Book excerpt: Energy demands throughout the globe has been increasing and the detrimental effects of carbon emissions on the environment by use of non-renewable resources has impacted life on the planet. The changing climate has caused an increase in natural calamities all over the globe. Many countries in the world have started to produce power using renewable resources like solar, biomass, wind energy, nuclear energy and green fuels. Though there are several technologies for power generation using the above sources, efficient design of these systems still needs lot of research. Mathematical modeling would play a vital role in design of state of the art technologies. Advanced nuclear power plants need special mention since they involve naturally driven safety systems where the complex phenomena of boiling, condensation and thermal stratification take place. These are difficult to model as there is more than one phase coupled with turbulence models, near wall phenomena, coalescence and break up, etc. Scaling up of such systems and their innovative design to reduce stratification requires the help of mathematical modeling. Other opportunities include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling for design of wind turbines for power generation using wind energy. Power generation from biomass involves use of gasifiers which has complex set of reactions and mostly two or three phases which are difficult to model using CFD at industrial scales.

Book excerpt: This work describes the application of palladium-based composite membrane reactors (MRs) for performing steam methane reforming (SMR) and natural gas steam reforming reactions to produce a high-purity hydrogen stream for CO2 capture from the transportation sector. In particular, the effect of different operating conditions on the performance of several MRs has been investigated. Moreover, thin pure palladium and palladium-gold alloy membranes have been synthesized via electroless plating and housed in the membrane module for reaction and permeation testing. In particular, the SMR reaction across porous stainless steel-supported Pd membranes has been investigated with a focus on low temperature and pressure conditions to showcase the ability of the MR to obtain high conversions even at mild conditions. The feed composition ratio, i.e., H2O/CH4, was kept above the stoichiometric limit to enhance conversion, while a permeate sweep gas was used to promote the permeation of hydrogen through the membrane. This application of the Pd-based MR resulted in high methane conversion (84%) and hydrogen recovery (82%) with a pure hydrogen stream obtained from the permeate side at temperatures as low as 400 °C. Stable methane conversions and hydrogen permeation rates were obtained for> 700 reaction hours. Using a Pd-Au composite MR, further reaction testing took place with a real natural gas feed at 450 °C and 300 kPa. This MR operated under a SMR reaction continuously for> 250 hours without a decrease in performance, highlighting the long-term stability of the MR to produce pure hydrogen for long periods of time. More specifically, the conversion of higher hydrocarbons, e.g., propane, ethane, and butane, within the reactor were> 85% throughout the experimental tests. Using a membrane module comprised of a dense Pd77Ag23 membrane, hydrogen permeation decreased when exposed to H2S. This decrease in hydrogen flux was temporary and complete recovery was realized with 200 ppm and 40 ppm H2S exposure tests showing no long-term effects on the membrane. These results allow for an alternative use of pure Pd membranes, which are irreversibly poisoned by H2S.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A mathematical modeling framework for the methane steam reforming reaction operating in steady state has been developed. Performances are compared between the classic catalytic packed bed reactor and a Pd-based catalytic membrane reactor. Isothermal simulations on MATLAB © has first been conducted and show a higher performance of the membrane reactor over the packed bed reactor. Methane conversion of 1 can be reached for lower temperatures than used with industrial PBR, and better performances are shown for an increase in the operating pressure. Optimum conditions were defined for Temperature (500-600 Celsius), reaction side pressure (16-40 bars), membrane thickness (1-7 micrometers), steam/methane ratio (3-4), reactor length (5-10 meters) and permeate sweep ratio (20 or more). This model was validated by multiple recognized sources. Adiabatic simulations were conducted in order to develop a mathematical model base for non-isothermal simulations. The membrane reactor is again showing a higher conversion of methane compared to the packed bed reactor, however the heat loss due to the membrane and the hydrogen leaving through the tube is decreasing the performances of the MR over the PBR compared to the isothermal case. Results show also that most of the reaction occurs at the very beginning of the reactor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional, pseudo-homogeneous membrane-reactor model was developed to investigate the steam-methane reforming (SMR) reactions in a Pd-based membrane reactor. Radial diffusion was taken into consideration to account for the concentration gradient in the radial direction due to hydrogen permeation through the membrane. With appropriate reaction rate expressions, a set of partial differential equations was derived using the continuity equation for the reaction system. The equations were solved by finite difference method. The solution of the model equations is complicated by the coupled reactions. At the inlet, if there is no hydrogen, rate expressions become singular. To overcome this problem, the first element of the reactor was treated as a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Several alternative numerical schemes were implemented in the solution algorithm to get a converaged, stable solution. The model was also capable of handling steam-methane reforming reactions under non-membrane condition and equilibrium reaction conversions. Numerical results of these three models show that conversions in the membrane reactor are always higher than that of the non-membrane tubular reactor. In a membrane reactor higher conversions or yields can be achieved, which is greater than the thermodynamic equilibrium conversions or yields. For example, at 873 K, 5 atm, 2.8 x 10−3 mol/s methane feed rate, 3.0 steam to methane molar ratio and 4 gm Ni-catalyst loading, the yield of the membrane reactor is about 208.5%, while the conventional non-membrane reactor yield is about 93.7%. The corresponding equilibrium yield is about 135.9%. The effects of temperature, pressure, steam to methane molar ratio in the feed, space time and sweep gas flow rate on conversions and yields were investigated parametrically for a wide range of operating conditions. Contour plots for partial pressure of reaction side major components are also reported.

Book excerpt: Palladium (Pd)-based membranes have received a great deal of attention from both academia and industry thanks to their ability to selectively separate hydrogen from gas streams. The integration of such membranes with appropriate catalysts in membrane reactors allows for hydrogen production with CO2 capture that can be applied in smaller bioenergy or combined heat and power (CHP) plants, as well as in large-scale power plants. Pd-based membranes are therefore regarded as a Key Enabling Technology (KET) to facilitate the transition towards a knowledge-based, low-carbon, and resource-efficient economy. This Special Issue of the journal Membranes on “Pd-based Membranes: Overview and Perspectives” contains nine peer-reviewed articles. Topics include manufacturing techniques, understanding of material phenomena, module and reactor design, novel applications, and demonstration efforts and industrial exploitation.

Membrane Reactors for Hydrogen Production Processes starts with an overview of membrane integration in the chemical reaction environment, formulating the thermodynamics and kinetics of membrane reactors and assessing the performance of different process architectures. Then, the state of the art of hydrogen selective membranes, membrane manufacturing processes and the mathematical modeling of membrane reactors are discussed. A review of the most useful applications from an industrial point of view is given. These applications include: natural gas steam reforming, autothermal reforming, water gas shift reaction, decomposition of hydrogen sulphide, and alkanes dehydrogenation. The final part is dedicated to the description of a pilot plant where the novel configuration was implemented at a semi-industrial scale. Plant engineers, researchers and postgraduate students will find Membrane Reactors for Hydrogen Production Processes a comprehensive guide to the state of the art of membrane reactor technology.
