Book excerpt: The history of "language teaching" is shot through with methods and approaches to language learning - most recently with "communicative language teaching" - but this book demonstrates that a more differentiated and richer understanding of learning a foreign language is both necessary and desirable. Languages and cultures are interlinked and interdependent and their teaching and learning should be too. Learning another language is part of a complex process of learning and understanding other people's ways of life, ways of thinking and socio-economic experience

Book excerpt: This project attempts to tackle several challenges: - to experience the variety of different teaching cultures as a source of innovation rather than as an obstacle; - to adopt a pluridisciplinary approach by introducing references taken from the social sciences in order to develop reflection on the role of languages in social cohesion; - to try and provide answers to a question hitherto rarely raised in the didactics of languages and cultures, namely the place of cultural mediation itself. Book excerpt: Language teachers are key figures in preparing young people for participation in an increasingly multilingual and culturally diverse world, yet little is known about how they go about this in practice. This book uses examples of classroom interaction to reveal how teachers of languages act as intercultural mediators and the implications of this for practice. To date, there has been little exploration of how teachers mediate language and culture learning from an intercultural perspective, and what underlies their mediation practices in terms of their conceptions of intercultural language teaching and learning. This book offers an account of what teachers are thinking, feeling and doing as they enact an intercultural perspective on language teaching and learning.

Book excerpt: This book analyses an intercultural project undertaken by French and English 14-year-olds based on an exchange of materials created by the pupils and focused on the topic of law and order. The project was based on a view of learning as a dialogic process interacting with others. A first language and home culture is acquired through such interaction. This project sought to realise this dialogic process in a more meaningful way than is often the case in foreign language classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it is bilingualism that transfers information and ideas from culture to culture, it is the translator who systematizes and generalizes this process. The translator serves as a mediator of cultures. In this collection of essays, based on a conference held at the University of Hartford, a group of individuals – professional translators, linguists, and literary scholars – exchange their views on translation and its power to influence literary traditions and to shape cultural and economic identities. The authors explore the implications of their views on the theory and craft of translation, both written and oral, in an era of unsettling globalizing forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the "intercultural perspective" on foreign language education. From this viewpoint, the focus of language learning is redefined in terms of intercultural rather than communicative competence. Internet-mediation is a praxiological reflex of this conceptual shift in that it affords the embedding of foreign language learning and instruction in the sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts of language use and development in the form of classroom-based intercultural collaborations between internationally dispersed representatives of the languacultures under study. The contributions to the volume examine the pedagogy, processes, and outcomes of NS-NNS Internet-mediated language and culture learning partnerships in French, German, Spanish, EFL, and Russian from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, including model learning, reflective practice, learner corpus analysis, cultural studies, ethnography, interactionism, and critical theory. Internet-mediated Intercultural Foreign Language Education represents the 2005 volume of the annual series Issues in Language Program Direction sponsored by the American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators of Foreign Language Programs under the editorship of Sally Magnan.

Book excerpt: As the 21st century gets into stride so does the call for a discipline combining culture and translation. This second edition of Translating Cultures retains its original aim of putting some rigour and coherence into these fashionable words and lays the foundation for such a discipline. This edition has not only been thoroughly revised, but it has also been expanded. In particular, a new chapter has been added which focuses specifically on training translators for translational and intercultural competencies. The core of the book provides a model for teaching culture to translators, interpreters and other mediators. It introduces the reader to current understanding about culture and aims to raise awareness of the fundamental role of culture in constructing, perceiving and translating reality. Culture is perceived throughout as a system for orienting experience, and a basic presupposition is that the organization of experience is not 'reality', but rather a simplified model and a 'distortion' which varies from culture to culture. Each culture acts as a frame within which external signs or 'reality' are interpreted. The approach is interdisciplinary, taking ideas from contemporary translation theory, anthropology, Bateson's logical typing and metamessage theories, Bandler and Grinder's NLP meta-model theory, and Hallidayan functional grammar. Authentic texts and translations are offered to illustrate the various strategies that a cultural mediator can adopt in order to make the different cultural frames he or she is mediating between more explicit.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to the growing field of foreign language teaching and testing by shedding light on mediation between languages. Stathopoulou offers an empirically-grounded definition of mediation as a form of translanguaging and offers tools and methods for further research in multilingual testing. The book explores what cross-language mediation entails, what processes and strategies are involved, and the challenges often faced by mediators. As well as stressing the importance of administering tests which favour cross-language mediation practices, the author encourages the implementation of language programmes which promote the mingling-of-languages idea and target the development of language learners’ effective translanguaging practices. Researchers studying translanguaging, multilingualism, multilingual testing and the use of mother tongue in the foreign language classroom will all find this book of interest.

This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vision of this book has been to represent the work of educators and scholars invested in moving education beyond insular models of language study and cultural awareness to more globally representative and inclusive interactions that range from the studied word to the lived experience, and from reading the word to read the world (Freire & Macedo, 1987). A fundamental aspect of this vision is to recognize the living nature of language and its intricate role in culture. Culture is mediated through language (Hauerwas, Skawinski, & Ryan, 2017, p. 202) and the linguistic experience of difference is essential for developing cultural competence beyond surface culture considerations. The editors of this volume are committed to a closer bond between literacy learning and cultural competencies, particularly when literacy practices and education are often characterized by quantifiable standards and accountability restraints. Readers of this volume will find meaningful and practical approaches to engage with learners from their earliest encounter with language(s), through adolescence and adulthood, and across ever-changing local and global communities.

Book excerpt: Virtual Exchange (VE) is of great import to language and culture teachers and researchers but is also gaining popularity in other fields. However, around the world and in the Asia-Pacific region in particular, the number of exchanges is not high and the quality of those that exist needs to continue to improve. It is essential that the latest research and best practice can be disseminated to ensure VE develops further. In this edited volume, various researchers and practitioners provide firsthand perspectives, well-researched accounts of current situations, ideas for future exchanges, and areas in need of further development. We hope it will be of use to the VE practitioner and researcher alike.
