Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many other denominations, seventeenth-century Quakers were keen to ensure that members married within their own religious community. In order to properly understand the ramification of such a policy, this book explores the early Quaker marriage approbation process and discipline as demonstrated through the works and marriage of the movement’s leaders, George Fox and Margaret Fell. The book begins with an introduction that briefly summarises the historical context of the early Quaker movement, the ministry of Fox and Fell, and importance they laid upon the marriage approbation discipline. The remainder of the book is divided into three broad chapters. Chapter one examines the practical aspects of the early Quaker marriage approbation discipline, including a summary of seventeenth-century courtship and marriage practice, and an analysis of early Quaker Meeting Minutes. Chapter two then looks at the theological foundations of the marriage approbation process, and the Quaker emphasis on ’Good Order’ and their desire to return to the primitive Christianity of the apostolic church. Chapter three examines the marriage between Fox and Fell, which they presented as a testimony of the union of Christ and his Church. Their married life is analysed through their correspondence to discover whether or not the marriage did indeed exemplify the spiritual gravity originally bestowed upon it by Fox, Fell and some in the Quaker community. Through this close investigation of Quaker marriage approbation, the book offers fascinating insights into early modern English society, attitudes to gender and the early Quakers’ self-perception of themselves as the one and only True Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a distinctive approach to the same-sex-union debate by framing the issue as a matter of marriage. Darrin Snyder Belousek demonstrates that the interpretation of Scripture affects whether the church should revise its doctrine of marriage for the sake of sanctioning same-sex union. Engaging charitably yet critically with opposing viewpoints, he delves deeply into what marriage is, what it is for, and what it means as presented in the biblical narrative and the theological tradition, articulating a biblical-traditional theology of marriage for the contemporary church. Afterword by Wesley Hill.

Book excerpt: If you like "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas, or "The Meaning of Marriage" by Timothy keller, then you'll be impacted by this book. What's the purpose of marriage? Can you answer that question confidently and eloquently? Most importantly, do you know what the biblical answer to that question is? Most Christians enter into dating relationships and marriages naively, having no real understanding of why God created marriage in the first place. Why did God create attraction between male and female? Procreation is certainly part of the equation and so is the value of partnership, but neither of those two things satisfy the question of the true purpose of marriage. Because the purpose of intimacy has been misunderstood, its power has been misused. The joining together of man and woman in holy matrimony is an institution with much more sanctity and power that we realize. Marriage has lost its weightiness in our culture, and unfortunately, even in our churches. If marriage in Christianity is ever to become what it was designed to be, a complete understanding of its purpose must be recovered. Through "CHRIST AND THE CHURCH: THE UNTOLD TRUTH ABOUT MARRIAGE," intended for singles and couples of all ages and stages of life, David Grams invites you to join him in the discovery of the true, biblical purpose and power of marriage, promising that such a discovery will transform your heart and revolutionize your relationships. This book is comprised primarily of a series of lies about relationships that have poisoned Christian families all over the world. Countless marriages are suffering the ramifications of fallacious relational ideologies we've learned in church, in school, in counseling sessions -- ideologies we've foolishly accepted as true, while they are in no way supported by the teachings of God's Word. In this book, you'll learn how love, commitment, sex, and attraction have all been distorted by religious and cultural traditions, and how a radical reform of our beliefs about relationships needs to happen before our families will be absolutely healed. In this book, singles and engaged couples will learn to lay a necessary foundation for their future marriage, married couples will learn how to see themselves healed of any form dysfunction and strengthen their relationship through the love of God, and separated couples will learn how to mend wounds and restore love where it seems hopeless. Reviews/Testimonials :"This Christ and the Church book is huge to me. I'm only at Lie #3 and I am seeing my understanding of Father/Son [my relationship with God] take on a new level of understanding. All my questions about both Father/Son and Husband/Wife are being answered complete and full." - Ian, USA ."When you see the wisdom in this book and then remember that it was first written by a young man who wasn't married, it is undeniable that the Holy Spirit truly inspired it. No unmarried/inexperienced person could write the wisdom that's in this book, unless God truly spoke to him." - Marcy, USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is that God intends that sexual intercourse should be at least implicitly a renewal of the marriage covenant. From this it follows that the marriage covenant provides the criterion to evaluate the morality of every sexual act. Thus the title, Sex and the Marriage Covenant, is an appropriate description of the bookಙs contents. Marriage comes into being by a couple unreservedly entering God's covenant of marriage; contraceptive intercourse contradicts the very essence of the marriage covenant. From these considerations, Kippley developed the covenant theology of sexuality described in this book.

These profound reflections on the cross from David Mathis, author of The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, will help you to meditate on and marvel at Jesus’ life, sacrificial death, and spectacular resurrection-enabling you to treasure anew who Jesus is and what he has done. Many of us are so familiar with the Easter story that it becomes easy to miss subtle details and difficult to really enjoy its meaning. This book will help you to pause and marvel at Jesus, whose now-glorified wounds are a sign of his unfailing love and the decisive victory that he has won: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) This book can be used as a devotional. The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

The world uses different assaults and tactics to distract us, tempting us to walk away, in order to destroy our marriages. But there is hope: The constant forgiveness, grace, and intervention of God can preserve and protect us from not only the world but also ourselves. D. A. and Elicia Horton explore the tension of two people becoming one and how spouses often fight over which “one of us” they become. They unpack topics such as Seasons of suffering Communication Sexual and physical intimacy The spiritual life of the home Money This book approaches the traditional topics of a marriage book with the brutal and life-giving honesty of two millennials who have fought together for their marriage. All topics are addressed through the vulnerable lens of the authors’ own struggles and mistakes. This is a no-holds-barred, real-world . . . marriage book.

Book excerpt: century has ushered in some extreme, strange, and disturbing beliefs about marriage. We're living in a day and time where the definition and purpose of marriage is being challenged, and in some areas of our country changed to meet the desires of our society. Laws have been passed in some states that sanction same sex marriage, men marrying men, and women marrying women. Men and women marrying animals may be just around the corner, and if we're not careful, we may see laws on the books that sanction and encourage this as well, particularly if the animal will be entitled to the medical or insurance benefits of its spouse. You may say this will never happen. Well, we're also living in a time where public display of the Ten Commandments is being challenged. It seems our society doesn't want to be faced with or reminded of what God has said and established for us to have an orderly society. It's almost as though what we want is for every man to be able to do what he feels is right in his own heart. We've been there before. Marriage is under attack from the outside as well as the inside. Husbands and wives are trying to manage marriage, while society is trying to re-define and re-shape marriage at the same time. We've been blinded by the enemy, unable to see the spiritual warfare launched on the marriage which is wounding families, businesses, and the church, resulting in serious casualties. However, all is not lost if we look to God's Word, embrace His principles, and apply them to our marriage and daily living. He has already said a number of things pertaining to both. Holy Matrimonywill give you some things to think about, Now that You Are MarriedIt addresses many of the current issues facing married couples today, such as: Who's Idea was marriage? Listening to one another Sex and Intimacy When you've been married before The down side of marriage It also provides understanding "Temperament"

Book excerpt: Marriage is all about sharing: sharing space, sharing joys and sorrows, sharing hopes and dreams. Yet we often hold back a part of ourselves because we fear that being wholly transparent--about our past, our desires, our failures, our faults--will bring judgment, rejection, or even just unwanted friction to our relationship. We are afraid to be fully known. As a result, we never experience being fully loved. Fierce Marriage authors Ryan and Selena Frederick think your marriage deserves better. In this new, paradigm-shifting book, they show you how to develop a see-through marriage, one that is marked by full transparency and confident vulnerability. Through personal stories, testimonies from other couples, and biblical truth, they make the case that living authentically in front of each other is the only way to experience love the way we were designed to. If you desire an honest, no-holding-back marriage where you are fully known, fully accepted, and fully loved, you need this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "People say our marriage is impossible." Laurie and Matt Krieg are in a mixed-orientation marriage: a marriage in which at least one partner's primary attraction isn't toward the gender of their spouse. In the Kriegs' case, Laurie is primarily attracted to women—and so is Matt. Some find the idea of mixed-orientation marriage bewildering or even offensive. But as the Kriegs have learned, nothing is impossible with God—and that's as true of their marriage as anyone else's. In An Impossible Marriage, the Kriegs tell their story: how they met and got married, the challenges and breakthroughs of their journey, and what they've learned about marriage along the way. Christianity teaches us that marriage is a picture of Jesus’ love for the church—and that's just as true in a mixed-orientation marriage as in a straight one. With vulnerability and wisdom, this book lays out an engaging picture of marriage in all its pain and beauty. It's a picture that points us, over and over again, to the love and grace of Jesus—as marriage was always meant to do.
