Book excerpt: Mi Karnival of Papier-mâché is an honest, intelligent and unapologetic memoir chronicling the life and times of Miyor Paul Toussaint who throughout his conquest to become great never gives up hopes of not only become a fashion designer, but a better being along the journey. The-mâché novel follows the life and times of the starving artist/fashion designer from his struggling in not so humble beginning in Haiti and finishing out the conquest in the great city of Paris, France. Aside from his journey out of Haiti into Paris to fulfil a lifelong dream, he must make peace with decisions and information unearthed and move his world towards change-including how to be a better friend The novel addresses the difficulties of becoming a welcomed black fashion designer, his on/off battles with various addictions (sex, drugs, and alcohol), but the world’s sometimes ugly reflections with inspiring and make changes along the way. Papier-mâché also explores the island of Haiti’s ongoing problems with being accepted by the rest of the world-as does Miyor. Astonishingly, regardless of the struggles and pains Miyor triumphs on and through the bright lights of Paris and beyond to become all there is to be- his way while on the road to the riches, ending with presenting to you with a ticket to his Karnival of mâché. a little messy, but presentable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico in September 2017, it left no part of the archipelago unscathed. The hurricane triggered floods and mudslides, washed out roads, destroyed tens of thousands of homes, farms, and businesses, caused the largest blackout in US history, knocked out communications, led to widespread food, drinking water, and gasoline shortages, and caused thousands of deaths. The seventeen oral histories collected in Mi María: Surviving the Storm share stories of surviving the storm and its long aftermath as people waited for relief and aid that rarely arrived. Zaira and her husband floated on a patched air mattress for sixteen hours while floodwaters rose around them. The road washed out in front of Emmanuel as he desperately tried to drive his pregnant wife who had begun labor to the hospital. Luis and his father anxiously counted the days that the dialysis clinic remained closed and lifesaving treatment was unavailable, while Miliana’s mother was sent home from the hospital —undiagnosed— only to fall critically ill in her own home. Weaving together long-form oral histories and shorter testimonios, the book offers a multivocal peoples’ history of disaster that fosters a greater understanding of the failures of governmental disaster response and the correlating perseverance of the people impacted by these failures, highlighting the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. Ultimately, the ways in which these oral histories demonstrate the strength of community response to disaster in Puerto Rico are pertinent to other parts of the world that are being impacted by our current climate emergency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvisation is a performance practice that animates and activates diverse energies of inspiration, critique, and invention. In recent years it has coalesced into an exciting and innovative new field of interdisciplinary scholarly inquiry, becoming a cornerstone of both practical and theoretical approaches to performance. The Improvisation Studies Reader draws together the works of key artists and thinkers from a range of disciplines, including theatre, music, literature, film, and dance. Divided by keywords into eight sections, this book bridges the gaps between these fields. The book includes case studies, exercises, graphic scores and poems in order to produce a teaching and research resource that identifies central themes in improvisation studies. The sections include: Listening Trust/Risk Flow Dissonance Responsibility Liveness Surprise Hope Each section of the Reader is introduced by a newly commissioned think piece by a key figure in the field, which opens up research questions reflecting on the keyword in question. By placing key theoretical and classic texts in conversation with cutting-edge research and artists’ statements, this book answers the urgent questions facing improvising artists and theorists in the mediatized Twenty-First Century.
