Book excerpt: Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena, Second Edition serves as an introduction to the phenomena of ultra short laser pulses and describes how this technology can be used to examine problems in areas such as electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena combines theoretical backgrounds and experimental techniques and will serve as a manual on designing and constructing femtosecond ("faster than electronics") systems or experiments from scratch. Beyond the simple optical system, the various sources of ultrashort pulses are presented, again with emphasis on the basic concepts and how they apply to the design of particular sources (dye lasers, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, and sources based on frequency conversion). Provides an easy to follow guide through "faster than electronics" probing and detection methods THE manual on designing and constructing femtosecond systems and experiments Discusses essential technology for applications in micro-machining, femtochemistry, and medical imaging

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we address specific efforts towards developing the precise aspect of ultrashort laser pulse measurement in the context of biomedical research. The motivation for pursuing these new developments was triggered by the vision of developing fundamental tools that will enable to control matter by means of light with exquisite precision with the added difficulty of being next to biological samples which are extremely sensitive and fragile. For this, light matter interaction needs to be extremely well controlled to avoid undesired effects, like cell damage due to the high peak intensity values of ultrashort laser pulses, as well as promoting specific physical processes like two-photon fluorescence excitation of a desired fluorophore embedded in some biochemical environment. We focus in the two major bottlenecks regarding ultrashort laser pulse measurements for multiphoton microscopy, that aim for developing (1) new techniques for full characterization of ultrashort pulses under different experimental conditions and (2) new material with specific nonlinear properties that enable to obtain ultrashort pulse measurements that properly catch the temporal shape of light and at the same time can be readily found in biomedical lab, specially cost effective, non fragile and non-toxic. Combination of these two complementary strategies provides a new ground where it is possible to characterise an ultrashort pulse at the sample plane of a multiphoton microscope in a regular biomedical research facility. Importantly, we approach ultrashort pulse characterisation by developing a different theoretical framework to the state-of-the-art and we propose few initial experiments that preliminary support our theoretical statements in the form of new optical techniques. These findings are then experimentally tested under different conditions, such different optical setups and different pulsed regimes in order to evaluate the feasibility of the tools to measure ultrashort pulses in conditions that were prohibitive at the time this thesis was started. The scope of this thesis outlines the potential of such techniques, but further efforts shall be addressed to assess feasibility, robustness and further limitations.

Book excerpt: This book discusses aspects of laser pulses generation, characterization, and practical applications. Some new achievements in theory, experiments, and design are demonstrated. The introductive chapter shortly overviews the physical principles of pulsed lasers operation with pulse durations from seconds to yoctoseconds. A theory of mode-locking, based on the optical noise concept, is discussed. With this approximation, all paradoxes of ultrashort laser pulse formation have been explained. The book includes examples of very delicate laser operation in biomedical areas and extremely high power systems used for material processing and water purification. We hope this book will be useful for engineers and managers, for professors and students, and for those who are interested in laser science and technologies.

Book excerpt: In this contribution some basic properties of femtosecond laser pulse are summarized. In sections 2.1,Äì2.5 the generation of femtosecond laser pulses via mode locking is described in simple physical terms. In section 2.6 we deal with measurement of ultrashort laser pulses. The characterization of ultrashort pulses with respect to amplitude and phase is therefore based on optical correlation techniques that make of the short pulse itself. In section 3 we start with the linear properties of ultrashort light pulses. However, due to the large bandwidth, the linear dispersion is responsible for dramatic effects. To describe and manage such dispersion effects a mathematical description of an ultrashort laser pulse is given first before we continue with methods how to change the temporal shape via the frequency domain. The chapter ends with a paragraph of the wavelet representation of an ultrashort laser pulse.

Book excerpt: The propagation of ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses in linear dielectric materials is determined in the time, space, and frequency domains by linear Maxwell optics through dispersion and diffraction. For intense pulses, pulse propagation is additionally modified by nonlinearities in the medium such as the optical Kerr effect, plasma generation, and self-phase modulation. In this work we report the results of several experiments on the propagation of ultrashort pulses. In the linear regime, we characterize the temporal evolution of an ultrashort pulse during propagation through a linear dielectric under anomalous dispersion. Under these conditions the pulse evolution departs from the group velocity and group delay dispersion approximations, which leads to the formation of optical precursors. We describe an experiment which observes the propagation of optical precursors in a bulk condensed-matter dielectric. We generate ultrashort laser pulses and propagate the pulses through a bulk dye with an absorption resonance turned to the center wavelength of the femotsecond pulse. The pulse is then characterized in the time domain before and after propagation. Through numerical simulation we verify that the behavior of the precursors in the temporal pulse profille corresponds with the classical model. Under very high intensity laser pulses, the nonlinearities induced by the propagation of the intense ultrashort pulse produce changes in the complex refractive index of the nonlinear material. We report the results of experiments involving time-resolved imaging of the propagation of ultrashort pulses in dielectric materials. We experimentally observe and characterize these effects through a weak-probe imaging effect which directly measures the nonlinearity in a time-resolved manner. In these experiments an intense femtosecond laser pulse is propagated in a nonlinear intensity regime while an unfocused low-intensity femtosecond pulse is used as to probe the nonlinear pulse. We use this technique to characterize femtosecond pulses in air and liquid, especially in the regime of optical filamentation. We subsequently calculate parameters such as the plasma density, the transverse extent, and the instantaneous refractive index within the femtosecond laser fillament under conditions which are not accessible through most standard pulse measurement techniqes. Book excerpt: High Speed Pulse Technology: Volume II: Optical Pulses - Lasers - Measuring Techniques focuses on the theoretical and engineering problems that result from the capacitor discharge technique. This book is organized into three main topics: light flash production from a capacitive energy storage; signal transmission and ranging systems by capacitor discharges and lasers; and impulse measuring technique. This text specifically discusses the air spark under atmospheric conditions, industrial equipment for laser flashing, and claims for light transmitting system. The application of light impulse signal transmission, impulse measurements by means of spark gaps, and conversion factors of various energy units are also described. This publication is recommended for eager electrical engineering and physics students interested in optical pulses, lasers, and measuring techniques.
