- to high-grade deformation is presented in a logical sequence in Chapters 2 to 5. Magmatic/submagmatic deformation, shear sense indicators, and shock microstructures and metamorphism are described in Chapters 6 to 8, which are innovative chapters in a structural geology textbook. The final chapter shows how deformation microstructures and mechanisms can be used quantitatively to understand the behavior of the earth. Recent experimental research on failure criteria, frictional sliding laws, and flow laws is summarized in tables, and palaeopiezometry is discussed. Audience: This book is essential to all practising structural and tectonic geologists who use thin sections, and is an invaluable research tool for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and researchers in structural geology and tectonics.

Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the most authoritative and comprehensive book inits field, the fourth edition of Fundamentals of RockMechanics includes new and substantially updated chapters tothis highly praised text. Extensively updated throughout, this new edition containssubstantially expanded chapters on poroelasticity, wavepropogation, and subsurface stresses Features entirely new chapters on rock fractures andmicromechanical models of rock behaviour Discusses fundamental concepts such as stress and strain Offers a thorough introduction to the subject before expertlydelving into a fundamental, self-contained discussion of specifictopics Unavailable for many years, now back by popular demand. An Instructor manual CD-ROM for this title is available. Pleasecontact our Higher Education team at ahref="mailto:[email protected]"[email protected]/afor more information. Reviews: “With this attention to detail, and rigorous adherence toclarity and exactness in description, this edition will consolidatethe standing achieved by the earlier editions as a mostauthoritative and comprehensive book in its field. It will continueto serve as a leading reference work for geoscientists interestedin structural geology, tectonics and petrophysics as well as forcivil, mining and petroleum engineers.” (PetroleumGeoscience) "...I consider this book to be an invaluable reference forstudying and understanding the fundamental science at the base ofrock mechanics. I believe this to be a must-have textbook and Istrongly recommend it to anyone, student or professional, interested in the subject." (Rock Mechanics and RockEngineering) "An excellent book, very well presented, and is a must for theshelves of serious engineers and scientists active or interested inthe fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering.... Highlyrecommended." (South African Geographical Journal, 2008)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all solids are compised of grains. However most studies treat materials as a continious solid. The book applies analysis used on loose granular materials to dense grainular materials. This title’s main focus is devoted to static or dynamic loadings applied to dense materials, although rapid flows and widely dispersed media are also mentioned briefly. Three essential areas are covered: Local variable analysis: Contact forces, displacements and rotations, orientation of contacting particles and fabric tensors are all examples of local variables. Their statistical distributions, such as spatial distribution and possible localization, are analyzed, taking into account experimental results or numerical simulations. Change of scales procedures: Also known as “homogenization techniques”, these procedures make it possible to construct continuum laws to be used in a continuum mechanics approach or performing smaller scale analyses. Numerical modeling: Several methods designed to calculate approximate solutions of dynamical equations together with unilateral contact and frictional laws are presented, including molecular dynamics, the distinct element method and non-smooth contact dynamics. Numerical examples are given and the quality of numerical approximations is discussed.
