Book excerpt: Interventions and Policies to Enhance Wellbeing Wellbeing: A Complete Reference Guide is the first multivolume, interdisciplinary exploration of the topic of wellbeing. The notion of wellbeing has grown in importance and prominence across the globe in recent years and this reference work provides an in-depth examination of the characteristics that enable individuals and organizations to thrive and flourish. Under the direction of noted academic Cary Cooper, and edited by a distinguished group of senior scholars from a variety of disciplines, this project looks at wellbeing from multiple perspectives, including children and families; the environment; the workplace; later life; economics; and interventions and public policy. Spanning the social sciences and encompassing the latest research, this is an essential reference for scholars, students, professionals, and policy makers who want to enhance and promote human wellbeing. Interventions and Policies to Enhance Wellbeing looks at the most successful existing strategies to promote wellbeing and mental health. It examines the latest research in the science of wellbeing and discusses the practical implications for improved learning, creativity, productivity, relationships, and health. The first two sections cover interventions for individuals across the lifespan, as well as those for organizations and communities. The final section looks specifically at policy initiatives and approaches, with a focus on the integration of new technology and the role of the media. In this multidisciplinary volume, a cadre of global scholars considers a wealth of new research and outlines the potential impact on future policy and the wellbeing of society at large. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past century there has been awareness of the importance of a global public health perspective in understanding the etiology, course and treatment of mental disorders. However, just recently there has been a focus on population science and with it an evidence-based call to improving public mental health in communities. Mental Health in Public Health synthesizes important topics in public health psychiatry that were discussed at the American Psychopathological Association (APPA) meeting in 2010. The book, like the APPA meeting, aims to bring advanced knowledge of the social and environmental risk factors for psychiatric disorders, as well as ideas for preventing them. Chapters are written by experts from around the world and include such public health concerns as Veteran's mental health, mental health disparities among minorities, causes of addictions, and mortality of these disorders.

Book excerpt: Mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders are highly prevalent, accounting for a substantial burden of disease and disability globally. In order to bridge the gap between available resources and the significant need for services, the World Health Organization launched the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). The objective of mhGAP is to scale-up care and services using evidence-based interventions for prevention and management of priority MNS conditions. The mhGAP Intervention Guide version 1.0 for MNS disorders for non-specialist health settings was developed in 2010 as a simple technical tool to allow for integrated management of priority MNS conditions using protocols for clinical decision-making. With uptake in over 90 countries, mhGAP-IG 1.0 version has had widespread success. It is our pleasure to present mhGAP version 2.0, with updates incorporating new evidence-based guidance, enhanced usability, and new sections to expand its use by both health care providers as well as programme managers. It is our hope that this guide will continue to provide the road-map to deliver care and services for people with MNS disorders around the world and lead us closer to achieving the goal of universal health coverage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prevention of mental illness and mental health promotion have often been ignored in the past, both in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Recently, however, there has been a clear shift towards public mental health, as a result of increasing scientific evidence that both these actions have a serious potential to reduce the onset of illness and subsequent burden as a result of mental illness and related social, economic and political costs. A clear distinction between prevention of mental illness and mental health promotion is critical. Selective prevention, both at societal and individual level, is an important way forward. The Oxford Textbook of Public Mental Health brings together the increasing interest in public mental health and the growing emphasis on the prevention of mental ill health and promotion of well-being into a single comprehensive textbook. Comprising international experiences of mental health promotion and mental well-being, chapters are supplemented with practical examples and illustrations to provide the most relevant information succinctly. This book will serve as an essential resource for mental and public health professionals, as well as for commissioners of services, nurses and community health visitors.
