This book was released on 2002 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of graphics hardware is currently undergoing a major change with the introduction of geometry engines on relatively inexpensive single chip ASICs which now contain the complete graphics rendering pipeline in full custom hardware. While the highest performance in measured in frames per second is theultimate criteria for judging these chips, the focus is now starting to shift towards new features and different rendering techniques and pipelines. This dissertation introduces new hardware architectures for more realistic surface rendering of three dimensional objects and the rendering of volumetric datasets. Surface rendering is dealt with in the first part of the dissertation where the architectures for displacement map rendering in hardware are proposed. This work represents the first to appear in scientific literature on displacement map hardware rendering. Where possible these architectures propose components that integrate into currently available pipelines and make use of existing units in those pipelines. Displacement map rendering in hardware is a desired feature currently under development by most graphics hardware vendors. The first architecture is scan-line based and works just before rasterization and the second adaptively retessellates a triangle mesh using additional hardware on either side of the geometry transformation stage in the graphics pipeline. The VIZARDII architecture and several hardware based performance improvements for any ray casting architecture are presented in the second part titled Volume Rendering. VIZARDII is an interactve programmable hardware acelerator for Volume Rendering implemented on a PCI Card. The main pipeline is implemented on a Xilinx FPGA allowing new features to be added relatively quickly. A memory interface is presented and discussed with its final implementation appearing in the VIZARDII system. Novel architectures for ray queuing and sorting, sub-cube based space leaping are also presented which improve the performance of ray casting based hardware architectures. Antialiasing that occurs when ray casting volume data is also discussed and possible solutions are presented using multiresolutionvolume datasets.

FODO '93 reflects the maturing of the database field which hasbeen driven by the enormous growth in the range of applications for databasesystems. The "non-standard" applications of the not-so-distant past, such ashypertext, multimedia, and scientific and engineering databases, now provide some of the central motivation for the advances in hardware technology and data organizations and algorithms. The volume contains 3 invited talks, 22 contributed papers, and 2 panel papers. The contributed papers are grouped into parts on multimedia, access methods, text processing, query processing, industrial applications, physical storage, andnew directions.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as a textbook for a second course in the im plementation (Le. microarchitecture) of computer architectures. The subject matter covered is the collection of techniques that are used to achieve the highest performance in single-processor machines; these techniques center the exploitation of low-level parallelism (temporal and spatial) in the processing of machine instructions. The target audience consists students in the final year of an undergraduate program or in the first year of a postgraduate program in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering; professional computer designers will also also find the book useful as an introduction to the topics covered. Typically, the author has used the material presented here as the basis of a full-semester undergraduate course or a half-semester post graduate course, with the other half of the latter devoted to multiple-processor machines. The background assumed of the reader is a good first course in computer architecture and implementation - to the level in, say, Computer Organization and Design, by D. Patterson and H. Hennessy - and familiarity with digital-logic design. The book consists of eight chapters: The first chapter is an introduction to all of the main ideas that the following chapters cover in detail: the topics covered are the main forms of pipelining used in high-performance uniprocessors, a taxonomy of the space of pipelined processors, and performance issues. It is also intended that this chapter should be readable as a brief "stand-alone" survey.

Book excerpt: Space Image Processing covers the design and coding of PC software for processing and manipulating imagery obtained by satellites and other spacecraft. Although the contents relate to several scientific and technological fields, it serves as a programming book, providing readers with essential technical information for developing PC applications. The material focuses on images of the planet and other celestial bodies obtained by orbiting and non-orbiting spacecraft. This book is not about raster graphics in general, but about raster graphics processing as it applies to space imagery. Three parts divide the text: 1. Science - background at an introductory level - scientific principles underlying space imagery and its processing - topics related to space and remote sensing. 2. Technology - topics related to space imagery - geodesy, cartography, image data formats, image processing. 3. Programming - code examples for DOS and Windows programming on the PC - consideration of low-level and C++ code - routines with a tutorial and demonstrative purpose.

Book excerpt: Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface presents the interaction between hardware and software at a variety of levels, which offers a framework for understanding the fundamentals of computing. This book focuses on the concepts that are the basis for computers. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the computer revolution. This text then explains the concepts and algorithms used in modern computer arithmetic. Other chapters consider the abstractions and concepts in memory hierarchies by starting with the simplest possible cache. This book discusses as well the complete data path and control for a processor. The final chapter deals with the exploitation of parallel machines. This book is a valuable resource for students in computer science and engineering. Readers with backgrounds in assembly language and logic design who want to learn how to design a computer or understand how a system works will also find this book useful.

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to the Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontroller. The MSP430 is a 16-bit reduced instruction set (RISC) processor that features ultra low power consumption and integrated digital and analog hardware. Variants of the MSP430 microcontroller have been in production since 1993. This provides for a host of MSP430 products including evaluation boards, compilers, and documentation. A thorough introduction to the MSP430 line of microcontrollers, programming techniques, and interface concepts are provided along with considerable tutorial information with many illustrated examples. Each chapter provides laboratory exercises to apply what has been presented in the chapter. The book is intended for an upper level undergraduate course in microcontrollers or mechatronics but may also be used as a reference for capstone design projects. Also, practicing engineers already familiar with another microcontroller, who require a quick tutorial on the microcontroller, will find this book very useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for undergraduates, An Introduction to High-Performance Scientific Computing assumes a basic knowledge of numerical computation and proficiency in Fortran or C programming and can be used in any science, computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering department or by practicing scientists and engineers, especially those associated with one of the national laboratories or supercomputer centers. This text evolved from a new curriculum in scientific computing that was developed to teach undergraduate science and engineering majors how to use high-performance computing systems (supercomputers) in scientific and engineering applications. Designed for undergraduates, An Introduction to High-Performance Scientific Computing assumes a basic knowledge of numerical computation and proficiency in Fortran or C programming and can be used in any science, computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering department or by practicing scientists and engineers, especially those associated with one of the national laboratories or supercomputer centers. The authors begin with a survey of scientific computing and then provide a review of background (numerical analysis, IEEE arithmetic, Unix, Fortran) and tools (elements of MATLAB, IDL, AVS). Next, full coverage is given to scientific visualization and to the architectures (scientific workstations and vector and parallel supercomputers) and performance evaluation needed to solve large-scale problems. The concluding section on applications includes three problems (molecular dynamics, advection, and computerized tomography) that illustrate the challenge of solving problems on a variety of computer architectures as well as the suitability of a particular architecture to solving a particular problem. Finally, since this can only be a hands-on course with extensive programming and experimentation with a variety of architectures and programming paradigms, the authors have provided a laboratory manual and supporting software via anonymous ftp.
