Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early baseball in Richmond, Virginia, was very much about business. The game was a means of promoting Richmond and its various industries and attractions, but it was plagued by instability. Competing interests fought for control of its fortunes in the city and changes in team ownership were frequent. The competitors vied to make a profit in any way they could on the game. As time passed, baseball became more established and eventually found its place in the city. Richmond's affiliation with baseball, from the years 1884 to 2000, is a fascinating story. The book covers the players and owners, and also for nearly twelve decades the relationship shared by the team and the city. It highlights baseball's early amateur beginnings in Richmond prior to 1884, the first year of professional baseball in the city in 1884, the revival of the Virginia State League from 1906 to 1914, the Virginia League from 1918 to 1928 and the Eastern League in 1931 and 1932, the Richmond Colts and the Piedmont League from 1933 to 1953, and Richmond's association with the International League beginning in 1954.

Book excerpt: Mass media has become an integral part of the human experience. News travels around the world in a split second affecting people in other countries in untold ways. Although being on top of the news may be good, at least for news junkies, mass media also transmits values or the lack thereof, condenses complex events and thoughts to simplified sound bites and often ignores the essence of an event or story. The selective bibliography gathers the books and magazine literature over the previous ten years while providing access through author, title and subject indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport Public Relations: Managing Organizational Communication, Second Edition, takes a comprehensive, businesslike approach to the practice of public relations in sport. Rather than address public relations only as a means of supporting the marketing function or leveraging the media’s interest in an event or organization, this text recognizes public relations as a function that is integral to many aspects of a sport organization’s goals. The book covers all aspects of public relations, starting with the foundations of PR in sport and progressing all the way through legal and ethical issues that sport public relations professionals encounter. The second edition has been reorganized to better emphasize new opportunities for sport organizations to directly engage the masses and function as their own media. Following are some of the exciting updates to this edition: • Discussion of social media and other e-technologies now permeates the entire book rather than being limited to a single chapter. • Updated chapters on new media, corporate social responsibility, and legal and ethical issues reflect areas of growing emphasis and concern for sport organizations. • New “Insight From a Professional” and other sidebars offer readers a firsthand account of the roles of PR professionals in today’s sport environment. • A complete set of ancillaries helps instructors incorporate e-technology into their courses and prepare engaging class discussions. In a clear and engaging style, Sport Public Relations, Second Edition, expresses the roles of public relations and PR professionals as vital components to a sport organization’s overall management. Updated tools including sample media releases, credentials letters, and media guides provide students with tangible examples of the work that PR professionals produce. Special elements throughout the text teach students what sport communication work is like, the tasks and dilemmas practitioners face, and available opportunities and careers in the industry. Real-life examples and historical events demonstrate how sport communication has evolved and the vital role it plays in effective sport management. Chapter objectives, key terms, summaries, and learning activities keep students focused on key topics and allow them to better prepare for course projects and class discussion. Sport Public Relations, Second Edition, provides the theoretical basis for industry practice as well as guidance on applying those concepts. Readers will learn about the history of sport public relations and how it is evolving; the foundations for effective media relations in sport, including information services and organization media; and the critical need for a crisis communication plan and management considerations. Readers will also consider the diverse forms of public relations practice, encompassing media, community, employee, investor, customer, donor, and government relations. With this text, both students and professionals will understand the full range of functions in the realm of sport public relations and how to be progressive in their current and future public relations practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John McDonnell began his coaching career at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville--choosing it over Norman, Oklahoma, because Fayetteville reminded him of his native Ireland--he could hardly have imagined that he would become the most successful coach in the history of American collegiate athletics. But, in thirty-six years at the university, he amassed a staggering résumé of accomplishments, including forty national championships (eleven cross country, nineteen indoor track, and ten outdoor track), the most by any coach in any sport in NCAA history. His teams at Arkansas won the triple crown (a championship in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in a single school year) a record five times. The Razorbacks also won eighty-three conference championships (thirty-eight in the Southwest Conference and forty-six in the Southeastern Conference), including thirty-four consecutive conference championships in cross country from 1974 to 2008. McDonnell coached 185 All-Americans, fifty-four individual national champions, and twenty-three Olympians. And from 1984 to 1995, his Razorback teams won twelve consecutive NCAA Indoor Track Championships, the longest streak of national titles by any school in any sport in NCAA history. This biography tells the story of the McDonnell's life and legacy, from his childhood growing up on a farm in 1940s County Mayo, Ireland, to his own running career, to the beginnings of his life as a coach, to all the great athletes he mentored along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How often do we hear that Americans are so ignorant about politics that their civic competence is impaired, and that the media are to blame because they do a dismal job of informing the public? Processing Politics shows that average Americans are far smarter than the critics believe. Integrating a broad range of current research on how people learn (from political science, social psychology, communication, physiology, and artificial intelligence), Doris Graber shows that televised presentations—at their best—actually excel at transmitting information and facilitating learning. She critiques current political offerings in terms of their compatibility with our learning capacities and interests, and she considers the obstacles, both economic and political, that affect the content we receive on the air, on cable, or on the Internet. More and more people rely on information from television and the Internet to make important decisions. Processing Politics offers a sound, well-researched defense of these remarkably versatile media, and challenges us to make them work for us in our democracy.

Blending U.S. and California history as a backdrop to a narrative rich with anecdotes, The Golden Game reveals the significant impact that California has had on baseball history. Written not just for Californians but for all baseball fans, The Golden Game goes beyond its geographic boundaries to tell the fascinating saga of California baseball and how it has indelibly shaped the national pastime.

Book excerpt: This book examines how women journalists in Malaysia negotiated male power structures, in particular structures determined by the keystone party of the ruling coalition, the United Malays National Organisation. Through both oral histories and content analysis, it looks at how women journalists in the women’s pages of the newspapers found spaces to advocate for their readers. It is thus the first work to look at the importance of the women’s pages in the Malay-language newspapers, and how apparently monolithic institutions of the authoritarian state hid diverse contests for resources and prestige. In this contest, the concept of news values, the perception of the reader and the ways in which women constructed themselves as journalists all come into play, and are examined here. The book contributes to the field of feminist media studies by examining how gendered newsroom practices paradoxically allowed women journalists in the women’s pages more editorial freedom than those in the malestream press.
