Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic lift is used during re-entry to provide range maneuverability so that a precise site can be selected and a horizontal landing capability can be provided. Maximum maneuverability may be achieved by modulating the hypersonic lift-to drag ratio (L/D). In this study the lifting re entry configuration was optimized to maximize hypersonic L/D within the heating, stability, and landing constraints. Eleven pertinent constraint equations were formulated, and numerical calcula tions of the complete aerodynamic characteristics and configurational geometry were determined. The IBM 7090 computer was used to solve the 11 constraint equations through an iteration tech nique and to perform the maximization process. Optimum configurational geometries were evaluated for three wing loadings at vehicle weights of 10,000 and 100,000 pounds. Results show that higher L/D values can be achieved with low aspect ratio, low wing loadings, and large scale vehi cles. The complete geometry for one of the typical optimums is shown as an example.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A symposium on Aerothermoelasticity was held to present the latest significant developments in each scientific area and engineering area that comprise the component parts of this technology. New and significant contributions were presented in four technical areas consisting of dynamic aerothermoelasticity (flutter), stability and control, thermodynamics and aerodynamics (or aerothermodynamics), and structures including material and construction concepts. Categories important and significant to each technical area are discussed state-of-the-art wise. In addition, 26 separate papers are given on items of special importance.

Book excerpt: The development of complex lifting configurations and high speed maneuvering vehicles has emphasized the need for numerical techniques to predict aerodynamic heating rates as a function of the vehicle trajectory. These numerical programs are not expected to eliminate the requirements for wind tunnel and flight testing, but will be an aid to more efficient use of experimentation time and improve confidence that all potential problem areas on the vehicle have been examined. Three programs, the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, the MINIVER Program, and a third program were examined to determine their usefulness for vehicles with non-circular cross sections and large flat areas as exemplified by lifting reentry vehicles. The MINIVER code was found to be unsuitable for this; the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program was applicable to these shapes, but because of program limitations was used for only limited calculations. The last program also had limitations in the areas of geometry description and surface pressure calculations. Efforts were made to remove these limitations and several shapes were investigated. The ultimate goal of this effort was to extend the capabilities of one or more of the heating codes; while no effort was made to improve MINIVER or the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, significant improvements were made in the last program and inviscid flow field program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of six types of flight paths for the deceleration from circular and supercircular speeds are developed in closed form. The heating rate, heat input per square foot obtained from an integration over the flight path, the total heat vehicle, and the flight-path histories in terms of path angle, altitude, life coefficient, net acceleration, angle of attack and Reynolds number are discussed as a function of type of flight plan, initial net accelertion, and initial velocity. A flight plan with essentially a point landing capability is suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes a method that can calculate transient aerodynamic heating and transient surface temperatures at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This method can rapidly calculate temperature and heating rate time-histories for complete flight trajectories. Semi-empirical theories are used to calculate laminar and turbulent heat transfer coefficients and a procedure for estimating boundary-layer transition is included. Results from this method are compared with flight data from the X-15 research vehicle, YF-12 airplane, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter. These comparisons show that the calculated values are in good agreement with the measured flight data.
