Book excerpt: Max Liebermann (1847-1935), The leading artist in Germany from the early 1890s until the Nazi takeover in 1933, was known later in his career for his singular approach to Impressionism. Initially a realist painter, his work at times moved into the more abstract realm of "pure painting," which earned him the moniker, "Manet of the Germans." Liebermann, a self-assured cultural leader And The descendent of a successful German-Jewish family, was a celebrity in his own day. He was president of the Berlin Secession from 1898 until 1910 and, during the Weimar Republic served as president of the Prussian Academy of Art from 1920 until 1932. This first English-language publication on Liebermann looks beyond the factual details of his life and work to explore the virtuosity of his art And The personal attributes on which it oftentimes was based. Essays by German and American scholars provide creative new ways of understanding and interpreting Max Liebermann And The times in which he lived. Barbara C. Gilbert is senior curator of fine arts at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles. Other contributors include Marion Deshmukh, Francoise Forster-Hahn, Mason Klein, Chana Schultz, and Hermann Simon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book begins in the mid-eighteenth century with the first Jewish women to raise their voices in German. It ends two hundred years later, with another group of Jewish women looking back at a country from which they had been expelled and to which they would never want to return. Among the many prominent female intellectuals and literary figures Barbara Hahn discusses are Hannah Arendt, Gertrud Kantorowicz, Rosa Luxemburg, Else Lasker-Schuler, Margarete Susman, and Rahel Levin Varnhagen. In examining their writing, she reflects upon the question of how German culture was constructed - with its inherent patterns of exclusion."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how Germans came to embrace the Third Reich.Germany in early 1933 was a country ravaged by years of economic depression and increasingly polarized between the extremes of left and right. Over the spring of that year, Germany was transformed from a republic, albeit a seriously faltering one, into a one-party dictatorship. In Hitler's First Hundred Days, award-winning historian PeterFritzsche examines the pivotal moments during this fateful period in which the Nazis apparently won over the majority of Germans to join them in their project to construct the Third Reich. Fritzsche scrutinizes the events of theperiod - the elections and mass arrests, the bonfires and gunfire, the patriotic rallies and anti-Jewish boycotts - to understand both the terrifying power that the National Socialists came to exert over ordinary Germans and the powerful appeal of the new era that they promised.

This book is dedicated to the links between realism, modernism and the avant-garde in their international context from the late 19th century up to the present day.
Book Synopsis The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition by : Lucy Wasensteiner
Download or read book The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition written by Lucy Wasensteiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first study dedicated to Twentieth Century German Art, the 1938 London exhibition that was the largest international response to the cultural policies of National Socialist Germany and the infamous Munich exhibition Degenerate Art. Provenance research into the catalogued exhibits has enabled a full reconstruction of the show for the first time: its contents and form, its contributors and their motivations, and its impact both in Britain and internationally. Presenting the research via six case-study exhibits, the book sheds new light on the exhibition and reveals it as one of the largest émigré projects of the period, which drew contributions from scores of German émigré collectors, dealers, art critics, and from the ‘degenerate’ artists themselves. The book explores the show’s potency as an anti-Nazi statement, which prompted a direct reaction from Hitler himself.
Book Synopsis Friedrich Rosen by : Amir Theilhaber
Download or read book Friedrich Rosen written by Amir Theilhaber and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German lacuna in Edward Said’s 'Orientalism' has produced varied studies of German cultural and academic Orientalisms. So far the domains of German politics and scholarship have not been conflated to probe the central power/knowledge nexus of Said’s argument. Seeking to fill this gap, the diplomatic career and scholarly-literary productions of the centrally placed Friedrich Rosen serve as a focal point to investigate how politics influenced knowledge generated about the “Orient” and charts the roles knowledge played in political decision-making regarding extra-European regions. This is pursued through analyses of Germans in British imperialist contexts, cultures of lowly diplomatic encounters in Middle Eastern cities, Persian poetry in translation, prestigious Orientalist congresses in northern climes, leveraging knowledge in high-stakes diplomatic encounters, and the making of Germany’s Islam policy up to the Great War. Politics drew on bodies of knowledge and could promote or hinder scholarship. Yet, scholars never systemically followed empire in its tracks but sought their own paths to cognition. On their own terms or influenced by “Oriental” savants they aligned with politics or challenged claims to conquest and rule.
