Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oriental Peach Moth It 1s believed that the rapid and extensive spread of this insect has been due chiefly to shipments of infested fruit and nursery trees bearing overwintering larvae in cocoons. The dispersal of infested fruit by means of automobiles and railroads undoubtedly has been a more important method of distribution than dispersal by means of infested nursery stock. Spread by normal flight of the insect has been of a local character, and can not account for the long distances which occur between old and newly infested areas. After an infestation gets a start in a given locality the adults may fly from one orchard to another. Some have been recorded as flying one fourth mile or more, but the maxi mum flight is unknown. In scouting for newly infested areas it has been repeatedly noted that new infestations are commonly found on fruit trees, primarily peach, plum, cherry, and quince trees, located in back yards or home orchards ln small and large towns. This fact strongly suggests that the source of the new infestations has been wormy fruit discarded by the housewife and merchant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgia Pest Management Handbook provides current information on selection, application, and safe use of pest control chemicals. This handbook has recommendations for pest control around homes and on pets; for pests of home garden vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals; and for pests of public health interest associated with our homes. Cultural, biological, physical, and other types of control are recommended where appropriate. Pesticide recommendations are based on information on the manufacturer labels and on performance data from research and extension trials at the University of Georgia and its sister institutions. Because environmental conditions, the severity of pest pressure, and methods of application vary widely, recommendations do not imply that performance of pesticides will always be acceptable. This publication is intended to be used only as a guide. Trade and brand names are used only for information. The University of Georgia does not guarantee nor warrant published standards on any product mentioned; nor does the use of a trade or brand name imply approval of any product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable. Always follow the use instructions and precautions on the pesticide label. Book excerpt: This report is aimed at private sector involvement in the production phase of sterile insects for use in pest control. It is a guideline or tool to support the development of more specific business plans that will need to be prepared on a case by case basis, taking into account the species to be reared and the location of the facility. It provides the international perspective on a number of issues of importance for a sterile insect production facility. While some of the points raised will be well known by everybody working in the sector and are included to inform potential investors, other findings present new challenges to production facility managers, whether in private industry or government organizations.

Book excerpt: It is a great honor and indeed a privilege for me to write the Foreword to this book, the first of its kind from the Forest Products Research Institute The study of forest insects is now becoming a matter of great concern to many people all over the world because insects damage the already depleted forests and forest resources. In Ghana very little interest was shown in the insects of forest trees and products. But as forest practices have become more intensive so also have the pests on the crops increased and the damage caused increased to alarming proportions. Foresters are now becoming in creasingly aware of the immense havoc that some of these insects can cause. To aid the fight against the pests they have to be fully identified and studied so that effective control measures can be implemented. It is in an effort to bridge this gap in our knowledge that one welcomes this book by Professor Michael R. Wagner, Dr. S.K.N. Atuahene and Dr.
