Book excerpt: Along the Ohio, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers, the archaeological remains of earthen pyramids, plazas, large communities, and works of art and artifacts testify to Native American civilizations that thrived there between 3000 B.C. and A.D. 1500. This fascinating book presents exciting new information on the art and cultures of these ancient peoples and features hundreds of gorgeous photographs of important artworks, artifacts, and ritual objects excavated from Amerindian archaeological sites. Drawing on excavation findings and extensive research, the contributors to the book document a succession of distinct ancient populations in the pre-Columbian world of the American Midwest and Southeast. A team of interdisciplinary scholars examines the connections between archaeological remains of different regions and the themes, forms, and rituals that continue in specific tribes of today. The book also includes the personal reflections of contemporary Native Americans who discuss their perspectives on the significance of the fascinating and beautiful prehistoric artifacts as well as their own cultural practices today.

Every effort has been made to secure an accurate translation and to keep the decisive style of the author; while the Editor has respected the fact that the author could not revise the proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Vol. 5: Harvard University, Memoirs This report by Mr. Maler completes the series on the explorations which he has carried on for several years under an agreement made with the Peabody Museum. The report is printed without certain plans referred to by Mr. Maler which have not been received from him. This omission is, how ever, supplied by the Museum Expedition Of 1910 (see foot-notes on page 10, et seq.) In order to use the plans when reading Mr. Maler's report, the two reports are issued under one cover. To further facilitate reference, a table has been prepared (see page Vii of no. Giving the names Used by Mr. Maler and the corresponding terms used in the report of 1910. A number of measurements were left blank in Mr. Maler's manuscript, and these have been supplied by the Expedition of 1910, all such being given in italic figures. Mr. Maler's reports were written in German, and it is therefore especially unfortunate that he has not returned the proofs Of this and also Of the two preceding reports published in Volume IV, Number 3 Of these Memoirs. However, the translations were carefully made by two German scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Professor Seymour Howard's publications over the last forty years have introduced many innovative approaches to research in the history of art and archaeology. The arrangement of these two dozen essays in seven topical groups suggests their growth, origins, and relationships. Most of the studies deal with well-known canons of art from uncanonical points of view, which reflect the author's work as a practicing artist as well as his interdisciplinary training as a humanistic scholar. These rigorous and wide-ranging studies explore historic makings and meanings of graphic imagery, whose fundamental importance for understanding and communication has lost nothing of its power during the ascendance of literacy. The title essay and preface are new, as are the additional annotation and commentary; the author's bibliography and an index have been supplied.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Vol. 1: Researches in the Uloa Valley, Honduras; Report on Explorations by the Museum, 1896-97 The inhabitants of this region are difierent in many respects from the natives of the mountainous districts in the interior. Their ethnological antecedents would be difficult to trace, but I am convinced that there is an infusion of Carib blood which in its later constitution involves a strong Negro element. The physical resemblance to the modern Carib of the coast is in some individuals very noticeable, and in many respects the disposition of these people resembles that of the Carib; their exclusiveness and aversion to dealings with strangers are marked Carib traits. Since the latter are averse to mixing with people of different blood from their own and have a strong attachment to the salt water, the present instance of departure from deep rooted customs must have been brought about by refugees or outcasts. For the rest, the racial antecedents of the people who are met with in the village communities on the banks of the Uloa River are derived from the Xicaque Indian and the Spaniard. From La Pimienta to the mouth of the river there are twenty or thirty of these villages varying in size from half a dozen to fifty or sixty huts, often completely hidden among the trees and rarely attended with any clearing or cultivated fields. The inhabitants follow the usual occupation of doing nothing. There is abundance of fish in the river, and the forest is full of game, but they seldom take the trouble of procuring either, pre ferring to subsist on green plantains alone. In respect of industry they certainly do not take after their Carib progenitors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
