Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners, of Modern China The pictures of Chinese life that are given in the pages of this work have been drawn from my own personal experience. I have lived in China for fifty years, and have mingled with almost every class in it. TO do this has been a source of great pleasure to me. The more I got into the inner life Of the Chinese the more did I feel my heart drawn to them. They are really a very lovable people, and when seen in their happiest moods, or when sorrow has been clouding their lives, or when aroused by some sense of injustice, they prove that they really possess the fibre Of a great people. Some foreign visitors to China have complained that the Chinese have no original genius and that they have failed in the power of development. The real reason for any halting in the progress of thought is the Dead Hand of the past that has gripped the nation for so many long centuries. I have seen a banyan-tree with wide-spreading boughs that on a summers day could shelter a hundred people sitting beneath them so that the suns rays should not reach them. I have also seen another of the same kind in a small flower-pot, with branches so entwined and interwoven amongst each other that all growth had been effectually stopped. This is an emblem of the Chinese nation. But the fatal hand is being unloosed and its shadowy, spidery fingers are slowly dissolving into thin air. Erelong Nature will avenge herself for the wrong that has been done by a new creation of energy. The Chinese are a strong race. Two great deeds in their history prove this. By the in ferior I mean the younger, the less important, or of lower rank. Suppose one of the two to be a familiar friend, and another a comparatively new acquaintance, then formality requires that the familiar friend shall be introduced to the other, being named first. The reason for this is that one naturally stands more on ceremony with the man one knows least. There may be counteracting circumstances, however, which would tend to reverse this order of things, but as a general rule, the social rank of both being equal, the above holds good. Never introduce a lady to a gentle man; but always the gentleman to the lady. That is, mention the man's name first, addressing yourself to the woman thus: Allow me to introduce my friend Mr. Smith, Miss Jones. And follow this up immediately by saying, Miss Jones, addressing Mr. Smith as you 'do so. It is a grave solecism to begin by intro ducing the lady. Tyros very naturally conclude that the lady's name should be first mentioned; but on thinking it over they will soon perceive that to do so would infer that she is the lesser consideration of the two. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Table-Talk Original Essays on Men and Manners, Edited by His Son, Vol. 1 Tan present Volume contains, in addition to matter published in the former editions of Table Talk, ' an Essay, now for the first time printed, and another now for the first time collected. The former, the Essay On Travelling Abroad, ' I found amongst other manuscripts of my father's, most of them merely the copy whence Table Talk' and other works of his were printed, and I at first concluded that this also had been used. A diligent search, however: not merely through all the collected volumes of his works, but through all the various publications to which he contributed, regularly or occasionally, in which search I have been aided by the keen eye of my friend Mr Raymond Yates, Whose earnest de votion to the author has rendered this and other cooperation, for which I stand indebted to him, truly a labour of love, I have no hesitation in announcing the Essay in question to be entirely new. It is, to say the truth, somewhat fragmentary, and would. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction for Chinese Women and Girls How little is known, save by a very few, of her reverence for parents, age, letters, and law; of her teachers, schools, colleges, literary Chancellors and degrees; and that it is true in that great empire that the humblest may rise to be second only to the emperor if he has the ability. A literary aristocracy leads all others; indeed, leaves no place for any other, and it is far more to have a literary degree than to be a millionaire. Twice six hundred years has China's famed Hanlin Academy existed and been the Mecca ofher aspiring scholars. Of what other countries can we find reliable dynastic histories of thousands of years, books on morals and etiquette, visiting cards, en velopes, tinted and decorated note paper, the very tint of the paper conveying sen timents of regard, and these not modern luxuries, but ancient, and in common use when our ancestors were such gross bar barians as no record proves the Chinese to have ever been? The better I know this wonderful people, and the more I study their history, the greater my aston ishment that such a Civilization can exist parallel with such degradation and super stition of the masses. This is doubtless due to the exception ally wise and good men they have had as teachers, notably Confucius and Mencius, whose instructions concerning all the re lations of man to man are known and quoted from the highest down to the poorest Classes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wandering in Northern China At home there are numbers of young men, five or ten years out of college, who can tell you just what is the matter with the world, and exactly how to remedy it. I am more or less ready to agree with them that the world is going to the dogs. What of it? You have only to step outdoors on any clear night to see that there are hundreds of other worlds, which may be arranging their lives in a more intelligent manner. The most striking thing about these young political and sociological geniuses sitting in their suburban gardens or their city flats is that while they can toss off a recipe guaranteed to cure our own sick world overnight, if only some one can get it down its throat, they seldom seem to have influence enough in their own cozy little corner of it to drive out one grafting ward-heeler. In other words, if you must know what is to be the future of China, I regret that I have not been vouchsafed the gift of prophecy and cannot tell you. In the minor matter of Chinese words and names, I have deliberately not tried to follow the usual Romanization, but rather to cause the reader to pronounce them as nearly like what they are on the spot as is possible with our mere twenty-six letters. Of course I could not follow this rule entirely or I must have called the capital of China Bay-jing, have spoken of the evacuation of Shahn - doong, and so on; so that in the case of names already more or less familiar to the West I have used the most modern and most widely accepted forms, as they have survived on the ground. At that I cannot imagine what ailed the men who Romanized the Chinese language, but that is another story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first detailed treatment of the Chinese homosexual tradition in any Western language, Passions of the Cut Sleeve shatters preconceptions and stereotypes. Gone is the image of the sternly puritanical Confucian as sole representative of Chinese sexual practices—and with it the justification for the modern Chinese insistence that homosexuality is a recent import from the decadent West. Rediscovering the male homosexual tradition in China provides a startling new perspective on Chinese society and adds richly to our understanding of homosexuality. Bret Hinsch's reconstruction of the Chinese homosexual past reveals unexpected scenes. An emperor on his deathbed turns over the seals of the empire to a male beloved; two men marry each other with elaborate wedding rituals; parents sell their son into prostitution. The tradition portrays men from all levels of society—emperors, transvestite actors, rapists, elegant scholars, licentious monks, and even the nameless poor. Drawing from dynastic histories, erotic novels, popular Buddhist tracts, love poetry, legal cases, and joke books, Passions of the Cut Sleeve evokes the complex and fascinating male homosexual tradition in China from the Bronze Age until its decline in recent times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beloved, internationally bestselling author of Wild Swans, and co-author of the bestselling Mao: The Unknown Story, the dramatic, epic biography of the unusual woman who ruled China for 50 years, from concubine to Empress, overturning centuries of traditions and formalities to bring China into the modern world. A woman, an Empress of immense wealth who was largely a prisoner within the compound walls of her palaces, a mother, a ruthless enemy, and a brilliant strategist: Chang makes a compelling case that Cixi was one of the most formidable and enlightened rulers of any nation. Cixi led an intense and singular life. Chosen at the age of 12 to be a concubine by the Emperor Xianfeng, she gave birth to his only male heir who at four was designated Emperor when his father died in 1861. In a brilliant move, the young woman enlisted the help of the Emperor's widow and the two women orchestrated a coup that ousted the regents and made Cixi sole Regent. Untrained and untaught, the two studied history and politics together, ruling the huge nation from behind a curtain. When her boy died, Cixi designated a young nephew as Emperor, continuing her reign till her death in 1908. Chang gives us a complex, riveting portrait of Cixi through a reign as long as that of her fellow Empress, Victoria, whom she longed to meet: her ruthlessness in fighting off rivals; her curiosity to learn; her reliance on Westerners who she placed in key positions; and her sensitivity and desire to preserve the distinctiveness of China's past while overturning traditions (she, as Chang reveals--not Mao, as he claimed--banned footbinding) and exposing its culture to western ideas and technology.
