Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the most memorable moments in a Brisbane cab driver's fifteen year long career that began at the time of the Brisbane Expo 88' all the way to and after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. Having just arrived in Australia as an asylum seeker, fleeing the East European communist party for his outspoken views, George, a former photographer and landscape artist, arrives in Brisbane, Australia with nothing more than the shirt on his back and the dream to start a new life and find work. Straight away, he encounters the first major obstacle: the language barrier. Unable to secure a job in his old profession, and desperate to provide for his family, George turns to the highly sought after profession of taxi driving which is in high demand due to the flocks of international visitors arriving for the World Expo 88'. As the story develops, we get to know George better, and as his English skills improve, he begins to communicate more and more with his passengers who begin to tell him the most outrageous, intimate and secret stories in their lives. On the way, he manages to have a few outrageous incidents of his own with drunk, abusive, and sometimes seductive passengers who try to take advantage of him. The book is an insight into the lives of the average Brisbane cab drivers and how they deal with the daily pressures of their profession and the risks involved with it. George is no longer driving a cab and is semi retired. He is my father, and he lives in Brisbane's Southside in Springwood.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the Ideas and Insight of Taxi Terry...The Best Guide to Customer Service You Will Ever Read No matter who you are, what you do, where you work, or how much money you make, you can learn a lot from a cab driver--especially when it is Taxi Terry, a successful self-starting entrepreneur who combines passion with effort and skill to create distinction in his job and in his life. Bestselling author and Hall of Fame speaker Scott McKain was so impressed by Terry's joyful approach to customer service, he incorporated the driver's inspiring personal philosophy and uplifting advice into his business speeches at corporate events--with stunning success. These are the 7 Tenets of Taxi Terry: Set high expectations--then, exceed them! Delivering what helps the customer . . . helps you. Customers are people--so, personalize the experience. Think logically--then act creatively and consistently. Make the customer the star of your show! Help your customers to come back for more. Creating joy for your customer will make your work--and life--more joyful! If you want to be more than just a job title, Taxi Terry will inspire you to be better at what you do and become the best in your field. You'll find step-by-step strategies for each of the seven tenets, with actionable solutions that can be applied to an endless range of workplace problems. Also, with a special focus on "internal customers"--the people you rely on every day within your own company--the book addresses one of the most destructive issues in business today: employee disengagement. Using the same techniques that win over customers, you can actively engage coworkers, clients, and colleagues more effectively. In other words, everybody wins. 7 Tenets of Taxi Terry is your road map to an extraordinary journey--full of wonderful encounters and mutually rewarding experiences--that will take you anywhere you want to go. PRAISE FOR 7 TENETS OF TAXI TERRY: "Scott McKain is a great storyteller and Taxi Terry delivers: it provides you what you need to know and do to provide your customers the kind of experience that will delight them and keep them coming back for more." -- Mark Sanborn, author of The Fred Factor and CEO of Sanborn and Associates "McKain clearly shows again why he is the master at teaching companies how they can out-market, out-sell, and out-service their competition." -- Dr. Tony Alessandra, author of The Platinum Rule and The NEW Art of Managing People "McKain shows you how to consistently deliver a level of service that makes you and your business distinctive in the hearts and minds of your customers. Book excerpt: Train your brain with the secrets behind the world's toughest feat of memory: the London Knowledge The Knowledge is a unique book: a guide to getting more out of your brain and your city. A fully illustrated, lovingly detailed look at London's best kept secrets, it will also take you down the pathways of your mind and teach you how to keep your memory sharp. Written by a licensed London cab driver and tour guide, The Knowledge is the first ever book to take readers inside the legendarily difficult - and fast-vanishing - set of skills that all licensed cab drivers must have: a perfect, thoroughly tested knowledge of every street, alley, turning and landmark of London. The black cab is an iconic symbol of London, but to drive it, prospective cabbies must take what is often considered the world's hardest exam, involving learning every street, turning and waypoint along 320 different routes across London, along with every landmark within 1/4 of a mile of the start and end of each route: altogether 25,000 streets and 2,000 places of interest. Learning the Knowledge takes years, and dozens of appearances at gruelling oral exams, but those who pass become part of a unique partnership, with no parallel anywhere in the world. Scientific studies have consistently shown that London cabbies who have passed the Knowledge have enlarged brains and near-superhuman memory capacities. The Knowledge is the first book to take readers inside the extraordinary mind of the cabbie, with 50 real Knowledge routes across London, beautifully mapped and illustrated to show the streets and landmarks, with notes on their hidden histories and popular associations, and sections allowing the reader to test their memory on these routes, accompanied with an introduction discussing the history and science of the Knowledge and guides to memory-training techniques used by cabbies and memory champions around the world.

Book excerpt: As any traveler knows, some of the best and most honest conversations take place during car rides. So, when a long-time NPR correspondent wanted to learn more about the real China, he started driving a cab--and discovered a country amid seismic political and economic change. China--America's most important competitor--is at a turning point. With economic growth slowing, Chinese people face inequality and uncertainty as their leaders tighten control at home and project power abroad. In this adventurous, original book, NPR correspondent Frank Langfitt describes how he created a free taxi service--offering rides in exchange for illuminating conversation--to go beyond the headlines and get to know a wide range of colorful, compelling characters representative of the new China. They include folks like "Beer," a slippery salesman who tries to sell Langfitt a used car; Rocky, a farm boy turned Shanghai lawyer; and Chen, who runs an underground Christian church and moves his family to America in search of a better, freer life. Blending unforgettable characters, evocative travel writing, and insightful political analysis, The Shanghai Free Taxi is a sharply observed and surprising book that will help readers make sense of the world's other superpower at this extraordinary moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Mann is one of the most important American filmmakers of the past forty years. His films exhibit the existential concerns of art cinema, articulated through a conspicuous and recognizable visual style and yet integrated within classical Hollywood narrative and genre frameworks. Since his beginnings as a screenwriter in the 1970s, Mann has become a key figure within contemporary American popular culture as writer, director, and producer for film and television. This volume offers a detailed study of Mann's feature films, from The Jericho Mile (1979) to Public Enemies (2009), with consideration also being given to parallels in the production, style, and characterization in his television work. It explores Mann's relationship with classical genres, his thematic concentration on issues of morality and masculinity, his film adaptations from literature, and the development and significance of his trademark visual style within modern American cinema.
