Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War I Memoirs of Major General William J. Snow, the U. S. Army's first Chief of Field Artillery. This book has been out of of print since 1941 and includes material that was not published in the original edition. This book focuses on the problems and challenges General Snow faced in mobilizing the Field Artillery for overseas service in France. World War I was widely known as an artillery war. This book is an insiders account of how the U.S. Army's Field Artillery came close to the breaking point and how General Snow tackled these challenges. "'Signposts of Experience' is a brilliant recounting of how the U.S. Field Artillery became the King of Battle for the U.S. Army on the doorstep of the First World War. Major General William Snow's Memoirs as first Chief of Field Artillery, provide artillery and fire support leaders of today a framework of initiative, organization, disciplined training, and exacting standards that has been the backbone of Red Leg pride for over a century. As we reset the Army today and prepare for the future we must ensure that we get 'fires' right. Major General Snow's experiences are a must read for those who wear the crossed cannons of the artillery as well as those that are supported by its fires." -- Lt. Gen. David P. Valcourt, US Army (Ret.), Chief of Field Artillery (2003-2005)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1798, this Revolutionary War memoir is one of the few ever written by a senior Continental Army commander. It provides a unique glimpse into the administrative operations and inner workings of the army during the American Revolution. Major General William Heath offers rare insights on the war’s major military personalities on both the American and British sides. Of particular interest are his wartime interactions with British generals John Burgoyne and William Phillips, as well as Continental Army generals such as George Washington and Charles Lee. Heath’s memoir also gives readers a detailed look at the constant struggles faced by the army, including food, supply, personnel and funding shortages, and presents an almost daily chronicle of the tribulations and successes experienced by patriot forces during the war.

Book excerpt: William Passmore Carlin (1829-1903), a native of Illinois, graduated from West Point in 1850 and served on frontier duty and in Utah before the Civil War. He began his Civil War career as the colonel of an Illinois regiment, served with distinction in early fighting in Missouri and Mississippi, and participated in important command roles at the battles of Perryville, Stones River, Liberty Gap, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Buzzard Roost, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, and Bentonville and at the siege of Atlanta. He was a successful and important brigade and division commander from Perryville to Sherman's March to the Sea and into the Carolinas at the close of the war. Carlin remained in the army until he retired in 1893 as a brigadier general after significant further service in the West. To supplement Carlin's memoirs, the editors have provided two biographical essays and extensive annotation. They have consulted manuscript holdings in twenty-five repositories, including pertinent material from diaries, letters, reminiscences, and unit histories written by contemporaries. Readers of these memoirs have a rare chance to follow the career of an officer from the 1850s through Reconstruction and beyond.

He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. These are not only his complete memoirs, but also a perfect narrative and a thrilling account of the Civil War Years.

Book excerpt: The defeat of Napoleons French army by the combined forces of Wellington and Blcher at Waterloo on 18 June 1815 was a turning point in world history. This was the climax of the Napoleonic Wars, and the outcome had a major influence on the shape of Europe for the next century and beyond. The battle was a milestone, and it cannot be properly understood without a detailed, on-the-ground study of the landscape in which it was fought and that is the purpose of David Butterys new battlefield guide. In vivid detail, using eyewitness accounts and an intimate knowledge of the terrain, he reconstructs Waterloo and he takes the reader and the visitor across the battleground as it is today. He focuses on the pivotal episodes in the fighting the day-long struggle for the chateau at Hougoumont, the massive French infantry assaults, repeated cavalry charges, the fall of La Haye Sainte, the violent clashes in the village of Plancenoit, the repulse of the Imperial Guard and rout of the French army. This thoroughgoing, lucid, easy-to-follow guide will be a fascinating introduction for anyone who seeks to understand what happened on that momentous day, and it will be an essential companion for anyone who explores the battlefield in Belgium.

Book excerpt: Hailed as prophet of modern war and condemned as a harbinger of modern barbarism, William Tecumseh Sherman is the most controversial general of the American Civil War. “War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it,” he wrote in fury to the Confederate mayor of Atlanta, and his memoir is filled with dozens of such wartime exchanges. With the propulsive energy and intelligence that marked his campaigns, Sherman describes striking incidents and anecdotes and collects dozens of his incisive and often outspoken wartime orders and reports. This complex self-portrait of an innovative and relentless American warrior provides firsthand accounts of the war’s crucial events—Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, the marches through Georgia and the Carolinas. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. Book excerpt: Sir William Nott (1782-1845) was an army officer in the East India Company who commanded British and Anglo-Indian forces in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). He was born into a farm family of modest means in Glamorganshire, Wales, and received a limited elementary education. He embarked for India in 1800, and received a commission in the army of the East India Company. For many years he commanded a succession of native infantry regiments. Throughout his military career he appreciated the military qualities of the sepoy (Indian soldiers serving in the army of the East India Company), which he compared favorably with those of the British soldier. A colonel before the Anglo-Afghan War began, Nott soon was promoted to general. He commanded British and native troops in several successful engagements and on January 13, 1842, was appointed commander of all British and Anglo-Indian troops in Lower Afghanistan and Sind. He won a major victory over Afghan forces near Ghazni on August 30, 1842, which led to the capture of Kabul and ultimately termination of the war. After service as resident at the court of Lucknow, Nott returned to England, where within two years he died. This book was compiled posthumously by J.H. Stocqueler, the author of several books of biography and British military history, using documents in the possession of Nott's daughters. Volume two of the work has a long appendix containing documents relevant to Nott's activities in Afghanistan, some by Nott himself but most by other officers. Nott is regarded by historians as by far the best British general in the Anglo-Afghan War.
