Book excerpt: Cab drivers! What a strange lot! Why would anyone want to drive a hack for a living? Other than being capable enough to safely operate a vehicle, you don't need any special skills or training. You don't need a university degree in the humanities, though you may become a qualified human affairs expert after driving a cab for several years. Cabbies must be the most misunderstood creatures in the world! Why else would they do what they do? Without it being said, a cab driver works twelve hour shifts on a routine daily basis. They often get assaulted, and even more often than not, they get ripped off. Society as a whole views cabbies as individuals with the same I.Q. as a lava lamp, who only drive a taxi because they can't get a job anywhere else, and, they probably have a criminal record too! They get screamed at, threatened, spat on, slapped, punched, kicked, stabbed, and tragically, some get murdered. What person in their right mind would want to take on this kind of a life when they could earn a lot more money with a lot less aggravation and abuse by simply donning a pair of dark glasses and selling pencils on any street corner? I drove a taxi in the city of Winnipeg for about twenty years for Red Patch Taxi. These memories are my memories and I am gladly sharing them with you, the reader. My biggest thanks go out to the city of Winnipeg and to all of its citizens whom I found to be the friendliest people anywhere! I hope that these stories of mine will move you emotionally, either with a smile, a laugh or a tear. Winnipeg, thanks for the memories! Savour the stories!

Book excerpt: Infused with John's unique sense of wry humor, these stories take the reader along on a ride through John's experiences as a cab driver in Brockton, Mass during the late 1970s. The stories are a mixture of the hilarious, odd, insightful, and sorrowful; introducing the reader to such characters as Black Laurel and Hardy, Captain Quaalude, and Mr. Magoo. This is how one cab ride ended as John pulled up to an ER..."An orderly, hearing the tires give up their remaining tread in an anguished squeal, ran out expecting a near death emergency arrival. I jammed my driver seat forward and ran over to open Mom's door. She got out calmly, I was anticipating a warm "thanks."She got hold of her purse. I figured to get the fare and a great tip. Instead, she starts beating me with it! Hard! I am 6′4″ and she was able to hit me squarely on top of my head. She was going to nail me into the ground like a human spike! She said, "I told you to get me to the hospital quickly, not to put me in it!" (as she rained beats down on me with her purse) Little Guy (her son) was hopping up and down saying "Can we do that again!?! That was unbelievable!" which made Mom angrier. The orderly skidded to a stop, wondering if I was the bad guy, Mom was a maniac, or this might be some personal matter between two consenting adults, especially one (Mom) that weighed about 4 times what he did. He said nothing, did not come an inch closer. He seemed frozen in fear, a desire for personal safety, and a crushing curiosity to see how it played out."This is how another cab ride ended after two guys considered robbing John..."I got them to their destination in one piece. The fare was just under $10, blond threw me a twenty and said, "Keep it," as they fell over themselves in their hurry to get out. I didn't even thank them for the tip, just acted as if I expected it. Like it was payment for the 'joy ride.'The last thing the black-haired guy said as the scrambled out. "I never met someone as nuts as you, man. Never!"Blond goes, "You're not safe, man. You're nuts. You shouldn't be f**kin' driving!"I looked at them with a bored, 'do this all the time' look and shrugged....I radioed for Gary to get the cops. I gave the address, a description, and said the cops should be careful as at least one was armed."Join John for other fares as he drives from experience to experience, wending his way through an incredible world of stories from his cab driving days.

Book excerpt: This narrative Vegas Taxi: Memoir of a Cab Driver is a biographical journey when the narrator, starting from Lebanon where he lived for twelve years in a desperate situation, who had no future whatsoever, he lived under severe poverty with $200 monthly income. He had no chance to continue his education, his life was constantly threatened to death any time and any day, he lived in fear every moment, and above all, the lack of hope for a new life in the western countries was the most devastating to him. However, he did not give up, his determination in challenging all these obstacles, and his strength for survival were the only weapons he had to fight the difficulties he was facing. Therefore, he planned an insane escape route in order to get out of his hopeless situation. Afterwards, when desperation began to dominate his spirit, he received a call from the United Nation, they told him that his application was approved, which took ten years for them to approve it since the day he turned-in the application, and they told him to get ready to go to the land of dreams, the USA. After his arrival to the USA, he started with great effort to build his life from scratch, and he did, as most foreigners do because they appreciate the new opportunities that have been offered to them. He worked very hard day and night, starting with his employment at a hotel/casino on the strip of Las Vegas then as a cabdriver. He drove taxi for fifteen years. The narrative is basically about the taxicab stories as tourists during the nightlife of Las Vegas enjoy being themselves away from their daily routine at their homes and in their ordinary lifestyle. So, the producing of this biographical story began, but it is not only about the funny stories that cab drivers tell their passengers to make an extra couple dollars for a tip, but the narrator also conveys the dark side of cabdrivers' lives. He discloses certain aspects of the mental agony that some drivers suffer from, which is portrayed through the antagonistic character Wahid, a Middle Eastern origin with different moral values. Wahid's main suffering is for being neglected by his American friends; the racism he must face every day is what agitates him the most. Nightmares haunt him increasingly, which even make him more frustrated with everything moving and going on around him. The narrator addresses specifically the American audiences to make them aware how certain diverse cultures find it difficult to cope with American culture, and how this conflict sometimes reaches mental breakdown for naturalized immigrants. This is an immigrant true story with a twist of a psychological approach in contrast to the protagonist who represents the bright side of Wahid's character. Therefore, I wanted to contribute with my biographical story to relate it with the American audiences so they would have a better understanding of cross cultures' conflicts, an understanding that might bring people closer by mutual respect amongst the diverse cultures, and to help to disclose the ugliness of prejudiced attitude towards foreigners.

Book excerpt: Vegas Taxi: Memoir of a Cab Driver By Sherzad Kurdi Upon the request of many of his passengers over years, author Sherzad Kurdi decided to write this book from his perspective about the night life of Las Vegas as a cab driver with an appealing sense of humor. Whether the diverse tourists came to Las Vegas on the weekends for fun or business, people simply just wanted to be themselves for a few days, enjoying their life away from the reality of the daily boring routine back where they come from. In order to share some taxi cab funny stories beside the dramatic plot of the story of the main character Serge, Kurdi is able to illustrate the fact that life is beautiful and too short for any person to stress over it. Through the eyes of the other characters, he pictured a fascinating way of looking positively towards life and appreciating the freedom that was given to him. Kurdi wants to share a few laughs with the readers and asks them to enjoy the ride. About the Author At age seventeen, author Sherzad Kurdi joined the Kurdish Freedom Fighters against the dictatorship regime in Iraq. After the genocide of 1988 that was committed by the regime with the chemical bombing attack on the Kurdish villages, he was forced to leave his beloved country for Lebanon. He waited twelve years to come to the land of opportunities, until his dreams finally came true in the year 2000 when he was able to move to Las Vegas, where he has resided ever since. Kurdi started his life working in a hotel on the strip and then became a cab driver since 2003.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Bressani Literary Prize • A Globe and Mail Book of the Year • A CBC Books Best Canadian Nonfiction of 2021 In conversations with drivers ranging from veterans of foreign wars to Indigenous women protecting one another, Di Cintio explores the borderland of the North American taxi. “The taxi,” writes Marcello Di Cintio, “is a border.” Occupying the space between public and private, a cab brings together people who might otherwise never have met—yet most of us sit in the back and stare at our phones. Nowhere else do people occupy such intimate quarters and share so little. In a series of interviews with drivers, their backgrounds ranging from the Iraqi National Guard, to the Westboro Baptist Church, to an arranged marriage that left one woman stranded in a foreign country with nothing but a suitcase, Driven seeks out those missed conversations, revealing the unknown stories that surround us. Travelling across borders of all kinds, from battlefields and occupied lands to midnight fares and Tim Hortons parking lots, Di Cintio chronicles the many journeys each driver made merely for the privilege to turn on their rooflight. Yet these lives aren’t defined by tragedy or frustration but by ingenuity and generosity, hope and indomitable hard work. From night school and sixteen-hour shifts to schemes for athletic careers and the secret Shakespeare of Dylan’s lyrics, Di Cintio’s subjects share the passions and triumphs that drive them. Like the people encountered in its pages, Driven is an unexpected delight, and that most wondrous of all things: a book that will change the way you see the world around you. A paean to the power of personality and perseverance, it’s a compassionate and joyful tribute to the men and women who take us where we want to go.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the most memorable moments in a Brisbane cab driver's fifteen year long career that began at the time of the Brisbane Expo 88' all the way to and after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. Having just arrived in Australia as an asylum seeker, fleeing the East European communist party for his outspoken views, George, a former photographer and landscape artist, arrives in Brisbane, Australia with nothing more than the shirt on his back and the dream to start a new life and find work. Straight away, he encounters the first major obstacle: the language barrier. Unable to secure a job in his old profession, and desperate to provide for his family, George turns to the highly sought after profession of taxi driving which is in high demand due to the flocks of international visitors arriving for the World Expo 88'. As the story develops, we get to know George better, and as his English skills improve, he begins to communicate more and more with his passengers who begin to tell him the most outrageous, intimate and secret stories in their lives. On the way, he manages to have a few outrageous incidents of his own with drunk, abusive, and sometimes seductive passengers who try to take advantage of him. The book is an insight into the lives of the average Brisbane cab drivers and how they deal with the daily pressures of their profession and the risks involved with it. George is no longer driving a cab and is semi retired. He is my father, and he lives in Brisbane's Southside in Springwood.

Through a set of unusual circumstances, it was recently revealed that Akamai Kane, the lone cab driver on the Polynesian island of Kiki Loa, is worth over $20 billion dollars. Reporter after reporter tried to get his story, but Mr. Kane steadfastly refused all type of interviews. Then a spokesperson for Mr. Kane announced that he was flattered by all the attention and everyone's interest, but that he didn't want to spend all his time answering the same questions repeatedly. As a solution, he offered to let one journalist, whom he would select from applications submitted, write a book of his life's story. To enter the selection process, the journalist had to submit, in their own opinion, their finest work. Dan Langston, a staff writer for a large northeastern newspaper, was selected from more than three thousand professional writers who competed for this privilege; and this book, Memoirs of a Billionaire Cab Driver, is Mr. Kane's story. Mr. Kane granted Mr. Langston a one day interview, which consisted of a taxi tour around the beautify island of Kiki Loa. The secrets Mr. Kane revealed explain exactly how he went from being a very poor island boy with no prospects of a bright future to becoming one of the richest men in the world. Surprisingly, Mr. Kane was able to demonstrate each key secret to Mr. Langston through an example already occurring through nature on the island. Through each example pointed out in nature. There has never been a cab driver like Dmitry Samarov and, since he's given up for keeps late-night for-hire driving, there never will be."-Rick Kogan, hall-of-fame reporter for the Chicago Tribune "With his gorgeous pen and ink drawings and funny, tragic, and all too true stories, Samarov's chronicle of his adventures as a Chicago taxi driver is by far the best ride you'll ever take in a cab."-Wendy MacNaughton Dmitry Samarov's illustrated memoir captures encounters with drunken passengers, overbearing cops, unreasonable city bureaucracy, his fellow cabdrivers, a few potholes, and other unexpectedly beautiful moments. Accompanied by dozens of Samarov's original artworks-composed during traffic jams, waits at the airport, and lulls in his shifts-the stories in Where To' provide a street-level view of America from the perspective of an immigrant painter driving a cab for money. Dmitry Samarov was born in Moscow, USSR, in 1970. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1978. He got in trouble in first grade for doodling on his Lenin Red Star pin and hasn't stopped doodling since. After a false start at Parsons School of Design in New York, he graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993. Upon graduation he promptly began driving a cab-first in Boston, then after a time, in Chicago.

Book excerpt: Insane Taxi driver Confessions is a collection of wonderfully weird and outrageously funny short stories from the author's personal experiences with passengers, as well as strange tales from passengers and other fellow taxi drivers. The reader will enjoy a detailed insight into the real and raw situations that occur in today's society. This book will bring the secret lives that people live in the big cities out of the darkness and into the street lights. The author highlights how vulnerable teenagers become when they go out clubbing. This is especially dangerous for students who are living away from home for the first time, with no significant life experience because they were raised under close parental supervision. Besides the humour and entertainment, Aaron Kline hopes that his book will encourage people to become more vigilant and aware when they are out in the big cities, surrounded by the extreme craziness of society.
