Book excerpt: Classical Memories is an intervention into the field of adaptation studies, taking the example of classical reception to show that adaptation is a process that can be driven by and produce intertextual memories. I see ‘classical memories’ as a memory-driven type of adaptation that draws on and reproduces schematic and otherwise de-contextualised conceptions of antiquity and its cultural ‘exports’ in, broadly speaking, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These memory-driven adaptations differ, often in significant ways, from more traditional adaptations that seek to either continue or deconstruct a long-running tradition that can be traced back to antiquity as well as its canonical points of reception in later ages. When investigating such a popular and widespread set of narratives, characters, and images like those that remain of Graeco-Roman antiquity, terms like ‘adaptation’ and ‘reception’ could and should be nuanced further to allow us to understand the complex interactions between modern works and classical antiquity in more detail, particularly when it pertains to postcolonial or post-digital classical reception. In Classical Memories, I propose that understanding certain types of adaptations as intertextual memories allows us to do just that.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “THE CONFIDENCE-MAN (Modern Classics Series)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Confidence-Man is an ambiguous figure who sneaks aboard a Mississippi steamboat on April Fool's Day. This stranger attempts to test the confidence of the several steamboat passengers whose interlocking stories are told as they travel down the Mississippi River toward New Orleans. The novel is written as cultural satire, allegory, and metaphysical treatise, dealing with themes of sincerity, identity, morality, religiosity, economic materialism, irony, and cynicism. Herman Melville's writing draws on his experience at sea as a common sailor, exploration of literature and philosophy, and engagement in the contradictions of American society in a period of rapid change. His best known works include Typee, a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesian life, its sequel Omoo, and the great classic Moby-Dick.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Gladiateur to Persimmon: Turf Memories of Thirty Years To cover the ground thoroughly between 1865 and 1896 would necessitate the production of about half-a-dozen volumes the size of this one, and I have thought it wiser to give as complete histories as possible of a few great horses, rather than to produce hasty and unfinished sketches of three or four times the number. I have devoted myself almost exclusively to horses rather than to men. In the first place, I may frankly confess to regarding the former as infinitely the more inter esting of the two, and, in the second, it is possible to write perfectly freely and truthfully about them without any serious fear of giving offence. When one is dealing with men the case is altogether different. If they are still living, a plain and un varnished tale of the careers of some few of them would probably lead to libel actions, whilst I Should be reluctant indeed to write one word against any of those who have gone from us. De mortuis nil nisi bonum is a maxim in which I am a firm believer, though I do not interpret it to mean that, because a man is dead, it is necessary to write a fulsome eulogy of him, but rather that, where it is not possible to give honest praise, a discreet silence should be preserved. By reading for just 15 minutes a day throughout the year, you can discover text from “twelve main divisions of knowledge” including History, Poetry, Natural Science, Philosophy, Biography, Prose Fiction, Criticism and the Essay, Education, Political Science, Drama, Voyages and Travel and Religion. Based on Dr. Eliot's “reading guide” for The Harvard Classics, a complete chapter of reading material is included for each day of the year (even February 29th, in case you are reading during a Leap Year): "These selections assigned for each day in the year as you will see, are introduced by comments on the author, the subjects or the chief characters. They will serve to introduce you in the most pleasant manner possible to the Harvard Classics. They will enable you to browse enjoyably among the world’s immortal writings with entertainment and stimulation in endless variety.." Each reading is framed by an introduction, a context in which the text can be read and understood, often with insightful information about the author, it's wider history, or why that particular selection is appropriate reading for that day.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time three little horses grazed together in a meadow full of lovely, thick grass. Wherever one went, the other two followed. One day they met an artist named Peter, who was so happy to have found them. "We shall have good times together, you'll see," he told the three little horses. First introduced in 1958, these dear characters were Piet Worm's neighbors. The three little horses played all day long in a meadow near his house. Watching them and learning to know and love them sparked the idea for this book.

Book excerpt: The twenty-seven original contributions to this volume investigate the ways in which the First World War has been commemorated and represented internationally in prose fiction, drama, film, docudrama and comics from the 1960s until the present. The volume thus provides a comprehensive survey of the cultural memory of the war as reflected in various media across national cultures, addressing the complex connections between the cultural post-memory of the war and its mediation. In four sections, the essays investigate (1) the cultural legacy of the Great War (including its mythology and iconography); (2) the implications of different forms and media for representing the war; (3) ‘national’ memories, foregrounding the differences in post-memory representations and interpretations of the Great War, and (4) representations of the Great War within larger temporal or spatial frameworks, focusing specifically on the ideological dimensions of its ‘remembrance’ in historical, socio-political, gender-oriented, and post-colonial contexts.
