Book excerpt: The history of Michigan is a fascinating story of breathtaking geography enriched by an abundant water supply, of bold fur traders and missionaries who developed settlements that grew into major cities, of ingenious entrepreneurs who established thriving industries, and of celebrated cultural icons like the Motown sound. It is also the story of the exploitation of Native Americans, racial discord that resulted in a devastating riot, and ongoing tensions between employers and unions. Michigan: A History of Explorers, Entrepreneurs, and Everyday People recounts this colorful past and the significant role the state has played in shaping the United States. Well-researched and engagingly written, the book spans from Michigan’s geologic formation to important 21st-century developments in a concise but detailed chronicle that will appeal to general readers, scholars, and students interested in Michigan’s past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Alpena County, Michigan: Giving Sketch of Michigan From Its Early Settlement, Fortunes and Misfortunes of First Settlers; The Survey, Settlement and Growth of Alpena County, From 1837 to 1876 In order to show the progress and development of Alpena county, it will be necessary to go back to the earliest days of its settlement by white people, and to show the circumstances, conditions and influences by which they wtre surrounded at the time of such settlement, as these have much to do with their future prosperity and happiness, and determines in no small degree the character of their popular institutions. And hence this work would be incomplete without referring to the History of the State of Michigan - at the time and since its admission into the Sisterhood of States. An act was passed by Congress, on the 10th day of June, 1836, for the admission of Michigan as one of the States of the Union; but with the then humiliating condition, that it would relinquish its claim to the southern boundry, (which was a narrow strip or land extending from Lake Michigan to Lake Erie, and claimed by Indiana and Ohio, ) and accept instead thereof, the Upper Peninsula, which was then an unexplored region, and considered of no probable value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General History of the State of Michigan; With Biographical Sketches, Portrait Engravings, and Numerous Illustrations: A Complete History of the Peninsular State From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time Some one has very properly written that the country is already overloaded with histories of itself; and the same writer as properly adds Not one of them pretends to constitute a general history of the United States in volumes, embracing a complete history of each State separately - a work that would be of incalculable value to the archives of every Commonwealth of the American Repub lic. It has been offered in reply to this, that the early history of the United States is so consolidated and intermingled as not to admit of being divided into volumes that would adapt themselves respectively to each State. The last argument holds good only in so far as the task of compiling such a work is a difficult one, involving much labor that can scarcely hope for just compensa tion. The work presented in this volume is threefold in its character, embracing a general history of Michigan, from its earliest settlement to the present time (unincumbered by the records of a neighboring Commonwealth), including illustrations and brief descriptive sketches of the most prominent features of the Peninsular State, with portraits and short biographical sketches of its present leading business and professional men. This book was released on 1984-12-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian Bruce Catton is known to millions of readers for his absorbing works on the Civil War. In this book, he turns to his native Michigan to tell a story of what happened when a primitive wilderness changed into a bustling industrial center so fast that it was as if the old French explorer Etienne Brule "should step up to shake hands with Henry Ford." The idea that abundance was "inexhaustible--that fatal Michigan word," as the author calls it--dominated thinking about the state from the days when Commandant Cadillac's soldiers arrived at Detroit until his name became a brand of car. Viewed in this light, Michigan is a case study of all America, and Americans in any state will be fascinated. In a colorful, dramatic past, Mr. Catton finds understanding of where we are in the present and what the future will make us face.
