Book excerpt: Michael Bevan has been responsible for the some of the most remarkable and exciting performances in the history of one-day cricket. His uncanny knack to work the ball into the narrowest gaps, his quick and aggressive running, and his ability to stay calm and focused in a crisis have seen him dubbed the world's finest limited-overs batsman. In The Best of Bevan, Michael writes about the 30 matches he considers the most memorable of his career. Not all are one-day games, a few even ended in defeat, but each says something about the way he thinks the game should be played, how he approaches the art of batting and how he deals with the highs and lows of playing international cricket. For much of his career, Michael has been content to let his performances speak for him. Now, in this thought-provoking, wide-ranging book, he answers his critics, reveals what motivates him to succeed at the highest level and explains why he and his famous teammates have enjoyed so much success in recent times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive tome, essential to all cricket book collectors and Wisden readers. In the early 1980s Wisden published four anthologies that celebrated the best of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack stretching back to its first edition in 1864. Edited by the respected jazz musician, raconteur and cricket-lover, Benny Green, these volumes proved very popular. Wisden readers have long awaited a fifth, updated volume to cover the intervening period, marked by all-time greats like Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara and Shane Warne. The Wisden Anthology 1978-2006 meets this demand, though it does not follow the style of the Benny Green volumes. Rather than selecting random highlights, Stephen Moss has edited this anthology with the aim of painting a coherent picture of cricket's evolution over the past 30 years. Quite simply it is a story of revolution, beginning in Test cricket's centenary year when England regained the Ashes, Geoffrey Boycott scored his hundredth hundred, Ian Botham took five for 74 on debut, and Kerry Packer's millions ensured the era of deferential players earning a pittance was over for good. Thirty years on, for better or worse, cricket has changed radically. The top players form a highly paid elite who rarely venture beyond the international arena; television calls the tune; the political balance of power has shifted towards Asia; one-day cricket in coloured clothing is ubiquitous; and run-rates rise inexorably while batsmen tear bowlers to pieces as never before. To the gnarled old pros of the 1950s the game must be unrecognisable. A genuine revolution, charted in 40,000 Wisden pages over the past 30 years, is now distilled into a 1,280-page anthology that selects the matches, players, events and controversies which ushered the game into a brave new century.

Book excerpt: Tendai Mtawarira is known throughout the rugby world simply as Beast. Or, more often than not, ‘Beeeaaassssttt!’, as crowds from Durban to London, Buenos Aires to Auckland cry whenever he gets the ball. In 2018 he became the most capped prop in Springbok history, earning his 100th Test cap for the Springboks, and in 2019 he became the most capped Super Rugby player in South Africa. Due to play in his third World Cup in September 2019, Beast has been in a winning series against the British and Irish Lions, contested two Super Rugby finals and won three Currie Cups with his beloved Sharks. Along the way, he has been moved from back row to front row, bullied by xenophobic politicians and undergone three bouts of heart surgery. Beast is the story of how a humble man from Zimbabwe has become a rugby icon.

Book excerpt: One-day cricket began between English county teams on May 2, 1962. Leicestershire beat Derbyshire and Northamptonshire beat Nottinghamshire over 65 overs in the "Midlands Knock-Out Cup", which Northamptonshire went on to win a week later. The following year, the first full-scale one-day competition between firstclass teams was played, the knock-out Gillette Cup, won by Sussex. League one-day cricket also began in England, when the John Player Sunday League was started in 1969. Both these competitions have continued every season since inauguration, though the sponsorship has changed. The knock-out cup is now the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. The league is not exclusive to Sundays. The first Limited Overs International match was played in Melbourne in 1971, and the quadrennial cricket World Cup began in 1975. Many of the "packaging" innovations, such as coloured clothing, were as a result of World Series Cricket, a "rebel" series set up outside the cricketing establishment by Australian entrepreneur Kerry Packer. There have been many memorable One Day Internationals played through the years - many of them in World Cup tournaments. Scores have virtually doubled with a new breed of stronger and younger combatants at the wicket. The introduction of Twenty20, a curtailed form of one- day cricket with 20 overs per side, in 2003 has proven very popular, and several Twenty20 matches have been played between national teams. It makes several changes to the usual laws of cricket, including the addition of a "bowl-out" (similar to a penalty shoot-out in football) to decide the result of tied matches. One Day Cricket has been produced in a unique style resembling a white cricket ball and will provide all cricket enthusiasts with detailed statistics and many memorable moments. This is a genuine collectors item.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was suppose to be the wedding of the year but the way it was planned and executed, calling it secretive wedding of the year won’t be a wrong idea. Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, the outspoken couple, finally took a pledge of spending their life together, getting married in Italy. Media and fans tried their best to know the truth but kudos to planners, who ensured everything was kept under wraps. All eyes are on Murali Vijay and his role on the bouncy and fast tracks of South Africa. After being sidelined for long, the Indian opener has finally made a grand entry, scoring runs in the Test series against Sri Lanka. If Murali Vijay is in top form, Ajinkya’s wobbling batting has left a big question mark on his form. He was a mere traveler against Sri Lanka, losing his wicket cheaply and putting his team in trouble. Once hailed for his batsmanship, Ajinkya is no more the same player in Test cricket. There is no denying the fact that he can comeback easily, considering his career so far but he will have to do basics right in the future assignments. There is more to read from cricket in this issue.

This book is about the latter. Australia's favourite sport has a proud history of turning nobodies into somebodies and ordinary men and women into heroes of international renown. From the black-and-white belligerence of Ian Chappell to the colourful celebrity of Shane Warne, the diplomacy of Adam Gilchrist to the ruthlessness of Meg Lanning, the pantheon of Australia's greatest cricketers is as mottled as the crowds that cheer them on. But who is the greatest of them all? In The 50 Greatest Australian Cricketers, sports journalist and comedy writer Dan Liebke relives the careers, characteristics and enduring legacies of the finest Australian cricket players of the past 50 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.
