Chapter 3 gives formulae for fabrication times and costs. Chapters 4 deals with beams and columns. Summarizes the Eurocode rules for design. Chapter 5 deals with the design of tubular trusses. Chapter 6 gives the design of frame structures and fire-resistant design rules for a frame. In Chapters 7 some minimum cost design problems of stiffened and cellular plates and shells are worked out for cases of different stiffenings and loads. Book excerpt: This topical book contains the latest scientific and engineering developments in the field of tubular steel structures, as presented at the "11th International Symposium and IIW International Conference on Tubular Structures". The International Symposium on Tubular Structures (ISTS) has a long-standing reputation for being the principal showcase for manufactured tubing and the prime international forum for discussion of research, developments and applications in this field. Various key and emerging subjects in the field of hollow structural sections are covered, such as: novel applications and case studies, static and fatigue behaviour of connections/joints, concrete-filled and composite tubular members, earthquake resistance, specification and code developments, material properties and structural reliability, impact resistance and brittle fracture, fire resistance, casting and fabrication innovations. Research and development issues presented in this book are applicable to buildings, bridges, offshore structures, entertainment rides, cranes, towers and various mechanical and agricultural equipment. This book is thus a pertinent reference source for architects, civil and mechanical engineers, designers, steel fabricators and contractors, manufacturers of hollow sections or related construction products, trade associations involved with tubing, owners or developers of tubular structures, steel specification committees, academics and research students. The conference presentations herein include two keynote lectures (the International Institute of Welding Houdremont Lecture and the ISTS Kurobane Lecture), plus finalists in the CIDECT Student Papers Competition. The 11th International Symposium and IIW International Conference on Tubular Structures – ISTS11 – took place in Québec City, Canada from August 31 to September 2, 2006.

Book excerpt: Although tubular structures are reasonably well understood by designers of offshore platforms, onshore applications often suffer from "learning curve" problems, particularly in the connections, tending to inhibit the wider use of tubes. This book was written primarily to help this situation. Representing 25 years of work by one of the pioneers in the field of tubular structures, the book covers research, synthesis of design criteria, and successful application to the practical design, construction, inspection, and lifetime monitoring of major structures. Written by the principal author of the AWS D1.1 Code Provisions for Tubular Structures this book is intended to be used in conjunction with the AWS Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.1-88 published by the American Welding Society, Miami, FL, USA. Users of this Code, writers of other codes, students and researchers alike will find it an indispensable source of background material in their work with tubular structures.

Book excerpt: Structural Mechanics and Design of Metal Pipes: A systematic approach for onshore and offshore pipelines presents a unified and systematic approach to understanding and analyzing the structural behavior of onshore and offshore metallic pipelines. Following an overview of pipeline engineering and pipe fabrication, the mechanics of elastic rings and cylinders is presented as a prelude to structural performance of metal pipes under various loading conditions, which involve pressure and structural loads. The book also discusses special topics, such as geohazards and strain-based design, large-diameter water pipelines, global buckling and mechanically-lined pipes, and outlines approaches for developing state-of-the-art finite element models. In all topics addressed in this book, the mechanical behavior of pipes is related with specific design methods for onshore and offshore pipelines. Reflects the author’s 30-year experience in structural mechanics of pipes and tubulars Describes the structural performance of onshore and offshore pipelines Addresses key features of pipe mechanics to both practicing engineers and researchers Covers a wide spectrum of pipe behavior from the pipe mill to service conditions Presents the background of structural design provisions in major pipeline standards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for classroom teaching in architectural and civil engineering at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Although it has been developed from lecture notes given in structural steel design, it can be useful to practicing engineers. Many of the examples presented in this book are drawn from the field of design of structures. Design of Steel Structures can be used for one or two semesters of three hours each on the undergraduate level. For a two-semester curriculum, Chapters 1 through 8 can be used during the first semester. Heavy emphasis should be placed on Chapters 1 through 5, giving the student a brief exposure to the consideration of wind and earthquakes in the design of buildings. With the new federal requirements vis a vis wind and earthquake hazards, it is beneficial to the student to have some under standing of the underlying concepts in this field. In addition to the class lectures, the instructor should require the student to submit a term project that includes the complete structural design of a multi-story building using standard design procedures as specified by AISC Specifications. Thus, the use of the AISC Steel Construction Manual is a must in teaching this course. In the second semester, Chapters 9 through 13 should be covered. At the undergraduate level, Chapters 11 through 13 should be used on a limited basis, leaving the student more time to concentrate on composite construction and built-up girders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on concrete-filled steel tubular structures formed by placing concrete inside the steel tube. It deals with the mechanical essence of concrete-filled steel tubular members in compression/tension, bending, torsion, shear and the combined effects, the working mechanism of concrete-filled steel tubular members under long-term load, cyclic load, fire exposure and post-fire exposure, and proposes practical design methods based on experimental and theoretical studies and parametric analysis. The content addresses some key technical issues of concrete-filled steel tubular members, such as the mechanical properties of steel and core concrete, the shrinkage and creep of core concrete, the bonding behavior between steel tube and core concrete, the limiting values for the initial stress of steel tube caused by construction load and the void of core concrete, the protective design of concrete-filled steel tubular members under chloride corrosive environment and impact loading, etc. This textbook also discusses the technology and design principles of concrete-filled steel tubular hybrid structures.
