Book Synopsis Mañana Doesnt Mean Tomorrow by : David Kindopp
Download or read book Mañana Doesnt Mean Tomorrow written by David Kindopp and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-10-13 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unbelievably, ridiculously, painfully, delightfully true sailing, land and love adventure in Mexico. Imagine Jimmy Buffett as the first mate, Dr. Wayne Dyer as the cook, Ernest Hemingway the helmsman and Jack London as the navigator and you get a pretty good idea about the crew in the author's head who helped shape this adventure. And they all get their share of the story. David owned and operated a real estate brokerage for many years in Northern California. Learning to sail on San Francisco Bay and visiting Mexico he soon discovered it was a combination he could not resist. During a visit to Mazatlan he determined he would chuck his brokerage life in California, bring a sail boat to that beach town and try his hand at the charter business. Sacrificing home and hearth and "security" at the altar of a mid-life Mexican dream cost him his business and marriage. Undeterred, he found a vintage ketch, made it ready for the ocean, and cast off. Come join the odyssey of sailing to Mazatlan -- dealing with Mexican "partners" negotiating tourist ladies, expats, the federales (almost being thrown into a Mexican jail), laughter, lust, love and the adventure of a lifetime.

Download or read book Beyond Paradise written by André Soares and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-04-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Latin American actor to become a superstar, Ramon Novarro was for years one of Hollywood's top actors. Born Ramon Samaniego to a prominent Mexican family, he arrived in America in 1916, a refugee from civil wars. By the mid-1920s, he had become one of MGM's biggest box office attractions, starring in now-classic films, including The Student Prince, Mata Hari, and the original version of Ben-Hur. He shared the screen with the era's top leading ladies, such as Greta Garbo, Myrna Loy, Joan Crawford, and Norma Shearer, and he became Rudolph Valentino's main rival in the “Latin Lover” category. Yet, despite his considerable professional accomplishments, Novarro's enduring hold on fame stems from his tragic death—his bloodied corpse was found in his house on Halloween 1968 in what has become one of Hollywood's most infamous scandals. A lifelong bachelor, Novarro carefully cultivated his image as a man deeply devoted to his family and to Catholicism. His murder shattered that persona. News reports revealed that the dashing screen hero had not only been gay, but he was dead at the hands of two young, male hustlers. Since then, details of his murder have achieved near mythic proportions, obscuring Novarro's professional legacy. Beyond Paradise presents a full picture of the man who made motion picture history. Including original interviews with Novarro's surviving friends, family, coworkers, and the two men convicted of his murder, this biography provides unique insights into an early Hollywood star—a man whose heart was forever in conflict with his image and whose myth continues to fascinate today.

Book Synopsis Negotiating Paradise by : Dennis Merrill
Download or read book Negotiating Paradise written by Dennis Merrill and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounts of U.S. empire building in Latin America typically portray politically and economically powerful North Americans descending on their southerly neighbors to engage in lopsided negotiations. Dennis Merrill's comparative history of U.S. tourism in Latin America in the twentieth century demonstrates that empire is a more textured, variable, and interactive system of inequality and resistance than commonly assumed. In his examination of interwar Mexico, early Cold War Cuba, and Puerto Rico during the Alliance for Progress, Merrill demonstrates how tourists and the international travel industry facilitated the expansion of U.S. consumer and cultural power in Latin America. He also shows the many ways in which local service workers, labor unions, business interests, and host governments vied to manage the Yankee invasion. While national leaders negotiated treaties and military occupations, visitors and hosts navigated interracial encounters in bars and brothels, confronted clashing notions of gender and sexuality at beachside resorts, and negotiated national identities. Highlighting the everyday realities of U.S. empire in ways often overlooked, Merrill's analysis provides historical context for understanding the contemporary debate over the costs and benefits of globalization.
Download or read book Duke written by Ronald L. Davis and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost two decades after his death, John Wayne is still America’s favorite movie star. More than an actor, Wayne is a cultural icon whose stature seems to grow with the passage of time. In this illuminating biography, Ronald L. Davis focuses on Wayne’s human side, portraying a complex personality defined by frailty and insecurity as well as by courage and strength. Davis traces Wayne’s story from its beginnings in Winterset, Iowa, to his death in 1979. This is not a story of instant fame: only after a decade in budget westerns did Wayne receive serious consideration, for his performance in John Ford’s 1939 film Stagecoach. From that point on, his skills and popularity grew as he appeared in such classics as Fort Apache, Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searches, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, and True Grit. A man’s ideal more than a woman’s, Wayne earned his popularity without becoming either a great actor or a sex symbol. In all his films, whatever the character, John Wayne portrayed John Wayne, a persona he created for himself: the tough, gritty loner whose mission was to uphold the frontier’s--and the nation’s--traditional values. To depict the different facets of Wayne’s life and career, Davis draws on a range of primary and secondary sources, most notably exclusive interviews with the people who knew Wayne well, including the actor’s costar Maureen O’Hara and his widow, Pilar Wayne. The result is a well-balanced, highly engaging portrait of a man whose private identity was eventually overshadowed by his screen persona--until he came to represent America itself.
