Book Synopsis Microbiological Safety in U.S. and Foreign Laboratories by : G. Briggs Phillips
Download or read book Microbiological Safety in U.S. and Foreign Laboratories written by G. Briggs Phillips and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of microbiological safety in 102 laboratories in 18 countries shows that methods used to control laboratory accidents and illnesses vary widely and that only a few laboratories are reasonably successful. Considering the various available approaches for improving safety in the handling of infectious microorganisms, there is need for critical experimental evaluation to determine under what conditions improvements are or are not desirable and the effectiveness of those changes made. Of special interest to the Department of the Army would be the ability of laboratories throughout the free world to operate safely with infectious microorganisms under non-peacetime conditions. Through continued analysis of the world-wide status of microbiological safety and through improved communications with foreign laboratories, the Biological Laboratories could gather information applicable in its safety program and make a significant contribution to the ability of other laboratories to safely carry out biological defense programs. Book excerpt: Biosafety in the Laboratory is a concise set of practical guidelines for handling and disposing of biohazardous material. The consensus of top experts in laboratory safety, this volume provides the information needed for immediate improvement of safety practices. It discusses high- and low-risk biological agents (including the highest-risk materials handled in labs today), presents the "seven basic rules of biosafety," addresses special issues such as the shipping of dangerous materials, covers waste disposal in detail, offers a checklist for administering laboratory safetyâ€"and more.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety Measures by : S.B. Pal
Download or read book Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety Measures written by S.B. Pal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, many books, governmental reports and regu lations on safety measures against chemieals, fire, microbiological and radioactive hazards in laboratories have been published from various coun tries. These topics have also been briefly discussed in books on laboratory planning and management. The application ofvarious scientific instruments based on different ionizing and non-ionizing radiations have brought new safety problems to the laboratory workers of today, irrespective of their scientific disciplines, be they medicine, natural or life sciences. However, no comprehensive laboratory handbook dealing with aIl these hazards, some of which are recently introduced, had so far been available in a single volume. Therefore, it was thought worthwhile to publish this Handbook on safety and health measures for laboratories, with contributions from several experts on these subjects. As this second edition of the Handbook, like the first edition, is a multiauthor volume, some duplication in conte nt among chapters is unavoidable in order to maintain the context of a chapter as weIl as make each chapter complete. An attempt has also been made to maintain the central theme, which is how to work in a laboratory with maximum possible environmental safety.

This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During July 10-13, 2011, 68 participants from 32 countries gathered in Istanbul, Turkey for a workshop organized by the United States National Research Council on Anticipating Biosecurity Challenges of the Global Expansion of High-containment Biological Laboratories. The United States Department of State's Biosecurity Engagement Program sponsored the workshop, which was held in partnership with the Turkish Academy of Sciences. The international workshop examined biosafety and biosecurity issues related to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of high-containment biological laboratories- equivalent to United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention biological safety level 3 or 4 labs. Although these laboratories are needed to characterize highly dangerous human and animal pathogens, assist in disease surveillance, and produce vaccines, they are complex systems with inherent risks. Biosecurity Challenges of the Global Expansion of High-Containment Biological Laboratories summarizes the workshop discussion, which included the following topics: Technological options to meet diagnostic, research, and other goals; Laboratory construction and commissioning; Operational maintenance to provide sustainable capabilities, safety, and security; and Measures for encouraging a culture of responsible conduct. Workshop attendees described the history and current challenges they face in their individual laboratories. Speakers recounted steps they were taking to improve safety and security, from running training programs to implementing a variety of personnel reliability measures. Many also spoke about physical security, access controls, and monitoring pathogen inventories. Workshop participants also identified tensions in the field and suggested possible areas for action.
