Book excerpt: With ever tightening budgets and limitations of demolition equipment, states are looking for cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable methods for removing concrete decks from bridges. The goal of this research was to explore such methods. The research team conducted qualitative studies through a literature review, interviews, surveys, and workshops and performed small-scale trials and push-out tests (shear strength evaluations). Interviews with bridge owners and contractors indicated that concrete deck replacement was more economical than replacing an entire superstructure under the assumption that the salvaged superstructure has adequate remaining service life and capacity. Surveys and workshops provided insight into advantages and disadvantages of deck removal methods, information that was used to guide testing. Small-scale trials explored three promising deck removal methods: hydrodemolition, chemical splitting, and peeling.

Book excerpt: Wide flange precast/prestressed concrete I-girders have been widely used by several State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in the last two decades. These girders have many advantages over standard AASHTO I-girders. Their wide and thick bottom flange accommodates a large number of prestressing strands and their wide and thin top flange provides a shorter deck span, reduced girder weight, greater stability in construction, and adequate platform for workers. Despite these advantages, the wide and thin top flange might be disadvantageous when it comes to deck removal, as it is more susceptible to damage. Therefore there is a need to investigate the impact of deck removal methods on the performance of the supporting wide flange I-girder. In this thesis, two deck removal methods are presented: saw cutting and jack hammering. The two methods were implemented on the Camp Creek Bridge over I-80 in Lancaster County, NE before demolition due to its functional obsolesces. Different saw cutting and jack hammering techniques were performed for deck removal between girders and on top of girders. Data obtained from using similar techniques on three other projects were collected and analyzed. Two girders from the Camp Creek Bridge were taken to the lab for testing in flexure after applying different levels of deck removals around shear connectors and re-decking. Test results indicated adequate performance of the new composite section even when partial deck removal around shear connectors is applied. Another investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of top flange width on the performance of bridge I-girders. Top flange was assumed to be longitudinally saw cut and its width is reduced by fifty percent. The effects on geometrical properties, flexural capacity, horizontal shear capacity, and deflection were investigated analytically and experimentally under construction loads and service loads. Investigation results indicate that in some cases top flange width does not have significant impact on the structural performance of I-girders.

This 1698-ft-long steel bridge had wide flange girders with a 7-in.-thick composite reinforced concrete deck only 22 ft wide. A precast deck system, using 10-ft-long precast sections with the barrier attached, allowed overnight replacement of a least 30 ft of bridge deck per night.

Book excerpt: Results are reported from tests of small-scale push-off and large-scale composite NU I-girder specimens conducted to establish an interface connection detail that (1) Facilitates in-situ removal of the bridge deck without damaging prestressed girders, and (2) Maintains composite action between the prestressed girder and reinforced concrete deck throughout the service-life of the structure. Sixteen small-scale push-off tests were conducted to investigate the influence of surface preparation, bond breakers (epoxy and roofing felt), and interface reinforcement properties (yield strength, reinforcement amount, and means of anchorage) on horizontal shear transfer between precast and cast-in-place concrete surfaces. Based on the push-off test results, a connection detail was proposed that consists of roughening the top flange of the girder directly over the girder web and debonding the remainder of the interface using No. 30 ASTM D4869/D4869M-16a Type I organic roofing felt. Three full-scale composite NU35 girders, designed and fabricated using the proposed connection detail and two control connection details, were then subjected to a series of tests. First, decks were cast and then removed to quantify the extent to which the proposed connection detail reduced the effort to remove the deck and to document the types and extent of damage caused to the girders by the process. After replacing the decks, the composite girders were subjected to 2×10 (6) cycles of simulated traffic load and then loaded monotonically to failure. The proposed connection (partially roughened/partially debonded with a roofing felt bond breaker) is a viable option for use in practice; its use led to a 2/3 reduction in the effort required to remove the deck over the girder and protected the girder from all non-saw-related damage while also effectively sustaining composite action through 2×10 (6) cycles of simulated traffic load after deck replacement. The proposed connection can be conservatively designed by neglecting the debonded area when calculating interface shear strength. Other test results showed that surface preparation has a large influence on the stiffness, strength at cracking, and peak strength of a horizontal shear connection; each was greatest for specimens with a fully roughened surface followed by the partially roughened surface, troweled surface, and debonded surface. Increasing the amount of interface shear reinforcement increases the initial stiffness, shear strength at cracking, and peak and post-peak strength, and does so more effectively than a similar increase in reinforcement yield strength. Casting and removal of bridge decks without bond breakers does alter the top surface of bridge girders, but the surface can be returned to a qualitatively roughened surface with reasonable effort and care. Despite the changes to the top girder surface caused by deck removal, composite action was developed across the interface and remained stable through 2×10 (6) cycles of loading.

Book excerpt: This report describes the evaluation of the condition of concrete samples taken from sections of a five-span bridge in which the concrete in the parapet and deck along the exterior beam was removed using six different methods. Deck and parapet concrete was removed with 30-lb (14-kg) hammers, 90-lb (41-kg) hammers, a 750 ft-lb (104 m-kg) hoe ram, and a Universal Processor 50 concrete crusher. Parapet concrete was also removed with a hoe ram and a concrete crusher. A seventh test section served as an undisturbed control. Four tests of concrete samples taken adjacent to the exterior beams and approximately 4 ft (1.2 m) from the beams did not indicate that the concrete was damaged by any of the removal methods. The tests involved (1) determining the compressive strength of cores, (2) determining the tensile bond pullout strength of transverse bars in cores, (3) determining the permeability to chloride ion of cores, and (4) microscopically examining specimens to determine if the bond between the concrete and the reinforcing bar was damaged. Compared to the use of the 30-lb hammer, the use of the hoe ram and crusher to remove the deck and parapet concrete provided a reduction in time of 94 percent and a reduction in cost of 59 and 58 percent, respectively. In view of the much higher efficiency and lower cost associated with highly mechanized techniques of concrete removal, the Virginia Department of Transportation should employ the use of alternatives to the 30-lb hammer more frequently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective maintenance of bridge structures comprises a broad spectrum of plans for repairs and services implemented to enable bridges to perform their intended function. These include in-depth inspection, fatigue analysis, design of mitigation measures and construction to avert component deterioration. Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. The book is aimed at bridge engineers.
