Download or read book Michelangelo (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Clement and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michelangelo When we turn from his art to his life we find a typical superman of the Renaissance. A tremendous worker, an almost savage egoist in his preoccupation with whatever task he had set his hand to, he is the epitome of his period. Fate and the record of his prowess brought him into contact with two other great men, Lorenzo de Medici and Pope Julius 2md, and the history of their relations is the history of Michelangelo's life. Among these giants, as one might imagine, things were not easy; and in a tempera ment as difficult as the Bounarroti's his masters and patrons found no easy protegee. The famous quarrel with Julius forms a magnificent vignette of the life of the Renaissance. Alongside the artistic difficulties which arose from the conflicting desires of the princes and popes who demanded Michelangelo's services, were those which came from the troubled political state, and here again we find the artist torn by conflicting loyalties. His temperamental repub licanism versus his love for the Lorenzi, his work for the Popes and for Florence, these things could only be accepted in a man whose every effort was so excellent that none could afford permanently to quarrel with him if his services could be bought by reconciliation. At one brief period his work and an engineer and master of fortifications at Florence made him the hero of the Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys: To the Homes of Eminent Painters Michael Angelo was born in a shabby little village but a few miles from Flor ence. In another village near by was born Leonardo. Great men never come singly, says Emerson. And yet Angelo and Leonardo exercised no in uence upon each other that we can trace. The younger man never came under the spell of the older one, but moved straight on to his destiny, showing not the slightest arc in his orbit in deference to the great luminary of his time. Book Synopsis The Lost Battles by : Jonathan Jones
Download or read book The Lost Battles written by Jonathan Jones and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of Britain’s most respected and acclaimed art historians, art critic of The Guardian—the galvanizing story of a sixteenth-century clash of titans, the two greatest minds of the Renaissance, working side by side in the same room in a fierce competition: the master Leonardo da Vinci, commissioned by the Florentine Republic to paint a narrative fresco depicting a famous military victory on a wall of the newly built Great Council Hall in the Palazzo Vecchio, and his implacable young rival, the thirty-year-old Michelangelo. We see Leonardo, having just completed The Last Supper, and being celebrated by all of Florence for his miraculous portrait of the wife of a textile manufacturer. That painting—the Mona Lisa—being called the most lifelike anyone had ever seen yet, more divine than human, was captivating the entire Florentine Republic. And Michelangelo, completing a commissioned statue of David, the first colossus of the Renaissance, the archetype hero for the Republic epitomizing the triumph of the weak over the strong, helping to reshape the public identity of the city of Florence and conquer its heart. In The Lost Battles, published in England to great acclaim (“Superb”—The Observer; “Beguilingly written”—The Guardian), Jonathan Jones brilliantly sets the scene of the time—the politics; the world of art and artisans; and the shifting, agitated cultural landscape. We see Florence, a city freed from the oppressive reach of the Medicis, lurching from one crisis to another, trying to protect its liberty in an Italy descending into chaos, with the new head of the Republic in search of a metaphor that will make clear the glory that is Florence, and seeing in the commissioned paintings the expression of his vision. Jones reconstructs the paintings that Leonardo and Michelangelo undertook—Leonardo’s Battle of Anghiari, a nightmare seen in the eyes of the warrior (it became the first modern depiction of the disenchantment of war) and Michelangelo’s Battle of Cascina, a call to arms and the first great transfiguration of the erotic into art. Jones writes about the competition; how it unfolded and became the defining moment in the transformation of “craftsman” to “artist”; why the Florentine government began to fall out of love with one artist in favor of the other; and how—and why—in a competition that had no formal prize to clearly resolve the outcome, the battle became one for the hearts and minds of the Florentine Republic, with Michelangelo setting out to prove that his work, not Leonardo’s, embodied the future of art. Finally, we see how the result of the competition went on to shape a generation of narrative paintings, beginning with those of Raphael. A riveting exploration into one of history’s most resonant exchanges of ideas, a rich, fascinating book that gives us a whole new understanding of an age and those at its center.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michelangelo: A Record of His Life as Told in His Own Letters and Papers Then, too, there are other gaps in his correspondence which can only be due to the loss of some of his letters, and these I have endeavoured to bridge as lightly as possible in order to avoid the imputation of having myself taken an unfair share of the space at my disposal for the whole work. Such notes as these serve only to link one letter to the other and do not pretend to deal with all or any of the events which occurred in the intervals, and which will be found fully dealt with by such writers as Grimm, Symonds, Sir Charles Holroyd and Mr. Gerald 8. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists In Leonardo's Treatise on Painting, only one contempo rary is named - Sandro Botticelli. The Pagan and Christian world mingle in the work of Botticelli; but the man himself belonged to an age that is past and gone - an age that flourished long before men recorded history. His best efforts seem to spring out of a heart that forgot all precedent, and arose, Venus-like, perfect and complete, from the unfathom.
