Book excerpt: Memoir of the Life and Character of Thomas Wilson is a moving tribute to a man who devoted his life to learning and service. Thomas Wilson was a respected educator and administrator, and his tenure as treasurer of Highbury College was marked by his dedication to the welfare of the students and the institution. In this beautifully written biography, his grandson Joshua Wilson offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable man, and shows how his legacy lives on in the work of those he inspired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Life and Character of Thomas Wilson, Esq.: Treasurer of Highbury College The reception which this work has met with from that portion of the periodical press, the conductors of which have deemed it worthy of any particular notice, has been gratifying to the author. An higher encouragement has been derived from the fact, which has fallen under his own knowledge, that in more than one instance an effect so decidedly beneficial has been produced on the reader's mind, as to lead, by the blessing of God, to important practical results. It is a source of peculiar gratification to the author that the publication of this Memoir has contributed, in some degree, to diffuse the spirit of expansive liberality which led his honoured father to con secrate a large amount of property to the building of houses devoted to God; and he cannot refrain from publicly ex pressing the delight with which he has observed, that since the work appeared, a new and more powerful impulse has been given, among the Congregational Nonconformists of London, to the erection of chapels in those large suburban towns which are rapidly springing up in all directions round the vast metropolis of our country. To his own mind nothing ap pears more clearly, than the urgent imperative duty, devolving especially upon those who by birth, residence, or other cir cumstances, are immediately connected with the metropolis, to adopt the most active measures and to raise the most liberal contributions in order to multiply large and commodious chapels in the constantly extending inhabited region around that already immense city. He will venture here to record his own firm, deliberate conviction, that if the English Independents desire in the most effectual manner to advance the highest interest of their country, by promoting the eternal welfare of their fellow-country men, they will combine their energies to carry forward this work in the populous cities and towns of England. By erecting fifty appropriate edifices in London. And fifty more in the larger towns, consecrated to the public worship of God, and the faith ful preaching of the Gospel, we should, he is firmly persuaded, more effectually promote the cause of our Lord and Saviour than by any other means. It is all thanks to a surprising romance, a new passion for food, and a spirited woman who will become her mother-in-law--and teach her to laugh, to seize joy, and to love"--

Book excerpt: 'Life for De Quincey was either angels ascending on vaults of cloud or vagrants shivering on the city streets.' Thomas De Quincey - opium-eater, celebrity journalist, and professional doppelgänger – is embedded in our culture. Modelling his character on Coleridge and his sensibility on Wordsworth, De Quincey took over the poet's former cottage in Grasmere and turned it into an opium den. Here, increasingly detached from the world, he nurtured his growing hatred of his former idols and his obsession with murder as one of the fine arts. De Quincey may never have felt the equal of the giants of the Romantic Literature he so worshipped but the writing style he pioneered – scripted and sculptured emotional memoir – was to inspire generations of writers: Dickens, Dostoevsky, Virginia Woolf. James Joyce knew whole pages of his work off by heart and he was arguably the father of what we now call psychogeography. This spectacular biography, the produce of meticulous scholarship and beautifully supple prose, tells the riches-to-rags story of a figure of dazzling complexity and dazzling originality, whose rackety life was lived on the run, and both brings De Quincey and his martyred but wild soul triumphantly to life and firmly establishes Frances Wilson in the front rank of contemporary biographers.

Book excerpt: The first major biography of America’s twenty-eighth president in nearly two decades, from one of America’s foremost Woodrow Wilson scholars. A Democrat who reclaimed the White House after sixteen years of Republican administrations, Wilson was a transformative president—he helped create the regulatory bodies and legislation that prefigured FDR’s New Deal and would prove central to governance through the early twenty-first century, including the Federal Reserve system and the Clayton Antitrust Act; he guided the nation through World War I; and, although his advocacy in favor of joining the League of Nations proved unsuccessful, he nonetheless established a new way of thinking about international relations that would carry America into the United Nations era. Yet Wilson also steadfastly resisted progress for civil rights, while his attorney general launched an aggressive attack on civil liberties. Even as he reminds us of the foundational scope of Wilson’s domestic policy achievements, John Milton Cooper, Jr., reshapes our understanding of the man himself: his Wilson is warm and gracious—not at all the dour puritan of popular imagination. As the president of Princeton, his encounters with the often rancorous battles of academe prepared him for state and national politics. Just two years after he was elected governor of New Jersey, Wilson, now a leader in the progressive movement, won the Democratic presidential nomination and went on to defeat Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft in one of the twentieth century’s most memorable presidential elections. Ever the professor, Wilson relied on the strength of his intellectual convictions and the power of reason to win over the American people. John Milton Cooper, Jr., gives us a vigorous, lasting record of Wilson’s life and achievements. This is a long overdue, revelatory portrait of one of our most important presidents—particularly resonant now, as another president seeks to change the way government relates to the people and regulates the economy.
