Book Synopsis Access to Knowledge in the Age of Intellectual Property by : Gaëlle Krikorian
Download or read book Access to Knowledge in the Age of Intellectual Property written by Gaëlle Krikorian and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A movement emerges to challenge the tightening of intellectual property law around the world. At the end of the twentieth century, intellectual property rights collided with everyday life. Expansive copyright laws and digital rights management technologies sought to shut down new forms of copying and remixing made possible by the Internet. International laws expanding patent rights threatened the lives of millions of people around the world living with HIV/AIDS by limiting their access to cheap generic medicines. For decades, governments have tightened the grip of intellectual property law at the bidding of information industries; but recently, groups have emerged around the world to challenge this wave of enclosure with a new counter-politics of "access to knowledge" or "A2K." They include software programmers who took to the streets to defeat software patents in Europe, AIDS activists who forced multinational pharmaceutical companies to permit copies of their medicines to be sold in poor countries, subsistence farmers defending their rights to food security or access to agricultural biotechnology, and college students who created a new "free culture" movement to defend the digital commons. Access to Knowledge in the Age of Intellectual Property maps this emerging field of activism as a series of historical moments, strategies, and concepts. It gathers some of the most important thinkers and advocates in the field to make the stakes and strategies at play in this new domain visible and the terms of intellectual property law intelligible in their political implications around the world. Book Synopsis Opening Standards by : Laura Denardis
Download or read book Opening Standards written by Laura Denardis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and political stakes in the current heated debates over “openness” and open standards in the Internet's architecture. Openness is not a given on the Internet. Technical standards—the underlying architecture that enables interoperability among hardware and software from different manufacturers—increasingly control individual freedom and the pace of innovation in technology markets. Heated battles rage over the very definition of “openness” and what constitutes an open standard in information and communication technologies. In Opening Standards, experts from industry, academia, and public policy explore just what is at stake in these controversies, considering both economic and political implications of open standards. The book examines the effect of open standards on innovation, on the relationship between interoperability and public policy (and if government has a responsibility to promote open standards), and on intellectual property rights in standardization—an issue at the heart of current global controversies. Finally, Opening Standards recommends a framework for defining openness in twenty-first-century information infrastructures. Contributors discuss such topics as how to reflect the public interest in the private standards-setting process; why open standards have a beneficial effect on competition and Internet freedom; the effects of intellectual property rights on standards openness; and how to define standard, open standard, and software interoperability.
Book Synopsis Higher Education and Innovation by : Vincenzo Sapienza
Download or read book Higher Education and Innovation written by Vincenzo Sapienza and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the design of an educational module for an innovative intensive program. The theme is very relevant in the contemporary approach to teaching activities. In fact, thanks to the didactic design, it is possible to obtain a strong relationship between teachers and learners, as required by the Bologna Process. It also allows a stronger definition of learning outcomes. After a general excursus on the subject, the manuscript refers to a recent experience carried out in the Aeolian Island for the Erasmus + Programme, called VVITA. In it, an international group of students and teachers spent a period in the Aeolian Islands, to focus on the features of local vernacular architecture. The attention has been addressed to the Aeolian House, which is a wonderful example of ante litteram sustainable architecture. On the island of Filicudi, one of the most beautiful of the archipelago, it has preserved its characteristics intact. The book is completed by teachers’ lectures and students’ final reports.

Book Synopsis Searching for Life by : Rita Arditti
Download or read book Searching for Life written by Rita Arditti and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-04-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE BOOK:"I want to touch you and kiss you.""You are my mother's sister and only one year older; you must have something of my mother in you."—A found child after being returned to her family Searching for Life traces the courageous plight of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, a group of women who challenged the ruthless dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. Acting as both detectives and human rights advocates in an effort to find and recover their grandchildren, the Grandmothers identified fifty-seven of an estimated 500 children who had been kidnapped or born in detention centers. The Grandmothers' work also led to the creation of the National Genetic Data Bank, the only bank of its kind in the world, and to Article 8 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the "right to identity," that is now incorporated in the new adoption legislation in Argentina. Rita Arditti has conducted extensive interviews with twenty Grandmothers and twenty-five others connected with their work; her book is a testament to the courage, persistence, and strength of these "traditional" older women. The importance of the Grandmothers' work has effectively transcended the Argentine situation. Their tenacious pursuit of justice defies the culture of impunity and the historical amnesia that pervades Argentina and much of the rest of the world today. In addition to reconciling the "living disappeared" with their families of origin, these Grandmothers restored a chapter of history that, too, had been abducted and concealed from its rightful heirs.
Book Synopsis Feasibility Study and Business Plan by : Kathleen Peterson
Download or read book Feasibility Study and Business Plan written by Kathleen Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feasibility study and business planLearn How to Present a Completed Feasibility StudyA feasibility study is a thoroughly researched analysis of a plan or method. The purpose of a feasibility study is to determine and then communicate whether an action being considered is practical for a business or project. These studies usually contain detailed information about the financial structure for the plan and an analysis of the market with regards to the proposal (if needed). It also contains the suggested logistics for delivering a product or service, the resources you'll need, the personnel support and the organizational structure required. Presenting your feasibility study is just as important as the work you put into it.How to Assemble Your Feasibility StudyHow you present your final study is just as important as the information it contains. If you have a lot of material, organize it into a portfolio or binder. Finding information easily and quickly is important to executives, managers, lenders, and investors, so include tabs (type them if at all possible) to indicate each component in your study.Cover letters should not be generic but should be individualized depending upon with whom you are submitting the study. Before you submit your study, have someone else proofread it for you to check for content and errors.Typographical errors will make your study appear rushed or unprofessional, and if your descriptions and calculations do not make sense to the reader the action will be ruled unfeasible as presented.Although you write your conclusion last, it serves as a summary of the details in your study. You can place it at the end of your document (before any exhibits and attachments), but placing it after the table of contents sets the tone and highlights key issues for the reader to be aware of before they read the rest of the study.
