This book was released on 1993-03-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapidly growing area, remote sensing is crucial to the effort of modeling the earth's atmosphere and collecting such fundamental data as temperature, winds, pressures, water vapor distribution, clouds and other active constituents. This information enables us to test existing models of the atmosphere's energy balance, depletion of the ozone layer, climatic trends and other essential environmental data. Also discussed is the application of microwave remote sensing techniques to the atmospheres of planets other than the earth.
Book Synopsis Radiometric Techniques for Observing the Atmosphere from Aircraft by : William Lee Smith
Download or read book Radiometric Techniques for Observing the Atmosphere from Aircraft written by William Lee Smith and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiometric observations have been made from aircraft with spacecraft prototype instruments to test satellite remote sensing techniques. At the same time these observations have been used to study the problem of remote sensing from aircraft because of its own particular value in providing data in the support of sub-synoptic scale meteorological experiments such as the forthcoming GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment. This paper describes aircraft radiometric methods of obtaining clear column radiances, vertical temperature profiles, total precipitable water, and cloud heights and amounts. Questions regarding vertical resolution and accuracy specification as a function of aircraft altitudes are answered. Results obtained using observations made during June 1970 with prototype versions of the Nimbus-E ITPR aboard the NASA CV-990 are presented and discussed. It is concluded that multi-spectral radiometers aboard an aircraft can be effective meteorological observing tools.

Book Synopsis Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface and Atmosphere by : Paulo Pampaloni
Download or read book Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface and Atmosphere written by Paulo Pampaloni and published by VSP. This book was released on 2000-02 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6 Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment held in Florence, Italy on March 15-18, 1999. Over the last two decades, passive microwave remote sensing has made considerable progress, and has achieved significant results in the study of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Many years of observations with ground-based and satellite-borne sensors have made an important contribution to improving our knowledge of many geophysical processes of the Earth's environment and of global changes. The evolution in microwave radiometers aboard satellites has increased steadily over recent years. At the same time, many investigations have been carried out both to improve the algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical parameters and to develop new technologies. The book is divided into four main sections: three of these are devoted to the observation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, and the fourth, to future missions and new technologies. The first section deals with the study of sea and land surfaces, and reports recent advances in remote sensing of ocean wind, sea ice, soil moisture and vegetation biomass, including electromagnetic modelling and the assimilation of radiometric data in models of land surface processes. The following two sections are devoted to the measurement of atmospheric quantities which are of fundamental importance in climatology and meteorology, and, since they influence radio-wave propagation, they also impact on several other fields, including geodesy, navigational satellite and radioastronomy. The last section presents an overview of new technologies and plans for future missions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state-of-the-art of optical remote sensing applied for the generation of marine climate-quality data products, with contributions by international experts in the field. The chapters are logically grouped into six thematic parts, each introduced by a brief overview. The different parts include: i. requirements for the generation of climate data records from satellite ocean measurements and additionally basic radiometry principles addressing terminology, standards, measurement equation and uncertainties; ii. satellite visible and thermal infrared radiometry embracing instrument design, characterization and, pre- and post-launch calibration; iii. in situ visible and thermal infrared radiometry including overviews on basic principles, technology and measurements methods required to support satellite missions devoted to climate change investigations; iv. simulations as fundamental tools to support interpretation and analysis of both in situ and satellite radiometric measurements; v. strategies for in situ radiometry to satisfy mission requirements for the generation of climate data records; and finally, vi. methods for the assessment of satellite data products. Fundamentals of measurement theory are taken through to implementation of practical ground based radiometers and their application to validate satellite data used to generate climate data records. This book presents practical solutions for those involved or contemplating the validation of optical climate measurements from satellite instruments. Exhaustive coverage of important topics Fundamental and advanced discussions of many types of instruments Emphasis on calibration and uncertainty analysis of results

Book Synopsis Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurement by : Dwayne Heard
Download or read book Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurement written by Dwayne Heard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all of the breakthroughs in understanding the atmospherehave been initiated by field observations, using a range ofinstrumental techniques. Developing or deploying instruments tomake further observations demands a thorough understanding of thechemical and spectroscopic principles on which such measurementsdepend. Written as an authoritative guide to the techniques of instrumentalmeasurement for the atmospheric scientist, research student orundergraduate, Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurementfocuses on the instruments used to make real time measurements ofatmospheric gas and aerosol composition. Topics covered include howthey work, their strengths and weaknesses for a particular task, the platforms on which they have been deployed and how they arecalibrated. It explains the fundamental principles upon which theinstrumental techniques are based (ie what property of a moleculecan be exploited to enable its detection), what limits instrumentalsensitivity and accuracy, and the information that can be gainedfrom their use.
Book Synopsis Solar and Terrestrial Radiation by : Kinsell Coulson
Download or read book Solar and Terrestrial Radiation written by Kinsell Coulson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar and Terrestrial Radiation: Methods and Measurements basically summarizes instruments used in routine measurements of solar and terrestrial radiation at the earth’s surface. Because of developments in this field, these certain instruments are sufficiently relevant for meteorological and climatological purposes. Although the emphasis of the book is on the radiation instrumentation, basic theory is still covered and discussed for the purpose of understanding basic radiative processes in the atmosphere. The featured instruments in this book show that if used properly, these instruments can eliminate certain deficiencies in climatological data and routine monitoring of the radiative regime of the surface and lower atmosphere. However, the scope of the study is limited in which they cannot be of use in terms of being precise in studies of climatic change, spectral distribution of atmospheric radiation, and other specific meteorological and technological requirements. This book is designed to be of valuable use to meteorologists, climatologists, and physicists. Students, specifically graduate students, can also make use of the book as well.
