Book Synopsis Is Jesus of Nazareth the Predicted Messiah? by : Douglas D. Scott
Download or read book Is Jesus of Nazareth the Predicted Messiah? written by Douglas D. Scott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians in general—and preachers of prophecy in particular—attribute the fulfillment of hundreds of Old Testament messianic prophecies to Jesus of Nazareth. Often these claims arise in the uncritical environment of Christian churches or popular literature that is treating messianic prophecy. People with critical thinking abilities, and those endowed with a skeptical nature, often have key questions that remain unaddressed in such environments. These thinkers and skeptics are the people that will be most interested in this work. The primary question addressed is this: “Do critically acceptable historical-evidential reasons exist for believing that Jesus Christ is the direct fulfillment of some specific Old Testament messianic texts?” Approaching this question within a framework that eliminates any possibility of staged prophetic fulfillment, and those that may occur by mere chance or collusion, produces results that must be taken seriously. Even with these strict criteria, Jesus emerges as the only viable candidate to fulfill some of the prophecies included in this study. For other prophetic texts, the evidence is not as abundant or convincing. However, even these texts yield several minimal facts that directly impinge on New Testament claims about Jesus.

Book Synopsis Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament by : Gerard Van Groningen
Download or read book Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament written by Gerard Van Groningen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1997-07-16 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books by evangelical scholars on messianism in the Old Testament are either outdated, too brief, or lack balance,Ó observes the author. Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament represents the most thorough, conservative analysis of the century. Van Groningen traces the messianic expectation as it is progressively revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. He first introduces the messianic concept, defining its terms and uncovering its source. He finds these messianic presentations rooted in, and shaped by, divine revelation. The major part of this volume explores messianism's philological, historical, and theological aspects. The result of this study,Ó writes the author, reveals that the messianic concept refers to a royal-priestly-prophetic person...and his work.Ó Passages that deal with these messianic motifs have been selected for close scrutiny and evaluation.Ó The author believes that a correct understanding of messianism in the Old Testament requires a balanced hermeneutical approach - from exegeting the relevant texts and studying their historical context to interpreting prophecy and organizing its theological truths. In the words of the author, To omit one [element] is to do injustice to the Old Testament.Ó Van Groningen has included an extensive bibliography of both books and articles for those wishing to pursue additional study. A Scripture index helps one to locate the author's exegetical insights on various passages. An index of persons concludes the work.

Book Synopsis Recovering the Unity of the Bible by : Walter C. Kaiser, Jr.
Download or read book Recovering the Unity of the Bible written by Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book Walt Kaiser makes the case for the unity of the Bible. The theological unity of the Bible celebrates the diversity of the Bible, but does so with the conviction that even though that unity can be tested historically, ethically, and otherwise, it has not detracted from the central case for the theological harmony that is found in the text. This has been the general conclusion of two millennia of Judo-Christian exegesis.
