Book excerpt: This report documents the experimental findings from a study of critical heat flux, pressure drop and post-dryout behaviour in a 6-m, 37 element fully segmented candu-type simulated fuel string. the electrically heated bundle with a skewed non-uniform axial flux profile and radial flux depression was tested in the u-1 out reactor loop in a horizontal attitude with light water coolant. a total of 99 chf points and an extensive amount of post-chf data were collected over the following range of conditions: inlet pressure...7.12 - 11.74 mpa, mass flux...1.20 - 4.70 mg.m sup(-2)s sup(-1), inlet subcooling...100 - 590 kj.kg sup(-1) , dryout quality...1.6 - 38 percent. the chf results obtained are presented on a system parameter basis (using either inlet temperature or inlet subcooling) and local conditions basis (using cross-sectional average quality at the dryout location). in either case the trends observed were found to be consistent with previous water chf data obtained on uniformly heated 6-m and 3-m test sections. differences were in the magnitude of the dryout power and chf for the cosine bundle (always lower) and in the preferential axial dryout location which was just upstream of the mid-bundle spacer plane of bundle j or k rather than just upstream of the end-plate at the end of the heated length. the chf data has been correlated for both light and heavy water based on system parameters and local conditions. the rms errors for both the light and heavy water correlations varied from 4.3 percent for the system parameters correlation based on inlet subcooling to 7.5 percent for the local conditions correlations. also presented is a method, developed from the extensive post-chf data obtained, to predict the upper bound maximum sheath temperature.

Book excerpt: Horizontal critical heat flux tests were conducted on a 37-element assembly with a heated length of 5.5 metres in the mr-3 freon heat transfer loop at crnl. the bundle cross section and radial heat flux profile represented bruce generating station fuel. the axial heat flux profile was uniform and a typical bundle junction was positioned 0.5 metres upstream of the downstream end of the heated length. test conditions covered water equivalent pressures from 1200 to 1585 psia, mass fluxes from 2 to 5 million lb/h.ft sup(2), and inlet subcoolings from 40 to 250 btu/lb. chf correlations have been fitted to the data. the initial critical heat flux condition was usually detected in the upper portion of the assembly, indicating the presence of a gravitational effect. however, the freon/water chf modelling techniques employed here were developed strictly for vertical test sections and have not been validated for horizontal test sections. downstream of the bundle junction chf was significantly higher than upstream, indicating a bundle junction effect. unfortunately, because the present string contained only one junction, no definite conclusion whether the junction depressed upstream chf or enhanced downstream chf can be drawn. however, an analysis of the test results suggests that the effect of the junction is to enhance downstream chf, so that additional junctions may have enhanced the chf performance of the string. further experiments are planned to test this postulation. a misalignment of 12 degrees at the bundle junction generally resulted in an increase in downstream chf at high coolant mass flux (5 x 10 sup(6) lb/hrft sup(2)) and a minimal effect at lower coolant flow rates.
