Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this lovely, easy-to-use illustrated guide to decluttering, the beloved author of The Happiness Project shows us how to take control of our stuff—and, by extension, our lives. Gretchen Rubin knows firsthand that creating order can make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. But for most of us, a rigid, one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. When we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we can find inner calm. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what’s realistic for most people, Rubin suggests dozens of manageable tips and tricks for creating a more serene, orderly environment, including: • Never label anything “miscellaneous.” • Ask yourself, “Do I need more than one?” • Don’t aim for minimalism. • Remember: If you can’t retrieve it, you won’t use it. • Stay current with a child’s interests. • Beware the urge to “procrasticlear.” By getting rid of things we don’t use, don’t need, or don’t love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value.

Book excerpt: If you're looking for inspiration, escape, or just poetic entertainment, you've come to the right place. Memento Mori's poems are honest, simple and beautifully crafted. Their honesty gives them force, and their simplicity makes them accessible. There is no wondering, no confusion, no searching for a message. Some poems will thrill you as you read them, others will work slowly into your heart, and still others will call you back time and time again to revisit them. Memento Mori offers something for everybody. The newcomer will find they "get" these poems without having to struggle, while the veteran will enjoy discovering the secret treasures hidden within them. In a time when poetry seems to be more about what is not said than what is, Memento Mori gets back to the basics by combining the delicate beauty of poetry with the fine art of storytelling. Memento Mori: in Latin it means "remember your mortality." Life is short-it's time to read and feel the poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily M. DeArdo was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at eleven, so she knows what it’s like to live with a keen awareness of her own mortality. She draws on the medieval practice of memento mori, “remember you must die,” and shares her personal story with unique and compelling insight into the meaning of Christian life and death. Using the Stations of the Cross as a framework, DeArdo leads you to trust in God’s providence as you confront suffering and death and develop enduring spiritual strength and courage along the way. Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble, F.S.P., kicked off a rediscovery of memento mori on social media when she began tweeting about #mementomori and what it’s like living with a plastic skull on her desk. Emily DeArdo said the practice caught on with millennials like her who are searching for what’s real, true, and lasting in life. Trying to find the answer to “is this all there is?” often leads to thinking about death and what happens afterward, she noted. In Living Memento mori, DeArdo shares the insight she has gained from living her life on the precipice of death: a willingness to embrace the Cross of Christ can transform the pain and loss we all inevitably experience into a source of spiritual growth. DeArdo shows you how even a life of considerable suffering can be full of joy, hope, and peace. DeArdo’s life and reflections on mortality give a fresh voice to the traditional themes found in the Stations of the Cross. She offers you the courage to face your own suffering and concerns about death and to follow Jesus wherever he leads. You will discover: how memento mori can help you live a deeper spiritual life how to unite your sufferings with those of Jesus what the Catholic faith teaches about the meaning of suffering Station by station, DeArdo links her personal and spiritual journey to the suffering of Christ and shows readers how to do the same. Each chapter of Living Memento Mori begins with scripture, includes a quotation from Pope John Paul II’s Salvifici Doloris (The Christian Meaning of Human Suffering ), and closes with three questions for personal reflection or group discussion. An appendix provides readers with a guide to praying the Stations of the Cross with original meditations in the spirit of memento mori.

Book excerpt: When Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP, began keeping a ceramic skull on her desk and tweeting about it, she had no idea she'd be starting a movement. Her daily tweets about memento mori - Latin for "remember your death" -contained quotes and insights that have inspired others to remember death daily. Many have found this ancient practice to provide an important perspective on their lives in view of Jesus' call to repentance, conversion, and the hope of resurrection. And now Sr. Theresa Aletheia's series of tweets has led to a memento mori -inspired Lenten devotional. Each day contains a reflection written by Sr. Theresa Aletheia based on the liturgy of the day for all of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The devotional also includes a memento mori examen or review of the day, a daily moment of intercessory prayer, and daily reflections on death from the tradition, including the Church Fathers and many of the saints. Prompts are provided for journaling that can be used along with the Remember Your Death: Memento Mori Journal, also available from Pauline Books. Lent is a time when we remember the death of Christ and the sacrifice he made to give us eternal life. This devotional will help you to meditate on your own mortality and the incredible gift of salvation in preparation for Easter. Whether you get a skull for your desk, a memento mori journal, or a Lenten devotional, it is vitally important to the Christian life to remember the fragility of your life on earth-because one day you will die.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As Christians, we remember our death in order to remember our Life-Jesus Christ. We remember our death in order that our lives may be filled with the Life of Christ, both now and when we enter into the joy of eternal life." (Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP, from the Foreword) Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things is a beautiful prayer book that helps you pray with and meditate on death and the afterlife. Remembrance of the Last Things, beginning with death, opens our hearts to the work God wants to do in us before our last day on earth. Encouraged by Scripture and the saints, this ancient tradition can help you to manage the chaos of this world, grow closer to God, and focus on heaven. Sr. Theresa Alethia Noble, FSP, has taken the ancient custom of memento mori (remembering one's death) and modernized it for the 21st century. In this prayer book she has brought together the prayers, meditations, and readings that are most likely to help us in living our life and preparing for eternity, through the practice of remembering our death. The prayer book includes prayers for a good death, a Memento Mori Examen, Marian prayers for assistance in life and death, Spiritual Warfare prayers, the power of the Holy Rosary, and Prayers to live for heaven, and more. Truly helpful are the prayers that have been included to assist those who are dying and a section of Prayers for the Dead. We often don't know what to do-or say-when someone we care about is dying, or even when we think about our own deaths. Our culture has taught us to pretend death doesn't exist, and as a result we're bereft in more ways than one when we have to confront it. But it doesn't have to be that way. Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things will give you the words you've been looking for, will comfort you and help you comfort others, and will allow you the time to reflect on our nearness to God in these moments. Sr. Theresa Alethia Noble, FSP, has written a Memento Mori devotional, created a Memento Mori journal, and now brings us Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of Nabokov's Lolita, Humbert makes an honest admission: "[A]nd it struck me…that I simply did not know a thing about my darling's mind." That line sums up the isolate game of memorializing a deceased loved one, which is the basic tension in Nina's Memento Mori, an elegy to Mathias Freese's lost wife. The profound responsibility of answering the question "Who was Nina?" is left to the lone memoirist: I can say or write anything I want about her…There is much writerly power in that. I am the executor of her probate in all things now. She is mine now in ways she could not be when alive. I am the steward of her memory. Freese ends up analyzing himself, putting the "me" in "memento" and the "i" in "mori," thanks to ever-giving Nina posthumously providing a therapeutic mirror or "Rosebud," which Freese appropriates from Citizen Kane. But Freese mourns more over the burden of existence than over its loss. Appropriately, for Kane is not about the symbolic sled as much as it's about the cumulative snow that buries it.

This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,3, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: In my term paper, I will examine the narrative structure in “Memento“ which switches between chronological narration and reversed temporality. With respect to this unique narrative structure, I will take a closer look at the black-and-white and colour sequences, the opening sequence and the outstanding and resolvent scene 22/A, especially regarding the cinematography used. In the further course of my work, you will learn of the essential role of the unreliable narrator regarding my thesis and finally what impact the fabula construction in “Memento” has on his viewers. „Causes and their effects are basic to narrative, but they take place in time“. This quotation from Bordwell’s and Thompson’s work Film Art, an Introduction does not only show a fundamental principle of narration but furthermore depicts a possibility to manipulate the spectator’s understanding of a story. Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” is one example of what a complex narration can be. The film shows two separate stories of Leonard, an ex-insurance investigator who suffers anterograde amnesia and attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he can remember. On the one hand there is a forward moving storyline, the black-and-white scenes while the other one, the colour sequences, tells the story backwards. Although the story behind the film is rather simple, the narrative structure is extremely complex and clever, which demands constant attention from its spectators. This term paper will deal with the methods used in “Memento” which mislead the audience’s understanding of the story. My thesis is therefore: Narrative complexity in Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” – Narrative structure, Narrator’s unreliability, fabula construction and cinematography as key elements for the spectator’s manipulation. Apart from the film “Memento”, the central literature I will work with is the essay by Stefano Ghislotti “Narrative Comprehension Made Difficult: Film, Form and Mnemonic Devices in ‘Memento’”, the documentary “Anatomy of a Scene” about the making of “Memento”, a text by Andy Klein named "Everything You Wanted to Know about ‘Memento’” and different filmic narrativity by Jakob Lothe, David Herman and Edward Branigan. In addition to that, there is a self-generated sequence analysis attached to the term paper in order to have an overall view of the scenes I take a closer look at.
