Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist The lithograph of the Little White Girl was drawn many years since with Whistler's knowledge from a photograph which he gave my father in the 'seventies. I had a habit of making little pastel notes of his pictures, which Whistler himself encouraged; and I have made lithographs of such as are associated with the text. McNeill Whistler Most of what is contained herein has been collected from time to time within the past ten years and jotted down for use in certain lectures on Whistler and his art. The lectures were, as is this book, a tribute to the great painter. The reminiscences are mostly personal. Many of the anecdotes - though perhaps equally familiar to others - were had from the artist's own lips. The views concerning his art, whether right or wrong, were formed while watching him at work day after day, and after many interviews in which, now and then, he would speak plainly concerning art. At the same time not so much as a thought must be attributed to him unless expressly quoted. The biographical data - just sufficient to furnish a connecting thread and aid in the appreciation - have been gathered from casual sources, and are, no doubt, subject to incidental corrections. Only when a duly authorized "life and letters" is published by those who have access to the material that must exist will the great artist be known by the world as he really was - a profoundly earnest, serious, loving, and lovable man. Meanwhile, those who believe in his art must - like the writer -speak their convictions for what they are worth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist In writing these few reminiscences, my intention has been to try to recall the picture of the man in his work as I knew him during many years. Soon after Whistler's death the Art Workers' Guild devoted an evening to his memory, and gathered together a small but very fine collection, representing all sides of his pictorial work, in Clifford's Inn Hall. This little book is based on a paper which I read at that meeting; and I have tried to bring out the side of his character which appealed to me most and to show him as the keen, untiring student and worker, rather than the brilliant figure in society or the keen fighter. A word as to the illustrations, which are mostly facsimiles of sketches by Whistler. Some are selected because they seem to me to show the artist thinking aloud as it were; many of these were pinned to the wall in his studio for a number of years; indeed, he did not part with them until some time in the 'eighties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of James McNeill Whistler: An Appreciation Years' study of Mr. Whistler's art, and the aim of the authors has been to point out the characteristics of his works, accepting them as they are, and not attempting to find in them qualities which they do not possess. It is their desire to lead others, to whom his art has hitherto been unfamiliar or incomprehensible, to a study which cannot fail to be a source of delight. The book was begun some two and a half years ago, but was put aside for a time and when taken up again, it was with the intention of laying it before Mr. Whistler as a slight testimony of the writers' admiration for his genius. His sudden death, how ever, which occurred while the proofs were pass ing through the press, prevented the fulfilment of. The Old World is apt to be irritated at American Chauvinism, but only with the object of concealing its own - if possible. No denizen of the Eastern hemisphere compares with the American in wittily and unsparingly laying bare his own weaknesses. From time to time - now, fortunately, less frequently than in the past - Eumpean journals dish up the most fatuous reports or anecdotes con cerning every function of human life, Which are invariably ear-marked as Typically American. The hawkers of such notices, however, invariably demonstrate with unfailing accuracy that they have not the faintest notion of what is typically American. There is plenty that is fabulous, silly, incredible, overwhelming, mysterious, and grotesque in other countries than America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whistler suddenly shot to fame like a meteor at a crucial moment in the history of art, a field in which he was a pioneer. Like the impressionists, with whom he sided, he wanted to impose his own ideas. Whistler’s work can be divided into four periods. The first may be called a period of research in which he was influenced by the Realism of Gustave Courbet and by Japanese art. Whistler then discovered his own originality in the Nocturnes and the Cremorne Gardens series, thereby coming into conflict with the academics who wanted a work of art to tell a story. When he painted the portrait of his mother, Whistler entitled it Arrangement in Grey and Black and this is symbolic of his aesthetic theories. When painting the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens it was not to depict identifiable figures, as did Renoir in his work on similar themes, but to capture an atmosphere. He loved the mists that hovered over the banks of the Thames, the pale light, and the factory chimneys which at night turned into magical minarets. Night redrew landscapes, effacing the details. This was the period in which he became an adventurer in art; his work, which verged on abstraction, shocked his contemporaries. The third period is dominated by the full-length portraits that brought him his fame. He was able to imbue this traditional genre with his profound originality. He tried to capture part of the souls of his models and placed the characters in their natural habitats. This gave his models a strange presence so that they seem about to walk out of the picture to physically encounter the viewer. By extracting the poetic substance from individuals he created portraits described as “mediums” by his contemporaries, and which were the inspiration for Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Towards the end of his life, the artist began painting landscapes and portraits in the classical tradition, strongly influenced by Velázquez. Whistler proved to be extremely rigorous in ensuring his paintings coincided with his theories. He never hesitated in crossing swords with the most famous art theoreticians of his day. His personality, his outbursts, and his elegance were a perfect focus for curiosity and admiration. He was a close friend of Stéphane Mallarmé, and admired by Marcel Proust, who rendered homage to him in A La Recherche du Temps Perdu. He was also a provocative dandy, a prickly socialite, a demanding artist, and a daring innovator.
