Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Thayer Name, From the Massachusetts Colony of Weymouth and Braintree, Embracing Genealogical and Biographical Sketches of Richard Thomas Thayer, and Their Descendants From 1636 to 1874 It is the custom of some persons to depreciate and even to ridicule genealogical inquiries and labors. The study of pedigree seems to them not only tedious, but profitless. They have no reverence or love for the past, and it is a matter of indifference who their ancestors were, or whether they ever had any. This is sometimes an eccentricity, sometimes a proud independence, which ignores ancestry in order to Increase its own importance and show that its highest honors have not been attained through the wealth, patronage or name of progenitors. But a more fruitful cause of this low estimate has been the boasting and arrogance of some with reference to their distinguished ancestors. There is a false and a foolish pride of lineage which deserve-censure and ridicule. It was such conceit that prompted a retort of Cicero, when a patrician said to him: "You are a plebian." "I am a plebian," replied the eloquent Roman orator, "and the nobility of my family begins with me; but that of your's will end with you." The vain reliance upon remote and doubtful pedigree, and the arrogant assumption of place and honor by reason of distinguished descent is without corresponding merit. The more one studies history, and races, and families, the more he must be convinced of the marked and permanent influences of blood, despite all the crossings by intermarriages. Every genealogist has marked and marveled at the continuance from generation to generation of some particular type of character that was visible in the earliest known ancestor, This fact has been strikingly illustrated in the two Thayer families and their descendants to this day; it is visible to any man of talent. To read aright the lesson of human history, to reach wise and safe generalizations, one must not forget the law of descent and force there is in blood or race. 'Tis poor, and not becoming perfect gentry, To build their glories at their father's cost; But at their own expense of blood or virtue. To raise them living monuments; our birth Is not our own act; honor upon trust, Our ill deeds forfeit; and the wealthy sums Purchased by others' fame or sweat, will be Our stain, for we inherit nothing truly But what our actions make us worthy of. The origin of the Thayer name is, as all sirnames are, signified by the occupation followed by the persons, as Smith, Sawyer, Cooper, &c., and others signified by die locality of the persons, as Hill, Pond, &c., and others some personal peculiarity, a Strong, Brown, White, &c. Many others, for some cause have the names of animals and birds; for them see names as Lyon, Fox, or Swan, &c. The word Thayer, as Judge Horace Metcalf's note to Dr. Elisha Thayer, of Dedham, Mass. who had examined the English law reports on the subject of the Thayer name spelled in the different ways in those reports: Thayer, Thear, Their.
