Book excerpt: The pleasing warmth of fresh-baked maple cookies . . . the sweet, buttery flakiness of a raspberry jam pastry. In 1913 Ohio, the Amish Charm Bakery is beloved by locals and visiting Englischer alike. And its understanding community always provides help, healing—and new chances for love . . . Secrets devastated Maryann Harding’s marriage to an Englischer—and took away her untrustworthy husband. Now the young Amish widow has found contentment cooking up treats at the bakery, raising her little girl, and comforting her ailing mother. And when Andrew Wittmer asks her to marry him, Maryann is over the moon with happiness that she and the kind furniture maker will put down roots in her hometown . . . Until Andrew’s uncle becomes ill, and Andrew must permanently take over his store in a town hours away. Though she would go anywhere to be Andrew's fraa, Maryann can't abandon her mother—or the family that depends on her so much. And when she discovers Andrew harbors secrets of his own, Maryann's hard-won trust is shaken. Now, can she risk difficult choices and take a leap of faith into the loving, joyful future she longs for most?

It is the story of Mary and Matt Morgan and their family. But most of all, it is about the emotional impact of happiness and heartache, desire and deception and finally reality and renewal. Book Synopsis Living Off the Land by : Dale McMillan
Download or read book Living Off the Land written by Dale McMillan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McMillan blends real life experiences with imagination to weave a story of an independent backwoods "country boy" who meets a sophisticated "city girl". Follow their lives, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, as two families try to mesh. The book is typical of East Texas Piney Woods during the early 1940s through the war years. Rex Horn meets Mary Ann Anderson on a trying journey with his science and math teacher to Detroit Michigan. Their mission is to pick up a new school bus chassis to replace that of a worn out school bus. Mary Ann and her mother are on the train, and she and Rex meet. The two young people are immediately smitten and intrigued by the other's lifestyle. Mary Ann visits Rex at his rustic, pioneer type home, nestled in a remote section of an area known as The Big Thicket in the southern part of East Texas. Mary Ann is intrigued by Rex's parents who, unlike her parents, are uneducated but respected and leaders in the Foggy Bottom Community. Martha Horn, Rex's mother and Beth Horn, his sister, are both dynamic women who teach Mary Ann life skills necessary to live off the land. Rex's encounter with a panther, while trapping in the Neches river bottom, add spice to the story and peak Mary Ann's interest. Many of the tales related in this story are true, and are written as they happened; others are embellished. The reader will have fun trying to separate facts from fiction.

Book Synopsis The Fourteen Lives of Matt Perry by : Matthew Perry
Download or read book The Fourteen Lives of Matt Perry written by Matthew Perry and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who can say how words in this book will be received ? Will readers respond to a message about immigration and resilience ? I know my own reaction. I came to the conclusion that nobody would buy in. That was a switch because I had believed people would eat up my every word. As I wrote, a change came over me. I began to believe that my words would also change others. Even Warren Buffett, the modern King Midas. I began to see that my book was not just about emigration and resilience but also about repentance and redemption. I accepted the notion that this was my Pactolus, the river which had lifted the burden of greed and threat from Midas, whose food and drink---and daughter---turned into gold at his touch. Suddenly, Midas was free to live like a person who could touch his food, drink and family members without bad results. He was freed from his addiction to wealth. ---------------------------- My 77-year-span unfolded before my eyes. I recorded all traumas in detail---a million words, hundreds of pages. Slowly, I began to understand that I was having a conversion experience. -------------------------- I went from admiration and love of pennies, nickels, dimes, riches, wealth---an addicted state of mind---to the realization that I had a condition which I call Buffett mania. As Buffett's biographer Schroeder wrote this year, Buffett did not control money. Rather, money controlled Warren Buffett. In Omaha, Buffett stole his sister's bicycle--because he wanted a trade-in as he bought a bicycle for himself. He shop-lifted golf balls at Sears in Washington so he could sell balls himself. During my careers as chemical engineer and stock-market analyst, I observed Buffett mania in my engineering and business associates but overlooked my addiction. I still have traces of this mental illness. Now I have decided to be a man---to confront Warren Buffett with my book. Buffett's biographer describes his mania in a new biography, The Snowball. American preoccupation with economics played a part in Warren Buffett's so-called success and so-called wealth. ----------------------------- There is an antidote to the poison of addiction to greed---and that is this book, My Fourteen Lives. My resilience, which saved my life 13 times, is nothing less than a gift from God, who will also save Warren Buffett from his greed. It's not just about my life and that of Warren Buffett because 500,000 other lives hang in the balance. Addiction to greed has targeted many victims for a hellish life and death. Time for repentance and redemption ! Time to give away your money, Mr. Buffett. In your own lifetime. Do it yourself. As Carnegie did. As Rockefeller did. As Morgan did. Time for everybody on "Wall Street" to refuse the end-of-year bonus. Buy books instead. Buy The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the business of life. $35 for 960 pages ! Buy My Fourteen Lives: the many lives of Matthew Valentin Perry Give them as presents. Read them yourself. ( You never know...)

Book Synopsis Spirit of the White Eagle by : Jim Taylor
Download or read book Spirit of the White Eagle written by Jim Taylor and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the American Wild West, the only law is the gun, and justice hinges on the speed and skill of man wielding it. Orphaned in the state of Virginia and fleeing conscription into the Confederate Army, Matt Clayton makes his way to Mexico, then braves Comanche territory to head north. It’s there Clayton meets the beautiful Comanche princess Desert Flower, whose spirit will watch over him as he travels the West, building a reputation as a fast gunslinger and an honest man. When Becky Morrison’s husband and father are gunned down by the greedy Vince McKenna and his gang, Clayton finds more than he ever expected on the Circle K Ranch: love, a home, a future. But for a man like Matt Clayton, there is no peace until justice has been done. McKenna and his allies must pay for their crimes. But can one man bring down the quickest guns of the West? Under the guidance of the White Eagle, Matt Clayton might just have a chance. Spirit of the White Eagle is a classic Western, with nods to legends like Kit Carson, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday. Matt Clayton struggles with good and evil, with loss and hope, with friendship and disappointment, trying to find his place in a rapidly changing world, a world not so different from our own.
