Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mayfield Bunny, the new novel by Herbert Feldman, author of Broken Record, is the story of an obsessional search, architected in fantasy and self-delusion. The novels protagonist, Dr. Egon Chernel, has dedicated his unruly, anarchic life to the elimination of human blindness on Planet Earth: Chernels astonishing scientific miracle, source of a certain Nobel Prize, depends upon his uncovering and interviewing Mayfield Bunny, a being of unknown species and image. Chernel gathers a small band of followers, needy individuals, in search of their own slot in society, around him. Chernel, chosen as savior of the sightless, tyrannically drives his disciples through his fanatical, lunatic hunt for his Holy Grail, Mayfield Bunny. Mayfield Bunny is absurd, surreal, but the book is, ultimately, a tragic rendering of the lethal price one pays for a life lived in fantasy and uncompromising delusion. You wont easily forget Egon Chernel and his acolytes in their quest for the mystery and essence of Mayfield Bunny.

Book excerpt: Set in the late 1970s, shortly before the advent of the AIDS epidemic, an era still redolent of Vietnam and Watergate, Broken Record represents one man’s crossing through a transitional period in the nation’s history, as delineated in the madness of New York, when the city was infested with crime and unbridled sexuality. During this sordid and thrilling epoch in the city, Bobby Cahn, an underemployed man of 35 learns that the chronic stomach pains that have tormented him for a decade are not the stuff of hypochondria, but the lethal messiness of cancer. A large section of the book takes place in the hospital, The Gosmomberger Pavilion, where Bobby encounters doctors and staff that include, among others, a surgeon who extracts healthy pancreases that are subsequently employed in the preparation of gourmet dishes highlighting the organ, a sadistic aide, capable of committing mayhem on patients he finds annoying, and a nymphomaniac who seduces the dying. The tone of Broken Record is sardonic, reflecting damaged humanity, and a debauched, vacated society, but the mordant pitch of the novel cannot mask the grief and tragedy that mark the stations of Bobby’s passage; indeed the ineluctability of Bobby’s final reckoning proves that all men are Everyman--and that the demise of any single human being, even those who appear worthless and indecent in their lack of regard for others, brings universal mourning. Readers will not easily forget Bobby Cahn and the population of Broken Record.

Book excerpt: 3 Weddings & a Secret Welcome to Sweetbranch, Alabama. Folks are friendly, children are safe and down-home hospitality abounds. Once in a while, though, things are not quite what they seem… There was no peace on earth when Addy got mad. Danny Mayfield loved his wife, but Addy had a penchant for stray children that strained his budget—and his patience—to the limit. When she told him that yet another homeless child was moving in—for a total of seven—Danny told her he was moving out. Gabrielle was a fetching child, though. You could even say angelic. And good things happened when she was around. But Addy was still mad, so when the town siren made it clear that she had a real good disposition, why on earth was Danny thinking about his wife—and the kids?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination dictionary and annotated discography, videography and bibliography, this sourcebook brings together listings of materials on the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. . . . This sourcebook serves as a good introduction to Rastafari and reggae. Reference Books Bulletin Coinciding with the sixtieth anniversary of Rastafari, this reference book traces the relationship between two intertwined aspects of Jamaican culture: Rastafari and reggae music. As important voices in the ongoing dialogue concerning Jamaica's search for a national identity, Rastafari and reggae have had a significant impact on international music and culture. This work is the first to document and describe these areas for researchers, providing a comprehensive dictionary of terms, people, places, and concepts relevant to Rastafari, reggae music, and their related histories. In a unique collaboration from the American and Jamaican perspectives, Mulvaney and Nelson have supplied annotated references and cross references for written materials, audio recordings, videocassettes, and films that cover the first sixty years of Rastafari and over twenty years of reggae music. The book is comprised of four main sections. The dictionary serves as the focal point for the cross referencing of the entire book and offers entries that are either directly related to Rastafari and reggae or provide a historical context. The discography, which includes 200 entries, represents a cross section of reggae music from 1968 to 1990 and is organized by musician or band name. A small, representative sample of documentary, concert, and narrative fiction videocassettes that address aspects of Rastafari or reggae music are catalogued in the videography, along with selected films. Finally, the bibliography, prepared by Carlos I.H. Nelson, provides a thorough overview of journal and magazine articles, creative works, dissertations, books, interviews, parts of books, reviews, and theses written by and about Rastafarians and reggae musicians. It covers the past importance, present significance, and future legacies of the movement and the music. The work also includes two appendices that list relevant periodicals and representative musicians and bands. Music students and researchers will find Rastafari and Reggae to be a valuable reference source, as will students in Caribbean and cultural studies, communication, history, and anthropology courses. For academic, public, and music library collections, the book will be an important addition.

Book excerpt: In this anthology, uncover a century of dark mystery stories set in America’s mighty capital. Akashic Books continues its award-winning series of city-based noir anthologies launched in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir. Each book is compromised of stories set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city in the book. The original D.C. Noir, a groundbreaking collection of new fiction by sixteen different writers, displayed the curatorial prowess of bestselling author George Pelecanos. In D.C. Noir 2: The Classics, Pelecanos once again assembles an enchanting array of dark and subversive stories, this time selecting the very best of Washington’s historical literary legacy. Classic reprints from: Edward P. Jones, George Pelecanos, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, James Grady, Julian Mayfield, Marita Golden, Elizabeth Hand, Julian Mazor, Ward Just, Jean Toomer, Roach Brown, Larry Neal, and others. Praise for D.C. Noir 2 “By broadly interpreting what constitutes noir, Pelecanos has been able to include writers as diverse as Langston Hughes and Ward Just in this high-quality reprint anthology. In his introduction, Pelecanos describes his vision of “a century-long overview of D.C. fiction that would focus on issues of race, ethnicity, politics, class, and the attendant struggles and changes that occurred in various eras of our history.” —Publishers Weekly
