Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "America, home of the brave and the free" This is a well-deserved description of America, but it hardly describes the complexity of our great nation. Describing America would be like describing a large, moving picture that is constantly changing. Each of its many components is different than all the others. To understand America one would have to understand every individual, in every culture, in every community. To leave out any piece of the big picture would distort America's image and deny the opportunity to know America itself. This book gives the reader a piece of the big picture that represents a bygone era. As a nation, we have made a lot of progress over the years and we can be proud of our accomplishments, but we should remember, our roots are the foundation of our success. Go back in time with the author to relive the old stories just as they happened in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in rural Arkansas. Experience the humor, nostalgia, and the tragedy of a bygone era. Each reader will experience something different, but will come away enlightened having enjoyed these glimpses of a simpler time.

But when he came back he had three kids with him. And those kids didn’t know any thing about being in the mountains, because they had never been here before. As far as that goes they had never been to any mountains before. But they was about to find out what it was really like to be country kids for the first time in their lives. George came back and found them a house and it needed some work on it so he decided to fix it up, and the kids were going to help him. His oldest boy was Charlie and he was ten years old, and he had two girls Mary and Martha. Now Mary she wasn’t too bad for getting into things which she was only eight year old. But now Martha she was something else, she was seven years old and got into anything she could, she makes poor old George a nervous wreck some time, because he never knows where she is at. He depends on Charlie to help him out a lot with Martha, because he has to work around the house trying to get it fixed up for them to live in. Charlie helps him as much as he can. But since he is only ten years old he can only do so much, but he does a good job watching her as much as he can. And believe me she is a hand full some time. Georges wife got killed in a car wreck a couple years before they came back home. So George was trying to get the kids and him self back in order, because they had all kinds of memories their, and he had to get away from that place It was driving him nuts and he needed a change in things, so he thought he would just bring the kids back home where he came from, and that place was Harlan county, Kentucky.

The smell was fresh and invigorating to me as I stood beside the old hickory tree with its new leaves, an iridescent bright green, glowing against the dreary gray sky. I stood quietly and watched a lone eagle soar above, looking for an unsuspecting prey hidden in the overgrown weeds in the long neglected fields. I had stayed away too long, now, I wanted to return to the source of my childhood.

Book excerpt: You may love photography or heritage scrap booking, remembering gentler, less complicated, romantic times. Or you may be a history buff. And, you may enjoy poetry and prose. If you do, you will certainly find a feast of history, poetry and family in these pages. This book celebrates the life of a man who was born a story teller and lived the life of a poet. His poetry and life were one. His family traveled at his side on this incredible journey. All of life's experiences became the stuff out of which his verses emerged and lived. I often traveled with him: I'm his oldest son Calvin, and co-author of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book From a very early age, Thomas E. Barnett and his sister were taught the value of hard work, family, and caring for your neighbors. Living as a young person in the ’60s and ’70s in the Midwest wasn’t easy, but it was always filled with love, laughter, and a sense of community. In his memoir, Barnett shares the peaceful moments of growing up, from Christmas mornings to picking strawberries in the summers, and the realization he has now as an adult of just how hard his parents worked to provide a joyful life for himself and his sister. By recording his own upbringing, we are given a glimpse into the past, and a time capsule for future generations to connect with those who came before. About the Author Thomas E. Barnett was born and raised on a farm in Livingston County, Kentucky, with a vision of rolling hills and valleys, a place called Bizzell Bluff. He lived three miles from the nearest town, called Burna, a small agricultural community where everyone looked out for one another. He attended Livingston County High School from 1973 to 1977.

Book excerpt: Many might wonder what an Oklahoma farm girl born in Indian Territory in 1906 has to offer in a life story. Pearlie: A Relatively True Story will prove that it's a lot. R.F. Jones pieces together the highlights of Pearlie's life into a historically rich, fictionalized biography that will enthrall and delight readers who love God, romance, history, or all three. Pearlie is about the title character's love affair with her childhood mate and their fifty-four-year marriage; her love affair with nature and the 'old home place' from which she was torn when she got married; her love affair with her Lord and his church; and her love affair with poetry, which she constantly uses to think through her most intimate thoughts and express her relationships on both a physical and spiritual level. With the help of R.F. Jones, Pearlie tells her story tenderly and humorously, with more smiles and laughter than tears, with escalating levels of happiness, and with a realistic but happy ending. It's a story about eternal life lived in the here and now. 'This Christian biography of an Oklahoma poetess combines the poignancy of the classic 'I Remember Mama, ' the humor of 'Life with Father, ' and poems which are reminiscent of Helen Rice Steiner's finest works. To read Pearlie is to experience a rich and inspiring ride back into Oklahoma history and encounter a Christian wife, mother, and writer who saw beauty everywhere and transformed her everyday world into a place of inspiration.' -Hope Harder, PhD in English literature, author of a series of books including 'Silent Voices'

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • A radiant collection of letters from the renowned author of Invisible Man that traces the life and mind of a giant of American literature, with insights into the riddle of identity, the writer’s craft, and the story of a changing nation over six decades These extensive and revealing letters span the life of Ralph Ellison and provide a remarkable window into the great writer’s life and work, his friendships, rivalries, anxieties, and all the questions about identity, art, and the American soul that bedeviled and inspired him until his death. They include early notes to his mother, written as an impoverished college student; lively exchanges with the most distinguished American writers and thinkers of his time, from Romare Bearden to Saul Bellow; and letters to friends and family from his hometown of Oklahoma City, whose influence would always be paramount. These letters are beautifully rendered first-person accounts of Ellison’s life and work and his observations of a changing world, showing his metamorphosis from a wide-eyed student into a towering public intellectual who confronted and articulated America’s complexities.
