Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A professor for almost 50 years in Rice University’s Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics, nationally acclaimed scholar Richard Tapia is struck by the number of Chinese students in the hallways and wonders how the United States can remain globally competitive. Tapia asserts it is critical to the nation’s health and well-being to improve the representation of “the precious few,” or domestic minority groups, in STEM education and careers. African Americans and Latinos alone make up 31% of the population, and he writes the country cannot maintain its economic and scientific health when such a large part of the population is left out of science and engineering. In addition, he contends the United States will not have racial justice without educational justice. Underrepresented groups must have equal access to higher education. This thought-provoking book examines issues that contribute to the lack of minorities in graduate STEM programs, including a dependence on standardized tests, deficiencies in K-12 education and historic and ongoing racism. As a long-time mentor, he has seen first-hand that professors have lower expectations of these students. In a survey of Rice University faculty, only 6% agreed that underrepresented minorities have talent in the field of study. Unfortunately, professors often interpret poor performance for lack of ability, despite the undoubtable fact that most of these students have not had the same quality education as their Anglo peers and are therefore not as well prepared. Providing a road map to increase the representation of domestic minority learners in academia and STEM fields, this is a must-read for university administrators and professors who want to attract and retain a diverse student body. In addition, Tapia includes advice for students, their parents and teachers, who will also benefit from his wisdom and years of experience serving as a mentor to those from diverse backgrounds.

Book excerpt: Drawing on the author’s extensive experience training mentors, The Mentor’s Way outlines eight rules for engaging in a mentoring relationship. Nemanick examines the ways in which mentoring differs from managing or leading, and details the various roles of the mentor as a role model, motivator, confidant, coach, and more. Readers will learn how to develop successfully in each of these roles while helping a protégé to develop his or her own skills. Clear and elegant chapters, each prefaced with a real-world example, emphasize to readers that their role as a mentor lies in listening and responding to a protégé’s individual strengths and needs. Special attention is paid to creating a safe space, displaying empathy, and fielding a protégé’s questions while knowing what to ask as a mentor. The author takes the anxiety out of the mentorship journey, accompanying practical insight with chapter exercises that are designed to help readers use their own experiences to identify best practice. Suggested topics for difficult mentor/protégé conversations allow readers to facilitate a stronger, more open relationship with their protégé. This practical guide will provide mentors with the toolkit they need to get the most out of a relationship with their protégés.

Book excerpt: Everyday Extraordinary is a follow up to My Saturday Morning Posts, the compilation of a weekly journal posted on social media that followed Penny Sparks’ first year of grief after the unexpected loss of her husband. Through this format, her healing process developed into a continued walk through the “more” that everyday life can bring. So often we can see God clearly in crisis, turning points or big decisions, but what about the routines in our average days? He promises we will see and do more if we engage Him in the middle-of-the-road moments. This collection of thoughts is divided into four seasons in recognition of how we can feel differently and more deeply at different times of the year. Penny uses her everyday moments to share extraordinary lessons about the goodness of God. These stories will inspire you to see God in the seemingly insignificant stuff and show you how He doesn’t just work in the earthquakes of life, but in the gentle whispers as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive guide to helping mentors and mentees bridge gaps between and among cultures—a growing issue in today's diverse workplace—is coauthored by the founder and CEO of the Center for Mentoring Excellence. As the workplace has become more diverse, mentoring has become more challenging. Mentors and mentees may come from very different backgrounds and have limited understanding of each other's cultures and outlooks. But mentoring remains the most powerful tool for creating meaningful relationships, furthering professional development, and increasing engagement and retention. Younger workers and emerging leaders in particular are demanding it. Lisa Z. Fain and Lois J. Zachary offer a timely, evidence-based, practical guide for helping mentors develop the level of cultural competency needed to bridge differences. Firmly rooted in Zachary's well-known four-part mentoring model, the book uses three fictional scenarios featuring three pairs of diverse mentors and mentees to illustrate how key concepts can play out in real life. It offers an array of accessible tools and strategies designed to help you increase your self-awareness and prepare you to embrace and leverage differences in your mentoring relationships. But beyond tips and techniques, Fain and Zachary emphasize that authenticity is the key—the ultimate purpose of this book is to help the mentor and mentee make a genuine connection and learn from each other. That's when the magic really happens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investing in your returning talent Becoming a parent is life-changing. Our experience as employers, practitioners, researchers and working parents tells us this is a critical time for offering support to new parents as they navigate the transition, plan for their return and re-engage with work and career. At an organisational level, there are huge costs associated with losing experienced and talented employees when they start a family and, in the interest of building a more diverse and balanced workforce, organisations need their people to return engaged and motivated to progress their career. Written in partnership by two established coaching and mentoring professionals, Mentoring New Parents at Work makes the case for dedicated mentoring programmes in the workplace as a sustainable way of supporting new parents and improving talent retention for employers. The authors offer timely, practical guidance for each stage of the mentoring journey, from building the business case through to ideas for mentoring workshops. The book is grounded in theory and practice, and provides tools, techniques and real life case studies from a range of countries and organisations to illustrate good practice. Mentoring New Parents at Work will be invaluable to all HR practitioners and line managers who want to retain and support new parents, helping to pave the way for gender diversity at all levels of their organisations. Its themes and insights will also be of interest to students and researchers of HRM, diversity management, and coaching and mentoring.
