Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter, Ether, and Motion: The Factors and Relations of Physical Science As the work is a treatise on Physics, there is no special reason for going beyond it; but if this presenta tion of the subject is any approach to the truth, there is an important conclusion to be drawn from it. If the ether be the homogeneous and uniform medium it is believed with reason to be, then, in the absence of what we call matter, no physical change which we call a phenomenon could possibly arise in it for every such phenomenon is a product, and in the absence of one of the essential factors, viz., matter, it could not be. If matter itself be a form of motion of the ether, the ether must have existed prior to matter; also, if the atom be a form of energy, then must energy have existed before matter existed. Hence there must have been some other agency radically different from any physical energy we know, and independent of everything we know, which was capable of producing orderly physical phenomena, by acting upon the ether; for a homogene ous medium could not originate it. Some philosophers call this antecedent power The Unknowable others call it God. If energy as we know it implies antecedent energy as we do not know it, so, likewise, mind as we know it implies antecedent mind under totally different conditions from those in which we find it embodied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Philosophy of Matter: Showing the Identity of the Imponderables, and the Influence Which These Agents Exert Over Matter in Producing All Chemical Changes and All Motion After much research, I found where it was printed some sixteen years before; but not having been called for by the author, all but a few copies had been used up for packing, or sold for waste paper. I obtained the price per copy, and immediately sent an order for the balance. Occasionally I showed the work to my students under electrical instruction, who were inquiring for some text book as reference. They were enthusiastic Over its con tents, and were ever anxious to possess themselves Of a copy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Life, and Motion: With the Law of Their Relations to Matter WE began this work under the impulse of a tran sient conversation in the Rail Cars, and with no other design than to show the uncertainty of human testimony. This done, it suggested the error of Sir Isaac Newton in deducing a universal law from a centripetal force. In proving this error, we were forced to deny the acknowledged law of science, namely, that matter, or masses of matter, or atoms, or aggregates of atoms, were essentially inert. Orbital are axial motions developed in a diminishing series, and have therefore a common origin with the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry The quantity of matter of a body is, then, determined by its quantity of inertia and two bodies are said to have equal quantities of matter, when they have equal inertia. If the quantity of matter in one body is said to be twice the quantity of matter in another, the meaning is, that one has twice the inertia of the other or, that to give it the same motion will require twice the de gree of impelling force.' The mass of matter, or the ms of a body, is also a term of frequent use. This Word mass is to be understood as synonymous with quan tity: the mass of a body is, therefore, the quantity of matter in the body. Harris Lectures of this year. The fact that they were actual lec tures accounts for the form in which the text is given; and the further fact that the audi ence for whom they were prepared was com posed, for a large part, of people unfamiliar with both the facts and the methods of science must be accepted as the justification for the treatment of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter and Energy The behaviour of matter and energy represents one aspect only of human knowl edge, which is generally known by the name of physical science. It seems well to state at the outset that, throughout these pages, when the term science is employed it refers solely to this one branch. Physical science enjoys the distinction of being the most fundamental of the experimental sciences, and its laws are obeyed universally, so far as is known, not merely by inanimate things, but also by living organisms, in their minutest parts, as single individuals, and also as whole communities. It results from this that, however complicated a series Of phenomena may be and however many other sciences. We Shall find, as we proceed, that all changes in the appearance of objects are accompanied by motion. Physics is the science which treats of matter and its motion, and of vibrations in the ether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Six Lectures on the Various Forces of Matter, and Their Relations to Each Other Which was first, Matter or Force? If we think on this question we shall find that we are unable to conceive of matter without force, or force without matter. When God created the elements of which the earth is composed, He created certain wondrous forces, which are set free, and become evident when matter acts on matter. All these forces, with many differences, have much in common, and if one is set free it will immediately endeavour to free its com panions. Thus heat will enable us to eliminate light, electricity, magnetism, and chemical p action; chemical action will educe light, elec tricity, and heat; in this way we find that all the forces in nature tend to form mutually dependent systems, and as the motion of one star affects another, so force in action liberates and renders evident forces previously tranquil.
