Download or read book Storyworthy written by Matthew Dicks and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story — and why doing so matters. Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.

Book Synopsis Matthew's Christian-Jewish Community by : Anthony J. Saldarini
Download or read book Matthew's Christian-Jewish Community written by Anthony J. Saldarini and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-05-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most Jewish of gospels in its contents and yet the most anti-Jewish in its polemics, the Gospel of Matthew has been said to mark the emergence of Christianity from Judaism. Anthony J. Saldarini overturns this interpretation by showing us how Matthew, far from proclaiming the replacement of Israel by the Christian church, wrote from within Jewish tradition to a distinctly Jewish audience. Recent research reveals that among both Jews and Christians of the first century many groups believed in Jesus while remaining close to Judaism. Saldarini argues that the author of the Gospel of Matthew belonged to such a group, supporting his claim with an informed reading of Matthew's text and historical context. Matthew emerges as a Jewish teacher competing for the commitment of his people after the catastrophic loss of the Temple in 70 C.E., his polemics aimed not at all Jews but at those who oppose him. Saldarini shows that Matthew's teaching about Jesus fits into first-century Jewish thought, with its tradition of God-sent leaders and heavenly mediators. In Saldarini's account, Matthew's Christian-Jewish community is a Jewish group, albeit one that deviated from the larger Jewish community. Contributing to both New Testament and Judaic studies, this book advances our understanding of how religious groups are formed.

Book Synopsis Written/Unwritten by : Patricia A. Matthew
Download or read book Written/Unwritten written by Patricia A. Matthew and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academy may claim to seek and value diversity in its professoriate, but reports from faculty of color around the country make clear that departments and administrators discriminate in ways that range from unintentional to malignant. Stories abound of scholars--despite impressive records of publication, excellent teaching evaluations, and exemplary service to their universities--struggling on the tenure track. These stories, however, are rarely shared for public consumption. Written/Unwritten reveals that faculty of color often face two sets of rules when applying for reappointment, tenure, and promotion: those made explicit in handbooks and faculty orientations or determined by union contracts and those that operate beneath the surface. It is this second, unwritten set of rules that disproportionally affects faculty who are hired to "diversify" academic departments and then expected to meet ever-shifting requirements set by tenured colleagues and administrators. Patricia A. Matthew and her contributors reveal how these implicit processes undermine the quality of research and teaching in American colleges and universities. They also show what is possible when universities persist in their efforts to create a diverse and more equitable professorate. These narratives hold the academy accountable while providing a pragmatic view about how it might improve itself and how that improvement can extend to academic culture at large. The contributors and interviewees are Ariana E. Alexander, Marlon M. Bailey, Houston A. Baker Jr., Dionne Bensonsmith, Leslie Bow, Angie Chabram, Andreana Clay, Jane Chin Davidson, April L. Download or read book Search Party written by William Matthews and published by HMH. This book was released on 2005-04-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the prize-winning poet: “A stunning volume . . . A master of the understatement, Matthews is wryly philosophical and self-deprecating.” —Booklist When William Matthews died, the day after his fifty-fifth birthday, America lost one of its most important poets, one whose humor and wit were balanced by deep emotion, whose off-the-cuff inventiveness belied the acuity of his verse. Drawing from his eleven collections and including twenty-three previously unpublished poems, Search Party is the essential compilation of this beloved poet's work. Edited by his son, Sebastian Matthews, and William Matthews's friend and fellow poet Stanley Plumly (who also introduces the book), Search Party is an excellent introduction to the poet and his glistening riffs on twentieth-century topics from basketball to food to jazz.

Sample Book Insights: #1 A mother in South Florida went shopping with her son. She found a video game demo running, and her son begged her to let him play. She hesitated, but home furnishings was just a couple of aisles away. She gave her son a kiss, then hurried off to look for the lamps. #2 When a mother turns and finds her child suddenly lost from sight, she must not panic. She must retrace her steps and have the store announce her son’s name, so that he can find a clerk and report himself. #3 The Walshes, who were advocates for the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, were questioned about why they had not been able to solve the case of their son’s disappearance. They had been asking themselves the same question for nearly 25 years. #4 On this day, Matthews could see that something different had taken over the Walshes’ demeanor. They had heard one insensitive question too many. They were asking him to go back through everything the police had tried to figure out over the years, and prove who killed their son, once and for all.
