Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Civil War I have written this account of my experience in the service of my country from memory, aided by old diaries, letters, etc., and have endeavored to be as accurate as possible, in regard to dates and events of historical importance, but if mistakes occur, it cannot be wondered at, after such a lapse of time. Some of my diaries were lost upon the battlefield, and of those that remain, many of the entries were in pencil and are almost effaced. I had no intention when I began writing of making a long story, but as I went on, memory brought back many a stirring scene, many a weary march, many a tender thought of comrades who shared them all with me, and so I have written them down as they came to me. My thanks are due my wife for so carefully editing, and my son for printing my attempt to keep in a permanent form, my recollections of the War of the Rebellion. (our ages, if equal ized, would, I fancy, have given about twenty years to each man.) We gave ourselves. This aristocracy of service, no end of military airs; some of us even going-to the extreme of keep ing our jackets buttoned and our hair combed. We had been in action, too; had shot off a Confederate leg at Philippi, the first battle of the war, and had lost as many as a dozen men at Laurel Hill and Carrick's Ford, whither the enemy had fled in trying, Heaven knows why, to get away from us. We now brought to the task of subduing the Rebellion a patriotism Which never for a moment doubted that a rebel was a fiend accursed of God and the angels one for whose extirpation by force and arms each youth of us considered himself specially raised up. It was a strange country. Nine in ten of us had never seen a mountain, nor a hill as high as a church spire, until we had crossed the Ohio River. In power upon the emotions nothing, I think, is comparable to a first sight of mountains. To a member of a plains-tribe, born and reared on the flats of Ohio or In diana, a mountain region' was a perpetual miracle. Space seemed to have taken on a new dimension; areas to have not only length and breadth, but thickness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Civil War retains a powerful hold on the American imagination, with each generation since 1865 reassessing its meaning and importance in American life. This volume collects twelve essays by leading Civil War scholars who demonstrate how the meanings of the Civil War have changed over time. The essays move among a variety of cultural and political arenas--from public monuments to parades to political campaigns; from soldiers' memoirs to textbook publishing to children's literature--in order to reveal important changes in how the memory of the Civil War has been employed in American life. Setting the politics of Civil War memory within a wide social and cultural landscape, this volume recovers not only the meanings of the war in various eras, but also the specific processes by which those meanings have been created. By recounting the battles over the memory of the war during the last 140 years, the contributors offer important insights about our identities as individuals and as a nation. Contributors: David W. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of the Civil War: In the United States Now that the lapse of time has softened the memories of the great conflict, and, beneath the kindly intercourse daily becoming cemented between North and South, the whole country is rapidly growing in prosperity, wealth, and power, the acts of men who were violently assailed in the hour Of heated strife can and ought to be viewed with justice and kindness. Especially is this so in regard to those who are now far enough beyond the reach of criticism - in the unknown world. It is the author's hope that nothing may be found in these papers contrary to that spirit of national charity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Years ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, - many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified. Professional historians have written of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War. The incidents here preserved are side-lights on its dark background but they helped in a small way to modify the bitterness of it all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.

Though my story deals with events that will live forever in the records of our country, I have not sought to give it the wings of poetic fancy whereby it may fly into the libraries of the earth. Within the happy family circle, from which my children are now gone, these oft-recounted recollections became a part of their education. I permitted them to turn the pages of my memory, as the leaves of a book, that they might learn the vanished glory of the old South - the loving loyalty and the sad travail of her people. And I trust that they learned also that our unfortunate Civil War - now, thank God, nearly sixty years behind us - was a clash of honest principles. That there were wild-eyed agitators and extremists on both sides, and that each had its scalawags and low-flung ruffians, there can be no doubt (and some of these - alas! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War It is the attempt of this book to show that the Civil War was more than a succession of battles; that it was a struggle between two civilizations, each the logical result of its environment, and each endeavoring to work out the best American interest as it saw it. That of the two civilizations, one was reactionary, and Opposed to both the humani tarian sentiments of the nineteenth century and the economic profit of the race, is quite as true as the fact that honesty and intelligence were about evenly divided in the contest. The motive for secession, slavery, was indefensible in the long run, but men brought up with that institution believed in it, and were led by it to believe that the Con stitution had not created a nation, a position in which they were contradicted by the facts of industry and the law of the land. On both counts, Slavery and secession, American history must adjudge the South to have been mistaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mohawk Peter: Legends of the Adirondacks and Civil War Memories Henry G. Dorr's life of more than four score years has covered many interesting and unusual events. As a young man, not as yet out of his teens, having chosen to engage in business rather than enter college, he sailed on the Samuel Appleton from New York bound for Hong Kong. He was not destined to reach Cathay: the long voyage was interrupted by rough weather off the Cape of Good Hope and the ship was obliged to put into Port Elizabeth in Algoa Bay. Opportunity seemed to offer for an enterprising Yankee in the Cape Colony and he remained there for two years and a half. On one occasion, in July, 1859, while making a pleasure-trek with an acquaintance into the country, he picked up an odd-looking pebble in the bed of an arroyo on the bank of which he was camping for the night. Later a jeweler recognized it as a diamond in the rough. Out of this incident might have developed a train of sequences which would have changed history. He had discovered the diamond-fields of South Africa, and if it had not been for the sudden death of one of his friends in London the two might have returned to the Cape Colony provided with ample funds to make explorations and exploit the mines which have since provided the world with half a billion dollars' worth of precious stones.
