Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania The school which now bears the title of University of Penn sylvania had been in existence, first as a simple academy and afterwards as a college, for nearly sixteen years, before a sys tem of medical instruction was admitted into its plan. This event may be considered as having taken place on the 3d of May, 1765 - the date at which the first medical professor was appointed. No school of medicine at that time existed in the country; and the College of Philadelphia undoubtedly deserves the credit of having opened this new path of liberal study in America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, From Its Foundation in 1765: With Sketches of the Lives of Deceased Professors Without detailing the numerous instances Of enterprise in this direction, or the circumstances attending their varied fortune, it will be pertinent to the subject Of present interest to state prominently the fact, that Of all the races who have been thus distinguished, not one has been more successful than that branch of the Teutonic stock from which we are lineally descended. Conqueror of the Roman Empire, and the legitimate inheritor of its glory, the race Of Teutons has sent its sons broadcast over the earth, and has its offshoots. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, for the Session 1850-1851, to the Alumni of the School The Faculty will be excused for this somewhat prolonged reference to their own concerns, when it is considered that these concerns, so far as they have hitherto Occupied our attention, are also those of the profession generally. They have no intention to set forth any peou liar advantages which the School may be supposed to possess. These, as well as the qualifications of the teachers, will be judged of by the impression they may make on others, rather than by the representa tions of the interested party. In conclusion, therefore, they have only to say, that, whatever may be thought of the Opportunities they have to offer, of this their friends may be assured, that their most zealous efforts will be directed to the improvement of the young men who may come under their tuition, and, through them, to the elevation of the profession of which they are to form a part. As extensive and radical changes had been made in the plan of medical teaching in that school, it seemed proper that a full statement should be given of the reasons for such reforms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of the Course of Chemical Instruction in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania: For the Use of His Pupils After some years' experience of the difficulties above mentioned, I came to the conclusion, that the time spent in the lecture room might be rendered much more profitable, if students could be previously apprized of the chain of ideas, or the apparatus and experiments, to be subjected to attention at each lecture; especially as the memory might afterwards be refreshed by the same means. In consequence of this conviction, the minutes of my course of instruction, were printed; and subse quently, a work comprising engravings and descriptions of the larger portion of such of my apparatus and expe riments, as could in this way be advantageously elucifipart of the students. To designate the portion of the work, respecting which, candidates for degrees will not be questioned, I have had it printed in a smaller type, excepting where it was too much blended with subjects of primary importance to be separated. I wish it how ever to be understood, that I shall expect attention to the parts thus distinguished, so far as they may be necessary to a comprehension of the rest. Thus, although I do not deem it to be a part of my duty to question a pupil on pneumatics, I shall expect him to understand the ih fluence of atmospheric pressure upon chemical pheno mena, and m pneumato -chemical operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Medical Education: The True Interest of the Public and the Profession; Two Addresses Delivered Before the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania on October 1, 1877, and October 2, 1898 The first of these Addresses was delivered at the opening of the one hundred and twelfth course of lectures in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. As extensive and radical changes had been made in the plan of medical teaching in that school, it seemed proper that a full statement should be given of the reasons for such reforms. An attempt was made, therefore, to present fairly the then position of medical teaching in America, to point out its chief defects, and to indicate the causes that had led to them, and the evils to which they in turn gave rise. The second Address was delivered sixteen years later, in October, 1893, at the opening of the Four Years' Course of Medical Study. It is hoped it may serve to indicate the advances effected in the interval, and also the lines along which farther progress should be made. In order to enable the accuracy of the statements in these Addresses to be tested, as well as to afford information which may be of value to those specially interested in this subject, brief synopses of the state of medical education in various countries in 1877 and in 1893 have been prepared. These are given in three Appendices. The first (No. I., pp. 44-69) is that originally compiled for the address of 1877. It was based upon data secured in response to a series of questions forwarded through the Department of State at Washington to the proper officials in the respective countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Considerations Preliminary to the Study of Medicine: Being the Introductory Address to the 124th Annual Session of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, Delivered October 1st, 1889 IT has not been unusual, of late, to disparage the introductory address, and there are those who would altogether omit it from the curriculum, as unprofitable, and as occupying time which were better spent in the regular exercises of the course. But when it is remembered that there are collected, on an occasion like this, nearly 500 young men, at least one-fourth of whom are present for the first time in official relation with their instructors in the profession of their choice, and most of whom are strangers in a great city, it is diflicult to conceive why an hour may not be profitably employed in the consideration of matters a knowledge of which may be useful and even important to them. I feel, therefore, that it is not the nature of the office so much as the shortcoming of the officer, not the introductory lecture, but the introductory lecturer, who is responsible if the hour prove un profitable. It will be my fault, therefore, if to-day this should be the case. In turn, I can but promise the effort which the choice of my colleagues and my wish to serve }ou demand of me, and it has seemed to me that I could perhaps best do so by bringing to your notice some considerations which I believe are appropriate in this preliminary stage of your studies. If, in so doing, I appear at times to address my remarks to those who are here {or the first time, I must ask the indulgence of the more ad vanced students who are not strangers among us. They may very properly hope to be entertained with something different from the discourses that have saturated and satiated them for the last three or four years, and that in this jubilant hour of their new departure they may be spared a disquisition on either the scien tific or the clinical aspects of medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement to Minutes of the Course of Chemical Instruction, in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania In short, as, in the analysis of the mineral kingdom, we de signate, as elementary, those substances which we cannot ana lyse further; so, in examining organic products, those sub stances which cannot be simplified, without destroying their most important characteristics, are to be viewed, as the elementary principles, by which the nature of compounds is to be understood and described. By the distillation of vegetable substances, they are easily resolved into their ultimate elements. These, I have said, are, for the most part, hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Some few vegetables, exhibit nitrogen as a constituent. The alka lies, and some of the earths, or their elements, besides still more minute portions of other matter, are also generally found in Vegetables. But, hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon, are, in quantity and importance, greatly predominant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
