Four companies, D, G, H and K had assembled at Loachapoka where they were to have been organized into the 34th Regiment. Disagreement between organizing officers resulted in these units being withdrawn to Auburn where they were formed into the 45th. Though sister units the 45th and 34th only fought one battle together, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where they were together side by side. Placed in the brigade of Gen. Wood of Lauderdale, Cleburne's division, (with the Sixteenth, Twenty-sixth, Fiftieth, and Thirty-third Alabama), the Forty-fifth remained on duty with the Army of Tennessee, passing the first half of the year 1863 at Tullahoma. It fought under the eye of Cleburne at Chickamauga, and its mutilated ranks told the eloquent story of its services. Gen. Mark Lowery of Mississippi succeeded to the command of the brigade, and the Forty-fifth was present at Missionary Ridge and Ringgold Gap with slight loss. The winter was passed at Dalton, and the regiment took a full share in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign, especially at Resaca, and at New Hope, where Cleburne's division grappled with Logan's corps. On the 22nd of July, at Atlanta, death reveled in its ranks, and half the regiment went down on the hard-fought field. Six weeks later it again fought " where Cleburne crossed the line" at Jonesboro, with considerable loss. Then followed the long and disastrous march into Tennessee. The Forty-fifth opened the battle at Franklin the evening before by a brilliant fight at Springhill, and the next day was in the bloody and desperate assault of Cleburne's division on the enemy's works, and was almost annihilated around the corpse of its heroic division commander. Its colors floated before Nashville, and a remnant of the Fort-fifth moved into North Carolina. It was there consolidated with other Alabama regiments, and surrendered with Gen Johnston's forces. Book excerpt: On 16 May 1862, 904 soldiers formed ranks for the first time and unfurled the virgin colors of the 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. These 904 soldiers were a mixture of veterans, volunteers, conscripts, and substitutes. The regiment participated in nine western theater battles and their associated campaigns. These campaigns included Corinth, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and Bentonville. Not one battle was a victory but the heat of battle forged a band of brothers tempered with time. The regiment cased its colors for the last time on 9 April 1865 in a desolate North Carolina field; only ninety-eight soldiers remained at the end of this bloody national struggle. This thesis will identify the timeless factors of cohesion within the 42nd Alabama. This thesis will further determine the most prominent of these factors, specifically within the remaining ninety eight soldiers. Finally, this thesis will explore the value of cohesion to the current military force. This thesis incorporated sources from the The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Confederate Veteran, The Southern Historical Papers, personal diaries and letters, census records, compiled service records, sources from the Alabama State Archives and the National Park Service. After the examination of numerous factors, to include discipline, leadership, and morale, the common factor that held the core members of the unit together until the end was the “original volunteer” soldiers of 1861. These soldiers formed the cohesive bond of the unit by instilling a common conviction and devotion to duty within the 42nd Alabama. The final analysis reinforces the value of the volunteer soldier and the worth of an “all-volunteer” force.

The unit was ordered to Knoxville, TN, then Kentucky where it fought at Fishing Creek (lost 64 men) under General Felix Zollicoffer. Later it was assigned to General Sterling Wood's regiment (with the 33rd AL, 44th TN, and 32nd and 33rd MS regiments). It lost 162 men at the battle of Shiloh. From Dalton to Atlanta the Sixteenth bore an honorable share in the retrograde movement of the Western Army, fighting by day and entrenching by night, and its casualties were 200 in number. At Jonesboro, the Sixteenth lost about 150 of its men, and was an actor in the other scenes of the fearful drama around Atlanta. At Chickamauga the 16th was in Cleburne's division. Its loss was 244 killed and wounded of the 414 engaged. From the disaster at Missionary Ridge the Sixteenth retired and wintered at Dalton. It moved with Hood into Tennessee and fought at Franklin and Nashville losing half its remaining force, and every commissioned officer. A remnant followed the march of the army into the Carolinas, and surrendered at Goldsboro, about 50 men being present. It had been consolidated with the 1st and 45th Alabama regiments. Book excerpt: The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in General Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. General Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded General Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. After Corinth the 37th was placed into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, General John C. Moore commanding. The 37th lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where General Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties out of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then moved into North Carolina. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally. . The unit(s) surrendered on 26 April 1865 at Durham Station, Orange County, NC. " . . .Let me say of the fruitless struggle made by the Thirty-Seventh Alabama Regiment . . . There is some confusion regarding the origin of the regiment. Some accounts show the 29th was created by the addition of two companies to the Fourth Alabama Battalion - a body of eight companies, which had been organized the autumn before at Montgomery. The 29th remained at Pensacola until it was evacuated, suffering much from diseases that usually afflict raw troops. It then lay between Pollard and Pensacola for over a year, when it was ordered to Mobile. The regiment was there from July 1863 to April 1864, except for a short time that it was at Pollard. The regiment joined the Army of Tennessee at Resaca with over 1,000 men, in time to initiate the Atlanta-Dalton campaign. It was brigaded with the 1st, 17th, and 26th Alabama, and 37th Mississippi regiments, commanded at different intervals by Col. Murphey of Montgomery, General O'Neal of Lauderdale, and General Shelley of Talladega. Book excerpt: The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865.
